Rent at your own risk!

  • 2 of 5

We have rented many times from VRBO over the past decade. This was the most frustrating and disappointing rental, by far.

The condo has an excellent view and location, it is spacious, and it has a nice layout. Hence the two stars. Otherwise, it gets no additional stars for the following reasons.

First, over our nine day stay the heat never worked. It was in the 40s to 50s in SF; in the unit it was in the 50s and 60s. We exchanged many emails and calls with the manager. The second day he suggested we walk to a store and buy some wood to use in the fireplace to try and warm the living room (this is the only fireplace that works of the 3 that are shown in the photos). After 4 days he gave us several portable heaters that were only slightly effective. However, the rest of our family left the next day so the majority of our time was with room temperatures in the 50s and 60s.

On our 4th day, we returned from an excursion late afternoon and there was not only no heat but no hot water (we wanted to take showers). We called the manager immediately; he came the next day and said a repairman had turned it off while we were away (I had actually asked him if that was a possibility, but he said no). So, no heat for the entire nine days and no hot water for one full day.

In our various exchanges with the manager, we learned that they had been having problems with the heat and the hot water system for quite some time, which makes it very disingenuous that they still charge the full rate for rentals, and that they don’t warn renters of these potential problems.

There were other minor items (e.g. coffee maker must have been sitting for weeks without cleaning the grinds, which were moldy- we didn’t use it; the parking space we rented was occupied one day we returned; even when the hot water was working it was highly variable; light bulbs out in multiple spots).

In summary, this rental is absolutely not worth the risk. We never felt we got straight answers, let alone solutions, from the manager.

Owner's Response: The heating issue that the guest mentioned was completely new to us and happened over the holiday when literally every qualified hydronic company had a company holiday. We provided the guests with wood and space heaters despite getting an earful to the effect of "don't even try to give us space heaters" and worked literally every day to diagnose and cure the problem (burned out valve). Ultimately, we had to overnight a valve from the east coast and installed it ASAP. They were without normal heat, this is true, but frankly, i'm not sure i could have done much else. It is completely untrue that these are recurring problems. this one was completely new. We have had issues with water heat in the past (it always comes up but sometimes takes a few minutes for the on demand to kick in) but in this case, our plumber merely forgot to turn the on demand water back on after working on the boiler and it took me a day to figure that out! Adding agony to misery all over again!

Great for family with kids

The apartment is pretty well equipped and has plenty of space for everyone in our family. Very close to many places, coit tower, china town, fisherman's wharf and so on.

Great location on telegraph hill, steps away from North Beach, Little Italy

Awesome views of the skyline, city, and bay! Apartment is roomy and full of natural light. Roof deck is wonderful! Bedrooms and bathrooms are all well appointed with high end fixtures. Tommy was very responsive to any issues. We actually had a problem with the freezer and he made every effort to get it fixed over Thanksgiving weekend. Would definitely stay here again!

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

We had a lovely time in this apartment. I honestly don't think there could be a better location in San Francisco! This is my 11th trip to this city and my first time in this area. I loved it! We had breakfast every day in the cafe down the street and dinner in the same area too. It wasn't too far to walk to both fisherman wharf and through Chinatown to downtown - it seems to be kind of in the middle. We were with elderly relatives and small children - all of who managed the apartment fine. And actually as one bedroom is on the main level and the other two bedrooms are on the lower level, it meant some degree of privacy also. The owner answered on first ring when we needed to contact him. Overall absolutely no complaints! The view is incredible! Five stars all round from us. It's worth the price for the view, the space, the deck and the location.
