About Meg and Bob Connor

We have lived full time on Orcas Island since 1975, raising three sons, who are now married with children who love to visit their grand-parents. We have been happily married for 52 years!

We moved up here with a down payment and no jobs and over the years have done many things. We have worked, farmed, been in construction, operated heavy equipment, coached Little League for all three sons, participated in countless community activities, volunteered at the school, run two successful gift and clothing shops, designed and built several buildings including the amazing Gnome House, and remodeled our other vacation rental waterfront home, Maggie's Manor, using the outstanding design drawings of our eldest son, now an Architect.

We are involved in cutting edge restoration of marine habitat and just completed a 9 weir salmon ladder and planted over 1500 plants and trees over our estuarine and riparian areas. If you have a Facebook page, visit the Deer Harbor Stewardship Project page to see some of what we have been doing. We hope you will 'Like' it.

We have extensive backgrounds in skiing, sailing, cycling and mountaineering. We enjoy adventures and vacations with our children and grand-children.

Meg and Bob Connor purchased this chalet in 1986

Why Meg and Bob Connor chose Deer Harbor

We designed and built the Gnome House as a tribute to our Scandinavian heritage, and as a tribute to the place we first met in Kitzbuhel, Austria. It began as a family guesthouse and now for the past 25 years has been an extremely popular vacation rental, perfect for family vacations, romantic getaways, honeymoons, and special occasions galore.

It is located on our 140 acre estate, near our home, and also near our other wonderful vacation rental 4 bedroom waterfront home, called Maggie's Manor. We wanted to share our Orcas Island lifestyles with visitors from all over the world. We have on-going environmental restoration activities on our 3 streams, several ponds, magnificent 20 acre estuary, and 20 acre wildfowl marsh, as well as beautiful, productive farm and forest land. It is considered the most significant environmentally diverse San Juan Islands' property by local, state and federal environmental agencies.

The beauty and tranquility of Nature inspires everyone who visits.

Orcas Island is the most popular place in Washington to get married, and is the dream vacation spot for people all over the world, and we get to live here! And when visitors leave and we say 'goodbye', we always because we are happy to see them go, but rather because we are so happy that we don't have to leave this paradise!

What makes this chalet unique

In addition to the extraordinary beauty and serenity of Nature,so inspiring to us all, the incredible good weather in Deer Harbor is one of the main reasons for living here. Deer Harbor on beautiful Orcas Island is located in the 'Rain Shadow' area of the Great Pacific Northwest enjoying only 23 inches of rain and over 260 sunny days annually. This means that we can enjoy the great outdoors all year long, hiking, biking, sailing, fishing, etc.

There have been documented over 80 species of birds frequenting the extremely vibrant freshwater marsh. There are a variety of environmental programs in progress. We work with scientists, students, and Native Americans on our restoration efforts. Our property is the site of the first white European settler on Orcas Island, Louis Cayou, who married into the Samish Nation in the mid-1800s. We are working with the Samish descendants of Cayou in our restoration efforts, and hope to have their annual Canoe Journey with about 60 canoes stop here in the future.

Should your dates not be available in this chalet, please see our other wonderful vacation rental homes: " Grandma and Grandpa’s Getaway for 2 adults + one child, Maggie’s Manor for up to 8 people, and in the off seasons, Maggie’s Getaway for up to 4 guests.

Guestbook comments from the owner

What a spectacular weekend we just had! This has been one of the greatest times my girlfriend, Meesa, our dog, Ponca and I have had in a long time. When we first saw this place on your website, we knew we had to visit, but it was so much more charming and enchanting than we imagined it could be. I'm blown away by all the great details and woodwork of this home, it's every bit THE DREAM GETAWAY SPOT we've been searching for, we will definitely be back many more times and we can't wait to share our memories with all our friends! The hot tub was a grreat added bonus to gaze at the star-filled sky...we saw the longest shooting star we'd ever seen our first night here out there. You have a wonderful piece of property and we look forward to re-visiting very soon. P.S. Thank you so much fo allowing our dog. She had a VERY good time.

Absolutely Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

The Gnome House was like something out of a storybook, only better. Gorgeous woodwork everywhere, so cozy and exquisite. The hot tub under the stars is a wonderful way to end the day, which we spent exploring the island, and the Connors' property. The kitchen and BBQ were just what we needed, well equipped, and the wonderful bay window alcove dining area was great.

We will definitely be back to the Gnome House!

