About the property

A boutique villa of only three apartments in a secluded tropical garden

At Casa Gatos we offer an “at home” environment in an intimate setting where our guests can relax after their day’s activities. Our spacious apartments, comfortably furnished and accented with an eclectic selection of art and antiques, have all the amenities required for a fulfilling vacation, while our amiable and unobtrusive hospitality make for a pleasing, laid back experience. Each apartment has its own individual and distinctive style.

Casa Gatos is in the quaint residential neighborhood between Half Moon Bay and Yalku Lagoon, where neighbors greet each other while walking their dogs or wave to passing tourists out for their morning jog. A small natural park across the gravel drive from our gated entrance provides a buffer from the hustle and bustle of the beaches and the traffic of the main beach road. We are conveniently located a few hundred meters from the entrance to the lagoon and beach, with Que Onda restaurant next door and several of the other restaurants and convenience stores within an easy stroll or bike ride. More restaurants and stores are clustered between the entrance to Akumal and Akumal Bay a mile down the beach road.

The upper floor apartments have balconies shaded by thatch palapas, and all apartments have access to the roof garden for sunning or relaxing in the breeze coming from the sea. The central courtyard is a great place to enjoy morning coffee or afternoon cocktails accompanied by the music of the trickling fountain waters and surrounded by colorful tropical flowers.The air conditioned fitness room is available to our guests should the mood for exercise overtake them.

Accommodations consist of our #100 junior one bedroom apartment and the three bedroom Townhouse, which is flexibly designed to be divided into two apartments of one two or three bedrooms.

SUITE 100

is a one bedroom garden apartment with balcony, that comfortably accommodates two to three guests, having a queen bed, a double futon and love seats in the bedroom and a single daybed in the front room. The rooms are surprisingly spacious. Animal themed and African art and artifacts decorate brightly painted walls, while the numerous windows admit sunlight and breezes. The kitchen is fully equipped, and has a breakfast counter and dining nook.The balcony catches the sea breeze and has a beautiful view of the garden and fountain. Both rooms are air conditioned and have ceiling fans. There is satellite HDTV in the lounge area and WiFI throughout.

There is nothing more spectacular than sitting on the roof terrace as the sun sets over North Akumal, rises over the open sea, or as the night sky overhead fills with countless stars, galaxies and nebulae. Of course, there's also just sunning or reading in the shade, while enjoying the expansive view in every direction over miles of jungle, sea and shoreline.

About Dan Freeman or David Zucker

Dan Freeman had a varied career in the food service industry with his own catering company for ten years then as Director of Sales and Marketing for the Philadelphia Zoo and New Jersey Aquarium, and then as Creative Director, designing affairs for a New Jersey catering company. David Zucker ran a paper products manufacturing company. In our leisure life we were divers and became hooked on cave diving, which brought us back to Akumal year after year. It was always our intention to move to this paradise when we retired. We drove down with three cats (for whom the house is named), and acquired a rescue dog and outside cat while living here. We congratulate ourselves on our decision every day as we walk the dog and watch the waves break along along the iron shore.

Why Dan Freeman or David Zucker chose Quintana Roo

Like so many others who chose to live in or migrate periodically to Akumal, we came, we saw, and we were conquered by the its natural beauty and welcoming atmosphere .

When we decided to buy a house in Mexico, we wanted to locate to the safest and most secure region of the country, where crime rates are lower than in all U.S. cities and most towns.

The proximity of the reef and Yalku Lagoon and the numberless cenotes and underground caverns surrounding Akumal were definite draws. However, the primary draw was this great community, friendly and laid back, filled with interesting people from all over the U.S., Mexico and Canada.

What makes this apartment unique

There's nothing like breakfast on the plaza in the mornings after a short walk along the sea or lagoon with Chaparra, our rescue dog, greeting the runners, other dog walkers and the workers coming from the Pueblo across the highway. In the afternoons we can just walk around the corner to go snorkeling in Yalku then relax in the serene beauty of our private garden. In the evenings there are our nearby restaurants where we can dine with friends at a reasonable price.

The beauty of our gated garden can be enjoyed from the central terrace or from the upper level balconies. Full time maid service, beach chairs and beach towels are provided. There are safes in each unit. Babysitting service and food preparation can be arranged. Massages can be had by appointment. We have arranged discounted entry to Yalku Lagoon for our guests .

Very Welcoming

We spent a week at Casa Gatos. Dave and Dan were very welcoming. The condo is very private and secluded. The grounds as well as the condo were very clean and well tended. You get a homey feeling because of the comfortable setting but also because of the contact with all of the neighbors. Highly recommended. The condo is next to Yal Ku. Unless you enjoy walking you should rent a car because it is a long walk to the main area of town.
