About John Lauro

After visiting Greenville, ME for 3 days, I put money down on a home! The North Woods area TRULY embraces the meaning behind Maine's slogan, 'Maine, the way life should be!'. I have enjoyed both the area and the people of this town for 14 years and counting. My kids have gown up vacationing here, and I hope their kids will enjoy it someday as well. Being from Philadelphia, PA this cabin is the PERFECT retreat to get away from it all!

John Lauro purchased this cabin in 2000

Why John Lauro chose Moosehead Lake

This is a comfortable, fully equipped house, secluded, private, and yet 5.5 miles from activities downtown. Relax by a fire outside and enjoy the night air and millions of stars in the sky, or sit comfortably inside by a wood stove fire, play games, watch satellite TV, or just have good conversations with family and friends. Morning coffee on the large front porch on a nice day makes it all worth it!

What makes this cabin unique

Once I saw the winter night sky for the first time, I knew I was home! I am not a star gazer, nor versed in astronomy, but the first time I saw the constellation Orion, and could view the ENTIRE archer profile, I knew this place was something special. I will also never forget one morning sitting on the front porch, drinking my coffee, when a bull moose came walking down the driveway, stopped, and stared at me for a good 4-5 minutes. We were just being good neighbors and enjoying the morning sun!

Cabin in the Maine woods

  • 4 of 5

The cabin is out of town and on a gravel road. We slept with the windows open and did not hear anything except birds singing in the morning and the breeze blowing through the drapes. There is a nice wood stove too. It is very clean. Everything worked, we grilled each night on the deck and listened to loons on the nearby Prong Pond. I would recommend this cabin to anyone who wants to be out of town a bit. We had a great time. There are mountains to climb and Moosehead Lake is pristine with mountains surrounding it. It's not too far from Baxter too.

Cozy cabin in the middle of the woods!

  • 5 of 5

Our stay in the cabin was great! Secluded, cozy, clean and well stocked! We had everything we needed in there. Towels, linens, pots, pans, plates, etc. The place was spotless when entering. I would definitely rent this cabin again!

Terrific Property -- Exactly as Advertised!

  • 5 of 5

Trust the reviews -- they're all right about this place. It's great! Private and secluded are the perfect words to describe this wonderful cabin. Very comfortable, well maintained, modern appliances, and the owner provides a helpful binder with all the info you need to explore the area. We spent a few days here in mid-July and the cabin stayed nice and cool through some particularly warm, sunny days. Didn't see any moose, but the star gazing was terrific. I would recommend this place to anyone seeking to get away from the world for a while, whilst also being relatively close to town. Definitely make time for the State Park nearby where you can swim or hike around the breathtaking Moosehead Lake area.

Owner's Response: I'm so glad you enjoyed the place and I appreciate the nice review. I feel the seclusion is also one of the best parts of the cabin - your not too far from town at all, but you feel like you are in the middle of nowhere. Sorry you didn't see any moose, but I always find you see them when you aren't looking for them. Maybe next time. If you come back to the Moosehead Lake region again for another getaway vacation, I hope you will keep me in mind and choose to stay at Moose's Hideaway!

Needs an updating

  • 3 of 5

We liked the location of the cabin, very secluded, very quiet. When we arrived the cabin was clean, but outside, someone left trash around the campfire area. We called the caretaker right away, and although I told her it wasn't necessary, this very nice woman came right over and took care of it. She also brought some additional toilet paper and paper towels. There was plenty of room for our family of four. It was nice the owners had board games there, which we made use of. In general we had a nice time.

Now unfortunately, the negatives...

We've rented a number of places on VRBO over the years, and one of my biggest pet peeves is - no updated pictures of the property. I understand putting your best foot forward, but if your place is ten years old, show some recent pictures of the place, not when it was built. Also, keep up with the maintenance, inside and out. If something needs to be replaced, replace it. If it needs painting, paint it. If the grass needs mowing, mow it, etc.

If you paid good money to stay somewhere you'd expect certain things. For example, you're renting your place for people to stay, you would want them to feel welcome by providing a place for them to put their clothes, but the dresser in the bedroom was filled with sheets and so was the side table, both of which should be replaced, the one dresser drawer front came off in my hand when I tried to open it. So we lived out of our suitcase the week we were there. While we're in the bedroom, the mattress should be updated. We used the washer and dryer (which was nice to have), but were shocked to find out it vented directly back into the bathroom, that needs to be corrected.

In the kitchen, the cookware needs to be replaced, the Teflon on the pans is coming off. The cabinets could use updating, along with a little more counter-top space. The dining chairs were all loose and rickety, one was broken and set against the wall. We found out it was broken when we tried to move it.

The loft upstairs was nice, the kids really enjoyed it, although a ceiling fan would do wonders for comfort in the cabin. As I said, just general maintenance and up keep goes a long way.

Owner's Response: Thank you for your review. I have to say, this was a very detailed account and the information is much appreciated. I apologize for any trash left around the firepit area, and I'm glad it was dealt with by my cleaning staff. I don't charge as much as some of the other places in the area, so with that said, this is not a 5-star hotel or resort. I asked the builder about the venting of the dryer, and he told me that all of the cabins are like mine because of the wildlife and surroundings, so there are no plans to change this setup - it has been this way for 16 years. No one has ever complained that there was no ceiling fan, and I don't have plans to install one because of that - you are the first. The rest of the items you mentioned are being addressed, and I hope to have them updated by next year after winter. Again, thanks for the information, and I am sorry it did not measure up to your standards of what you expected for such a reasonable rental rate.

My husband and I stayed 3 nights. We found the cabin very accommodating. Be sure to get specific directions cuz gps not quite accurate. John was quick to respond to our questions. Cabin was as described and comfortable. Bring bug spray for when outdoors.