Magical Unique Chalet with Incredible Architecture and Woodworking!

  • 5 of 5

This place was amazing-tucked away and private, fully stocked with everything we needed to just relax, cook at the house and get away from the city! Meg was great at giving us tips on where to go on the island and her dogs are the sweetest! The house has so much character inside and out! The hot tub was a great way to relax! Eastsound had plenty to offer in the way of places to shop for food and only 15 minutes away. We will definitely be back!

We were so excited to stay here, and couldn't have been more disappointed. The grounds are littered with broken down farm equipment, debris, and trash. The house is totally unkempt. It is full of cob webs (inside the house)! There is pet hair everywhere, there is a giant wasp nest on the rafters (inside the house)!, the window was broken, the hot tub is treated with clorox bleach, there was a GIANT spider lurking in the bathroom towels, The futon is not sleepable, and the fruit flies were so thick we were under siege. This house has not been properly cleaned or maintained in a long long time. The photos and their ad are completely misleading, and the rate they are charging for this dump is outrageous. We couldn't stand it any longer and left a day early. Even if this house were in perfect condition you are still a half an hour away from anything fun to do. Do yourself a favor and stay in Eastsound or near Moran state park.

Owner's Response: Well, this review was a surprise. This guest did not say anything negative about anything during her stay, and we saw each other several times. As a host, it is impossible to help a guest with any issue, if they do not complain about it during their week's stay. Of course this amazing house is cleaned thoroughly before and after every guest, and has been treasured and maintained and appreciated by hundreds, maybe thousands of guests since we began sharing the Gnome House with visitors back in the 1990s. We could not still be in business and so popular with returning guests, word-of-mouth guests, and new guests were this guest's opinion held by others. Please check our reviews on Airbnb and other sites. I can't help but wonder what happened during their "vacation" that set them off on such a negative track. Some visitors to Orcas Island perhaps should have chosen another locale for their vacation, maybe the 17th floor of the Hyatt, instead of a hand-hewn cabin in the middle of Nature. Perhaps the travelling group had its own stresses; 4 adults and one child in 650 sq. ft. must have been too constricting. For most guests, $175 per night is quite a good "deal". To respond to some of their comments: the house never has "pet hair everywhere" as during the summer we don't allow dogs, and when we do, the owners and we are fastidious about cleaning up after them. The wasp nest they mentioned, is actually a swallow nest, which the gnomes requested we leave in place, and had they asked us about it, we could have told them the truth about it. As for the "fruit flies" they complain about, we all know that fruit flies come from inside the fruit YOU bring in, they do not live in a house. They live inside your own fruit. In the warm weather, people keep fruit in the refrigerator. Our hot tub supplier recommends using Clorox as it is thorough, yet easier on pipes and people. The Gnome House is located on our 140 organic farm, and on a working farm one will find a tractor, backhoe and other equipment; unless they consider mulch, wood chips, hay bales, etc. "debris" I can't imagine to what they are referring. We are sorry this guest was unhappy. Based on our popularity and hundreds of guest book "thank yous", we know our Gnome House is wonderful.

Very...very...very VERY DIRTY

  • 1 of 5

I was so excited excited to have stayed here. Based on reviews it seemed like a good place.... Until I walked in the door. The bedding is filthy and is clearly unwashed. There are cob webs all over the top of the ceiling and some sort of nest. There is crumbs and food on the side of the mstress in the room where the cubby bed is. The bedding smelled like pee and other pillows and sheets had stains. In all I was so grossed out. The people are very nice but I'm writing this be the truth needs to be told and they need to clean up this place. I'll never stay here again

An amazing place to explore the wonders of Orcas!

  • 5 of 5

The Gnome House is such an incredibly unique and amazing place. What Meg and Bob have created on their property is so wonderful. We went with our young (10 and 9 years old) niece and nephew. The Gnome House itself is fantastic. Just the attention to detail with the building construction is incredible. It's not a fancy place (think more cabin-like than fancy resort), but it has everything you need and is quite comfortable. But the real charm of this place is the property. The kids spent every day down at the pond on the property catching frogs and even swimming. There's a playset with the most amazing view of Deer Harbor. There are acres and acres of trails to explore, pick blackberries. And even a permaculture garden! In the evenings it was roasting smores in the fire pit or sitting in the hot tub under the stars. And Bob was so kind, teaching the kids how to catch frogs and making sure they were having a fantastic time. Really, it was a vacation to remember and we'll definitely be back.
