Perched on 5 acres with stunning views of the Valley
About Derek Howard
Life in Lost River for me began as a weekend retreat from my environmental law practice in Washington, DC. I loved life in Lost River so much that I made it my full-time home for over five years as a telecommuter. In Lost River, I enjoy hiking, snow skiing, training for triathlons (running and biking world-class rural roads, open-water swimming at Trout Pond), tossing bags in the Lost River Cornhole League, painting and silk screening (check out my T-shirts for sale at the Lost River Artisans Coop!), and nesting on the homefront (reading, writing and cooking). With some exciting career and life changes, Lost River has become a part-time retreat again. I'm happy to begin this new chapter of sharing my place when I'm away with others looking for the perfect place to relax and recreate!
Derek Howard purchased this House in 2007

The stay I dreamed..
I listened silent which increased my inner happiness . This is my first time but definitely not my last one ..
Good, not great
The Good: The location is wonderful and secluded with all be magic of the West Virginia mountains. The porch was lovely and we pretty much lived on the hammock listening to nature and reading. Very relaxing
The Bad: Disappointed that there was no drinking water as stated in the description. Also the grill was gross and seemed like it hadn’t been used or cleaned in years. We brought stuff to grill so that was a bummer.
The Ugly: It was dirty. The sheets smelled like cologne, the stove top and back of the stove were splattered in grease. Just a general level of grime all over which, given the cleaning fee and other fees is disappointing. I can overlook a lot of things, but cleanliness cant be overlooked. Especially since it’s an easy fix.
With some minor improvements and a deep clean, this place would be 5
Quiet, starry stay
Derek's house was just what we needed: A quiet place atop the mountain, with a great view of the stars.
Lovely location, great views but a few issues
We absolutely loved the location of this house and enjoyed a most relaxing, no agenda type of vacation. Hours were spent sitting on the screened in porch which looked out on nothing but a surround of trees with beautiful mountains beyond. We would have given it 5 stars except for the following concerns:
-We were informed that the tap water is not for drinking but that bottled drinking water is provided so we did not bother to bring our own. However, both of the 5 gallon containers were empty upon our arrival so we had to contact the owner and property manager trying to find out how to handle the situation. The property manager was a bit defensive, putting the responsibility on the owner for not having it there for us. She told us where we could go to buy water - not something we felt like getting back in the car to do after arriving early evening. I made contact with the owner, he apologized, said he was out of town and unable to assist but that he would contact the property manager for some assistance. He thoughtfully offered to pay us back for the water that we would have to buy but we declined and just dealt with it ourselves. However, we never heard anything more from either one regarding having any water delivered; we just had to buy lots of bottled water from the grocery store. It didn't ruin the vacation, but it was an unexpected nuisance. We recommend you confirm that drinking water is available.
- The gas grill is in poor repair and broken; though I had planned on grilling for one of our meals, it did not look safe to use so we couldn't grill as planned.
- There were some cleaning issues - very dirty ceiling fans, a lot of debris on the deck and picnic table which we needed to clean off, some cobwebs inside. Not overwhelming but just not what you expect when a cleaning fee is part of your rental cost.
To end on a positive note, my husband forgot some clothing in a drawer and when I contacted both the owner and property manager, this was taken care of in a very timely manner and the clothing arrived in about 3 days.
So, we definitely would recommend Dereks house if you want a very quiet and peaceful time with a beautiful view of the mountains. The issues above would not prevent us from returning.
Perfect weekend getaway
The cabin and view are even better than than they looked in the pictures.
The star of this property is the incredible view of the mountains that you just can't stop looking at. It is so wonderful to eat meals on the deck or watch the sunrise. I would highly recommend this property for a 2 person stay or perhaps parents with children. It is more challenging for 2 couples. The master bedroom and bath is wonderful, the second bedroom with bunk bed and tiny bathroom more of a challenge, especially for 50+ year old people. Also there is only comfy chairs/seating for 2 or 3 people with some chair rearranging. Drinking water comes from a cistern and you are cautioned not to drink it but use bottled water. There were only empty water bottles there for our visit, fortunately we brought several gallons ourselves. Unfortunately two of our party accidentally consumed water through ice cubes and early morning tea, and then suffered a mild version of a Mexican visit as a result. Overall its a nice property with a great view to wake up to if you are a party of 2.
