Photos and Description of this 2 bedroom holiday home in Lost River - Lost River Mountaintop Retreat

Perched on 5 acres with stunning views of the Valley

NEW for Spring & Summer 2016: Fiber Optic Internet & Cable TV, and other interior/exterior upgrades!

If you're looking for uninterrupted views and relaxation on a mountaintop, this is the spot for you!

Lost River, West Virginia is a special place. It is situated between the George Washington National Forest, the Lost River State Park, and miles upon miles of pastoral country roads and farmsteads. The Lost River area attracts visitors who love the outdoors and enjoy hiking, biking, horseback riding, canoeing, fishing, skiing (Massanutten, Canaan Valley, Bryce Resort, and Snowshoe), and geo-catching. It's also a popular destination for antiquing and taking in Appalachian culture through the local arts and crafts scene (Lost River Artisans Cooperative and Museum). This property is central to it all, and the perfect weekend retreat from Washington, DC (2 hours), Baltimore, MD (3 hours), Richmond, VA (3 1/2 hours) or Philadelphia (5 hours)!

For the foodies: The owner loves to bake and cook, so the kitchen is well-stocked with cookware, spices, and basic ingredients (flour, sugar, baking powder, etc.). You can even pick some herbs from the herb garden. Spend the night in with friends or family enjoying dinner by the fireplace, or outside grilling and dining in the screened porch to nature's chorus of crickets and other creatures that inhabit the area. Or, spend the night out enjoying a gourmet meal at the Guest House at Lost River or Lost River Brewery. The Lost River Grill is also a popular spot for drinks and live entertainment. Lunch at the General Store is highly recommended (the BBQ pork sandwich is a favorite!).

For the adventurous, the Lost River area has a lot to offer! If you're a triathlete, take advantage of the world-class rural roads for running and biking, and Trout Pond for open-water swims. Lost River is also a hiker's paradise--Big Schloss (George Washington National Forest) and Cranny Crow (Lost River State Park) are two popular favorites. Lost River is also a great launching site for nearby canoe and tube float trips. The old timber roads on the mountain (immediately accessible from the property) make for some spectacular mountain biking and snowshoeing (2 pairs of snowshoes are available for complimentary use). Winter in Lost River is spectacular for both nesters and adventurers! Hit the slopes of Bryce, Massanutten, Canaan Valley and Snowshoe (a little more distant, but close enough to return home in time for a crockpot dinner).

For the sightseers and shoppers, no visit to Lost River is complete without a visit to the Lost Rivers Artisans Cooperative and Museum (the owner's hand-screened t-shirts are among the many locally crafted items for sale).

For the Yogis, grab your mat because Lost River is a perfect place for practice, and the Yoga Barn (offering regular morning classes throughout the Spring, Summer & Fall) is right down the mountain!

For the homebodies, this property is also for you. Grab a beer and chill in the hammock with a book. Settle on the sofa with your favorite shows on Netflix or Hulu (there's Apple TV), or choose a DVD from the library. Lounge on the deck, taking in the gorgeous views, birds and other wildlife (deer, black bear, wild turkeys, squirrels, fox...) . Grab the cribbage board or cornhole boards. Or do absolutely nothing! So many options...

About Derek Howard

Life in Lost River for me began as a weekend retreat from my environmental law practice in Washington, DC. I loved life in Lost River so much that I made it my full-time home for over five years as a telecommuter. In Lost River, I enjoy hiking, snow skiing, training for triathlons (running and biking world-class rural roads, open-water swimming at Trout Pond), tossing bags in the Lost River Cornhole League, painting and silk screening (check out my T-shirts for sale at the Lost River Artisans Coop!), and nesting on the homefront (reading, writing and cooking). With some exciting career and life changes, Lost River has become a part-time retreat again. I'm happy to begin this new chapter of sharing my place when I'm away with others looking for the perfect place to relax and recreate!

Guestbook comments from the owner

Everything is going great. We just got back from a hike at Lost River State Park and are eating lunch out on the porch. It's been great that the weather has been much nicer than predicted. The view from up here is fantastic. We are sad we have to leave so soon.

Great house with beautiful views!

  • 5 of 5

We had a really terrific weekend at this great little house on top of a mountain in Lost River. The house is really charming, with a terrific screened in porch and deck - and you wake up to amazing sunrises looking out across the valley.

Derek, the owner, is super nice and really responsive and helpful. It's an all around great house in a great location - just up the mountain from the Guest House - and we will definitely go back!

A beautiful, peaceful escape in the mountains

  • 5 of 5

We recently spend a week at this sweet home in the mountains. From the beginning to the end our experience was nothing but wonderful. This is a place to go to retreat, escape, and rest in a setting that is just art! The house itself is situated high up a long, bumpy road. It is a charming, well taken care of home that makes you feel relaxed the moment you set foot inside. The views from the back deck will make you want to stay there all day, except at the end of the day when you will want to walk the road to see the amazing sunsets that looked different each eve. Practically, everything you would need is there and the owner was very responsive and helpful. Verizon phones do not work up on the mountain (FYI). Also, as stated in other reviews, bring your groceries with you so you don't have to venture out too far looking for things. There really isn't anything around. The hiking at Lost River state park was great. Honestly this is one of the best places we have every stayed at for the retreat type week we were looking for. We will definitely make this a yearly occurrence.

Great stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent three nights here in June and enjoyed it very much. The view was great, and it was the peaceful retreat we were hoping for. All pictures of the house are very accurate--the furniture was comfortable and up to date, while the house was extremely well-designed and comfortable. As other reviews mentioned, the kitchen is well-stocked and convenient. Great wi-fi. Both Derek and the property manager Jennifer checked in with us during our stay to make sure we had everything we needed. It was more remote than we expected--it took us a good 15-20 minutes to get up the mountain to the property (probably at least 20 minutes to the nearest convenience store). Overall, we were happy with the stay.

Great Updates!

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed at this property several times over the years, and I highly recommend it as a weekend escape. It was a beautiful spring weekend. The house is perfectly situated to take advantage of the gorgeous mountain views, including a balcony off the master bedroom. The owner has done a fantastic job of retaining the bohemian, cheerful and comfey spirit of the place but it also looked more fresh and updated with some new furnishings, deck staining, and painting. I also like his art. Derek is always a pleasure to deal with. We really appreciated the homemade cookies upon arrival! Thanks again for a nice weekend!

Great getaway in the mountains

  • 4 of 5

Derek's house is great. Charming and comfortable, and while remote, not isolated. Make sure you stock up on whatever supplies you might want (food stuffs in particular) as there are no real grocery stores for many many miles. However, if you are stocked up, you likely never need to leave the house. Sitting on the balcony or relaxing in the house, both provide a sense of serenity that you just can't get in a metropolitan area. Oh, and bunnies, especially at dusk and dawn!

The only downside, and this was likely due to the warm winter, was that there were an abundance of flies and stink bugs in the house (we didn't notice the fly swatters next to the refrigerator till the last morning). We were all able to just write them off to "getting back to nature" though.
