About Steve and Monika

We're a couple of accountants with two little girls that enjoy getting away from our busy urban life. We've searched for the perfect place for quite a while and finally found it!

Steve and Monika purchased this cottage in 2013

Why Steve and Monika chose Mount Hood

This area is beautiful and as interesting in the summer as it is in the winter months. We wanted a place that's a short drive from where we live. Being an hour away from Portland this drive is a breeze whether you're getting here Friday evening or heading straight to work on Monday morning. After a pretty long search we knew right away that this cabin/cottage was different from anything else that we had looked at.

What makes this cottage unique

The location is amazing, right on the river, with plenty of space around the house for kids to play. Easy to access from the road, but private enough. The house feels fresh and bright, not like some of the dark and moist cabins we looked at during our search.

Beautiful view and very well kept cabin.

  • 4 of 5

A very nice cabin right on the river. Property is very well kept and is just like the pictures on the HomeAway website. Would go back here again. Same minor complaints as others, small refrigerator and no shower curtain around the bath tub. Everything else is great and we did not feel uneasy in the neighborhood. Found that it was easier to get to the main highway 26 by turning left from the cabin on East Mountain Air Drive and them left on Lataurelle Ave and you will come right out at the highway.

Great place on the River

  • 2 of 5

We enjoyed a relaxing visit at the cabin and made a trip to Sandy Ridge Trail for mountain biking (only 5 minutes away).

The river location is perfect and the cabin served our basic needs (small frig, ikea furniture, and tub instead of a shower). No major complaints other than it would have been nice to have firewood for a campfire. Neighborhood is not the best, thus an evening walk from the cabin was not ideal. Other homes had yards filled with junk which makes an otherwise cute community look run down. But once you arrived at the cabin you were in a perfect location on the river.

Great family-friendly retreat

  • 5 of 5

My wife and two daughters (5 & 7) had a fantastic stay here. Amazing location and access along the Sandy River; cozy and comfortable accommodations; great recreation activities close by (Wildwood Recreation Site and Zig Zag Falls were BIG winners with my kids); easy access to shopping and dining too; and less than 1 hour from Portland. Really can't say enough about the breathtaking views either.

A very comfortable home and pleasure to stay at. Looking forward to visiting again in Summer months hopefully.

4.5 stars, perfect for a family with young children/toddlers, prompt communication

  • 5 of 5

I was very pleased with the location. There is a short path to the river and my children had lots of fun climbing over rocks along the river bed. It was also an amazing view from the house. The fire pit was located on the river bank and we did s'mores and campfire songs with the roar of the river right in front of us. There is a swing set with one regular swing and one for small toddlers and there was also a covered picnic table. Snow entertainment at Government Camp was only 20 minutes away. The local grocery store (only 5 minutes away) provided most everything anyone would need. If you need something exquisite, the larger town of Sandy is only 20 minutes away. This cabin is secluded with some other homes along the river, but it is still conveniently located so that you can get to other necessities if needed. One of my favorite amenities was the availability of children items. There was a pack-and-play, high chair, toddler books, and various toys. The owners also provide some extra linen and plenty of toiletries. The gas burning stove heated the main area well and smaller heaters easily provided warmth for the bedrooms. The master bedroom has a very luxurious mattress and pillows. The other bedroom has bunk beds and those mattresses were also comfortable. (I laid on them as well and fell asleep). The kitchen should have everything you need for a temporary stay. The place as a whole was very aesthetic and accommodating.

The following are some minor complaints that still do not warrant anything less than 4.5 stars. Simply, some things to be aware of so that your expectations are on par. Perhaps the owners will improve these items as necessary. 1) The refrigerator is small. There is a very small freezer space and we were able to fit one small frozen pizza and one regular frozen box of lasagna in it. That was max capacity for the freezer space. We were able to fit a gallon of milk, eggs, carton of orange juice, and other various leftovers in the refrigerator space. The height of the refrigerator is not any higher than a dining table. It would be nice if they had a larger sized fridge. 2) The toilet is very small. Almost like a kiddie seat. An upgrade would be nice. 3) There is a bath tub with a shower handle. Serves its function well, but it would be nice to have a regular shower.

I would not let the negative items above stop me from staying there again. The owners were very prompt with communicating with me.

Riverside home

  • 4 of 5

This is a lovely home with great big windows to look out at the beautiful Sandy River just steps away. We greatly enjoyed our stay there and enjoyed a very relaxing time. The town of Welch's is very close which has restaurants and a grocery store. The house felt secluded even though there are other properties with houses nearby. We will definitely be back. Only downside I would say is that it is difficult to take a shower in the claw foot tub. The kitchen could also use more cooking utensils.
