About Wendy & Ken Schweikert

Sunflower Farm is our home. Wendy & Ken love good food and wine, beautiful architecture and gardens, history, theatre, music, interesting people and worldwide travel. We're delighted to be your hosts in Maine and share the insider's secrets we have learned about the area we've called home for 4 decades. Also, Wendy is a Notary Public and thereby authorized to perform marriages by the State of Maine.

Wendy & Ken Schweikert purchased this apartment in 1993

Why Wendy & Ken Schweikert chose Downeast and Acadia

Sunflower Farm is a gorgeous property bordered by a fresh water stream flowing into the Salt Pond, a 4-mile long inlet from the ocean. Sited on a shallow tidal cove framed by Carleton Island, home to a nesting pair of bald eagles, osprey, blue herons, ducks and seals, it is a Maine paradise. Ancient Abenaki tribes once used this land as their summer camping grounds.

What makes this apartment unique

You'll appreciate use of this exclusive, private estate and the quiet beauty of natural surroundings. Sunflower Farm has 4 acres to explore, filled with gardens, squirrels, birdsong, and several separate outdoor seating areas featuring comfortable Adirondack chairs in sun or shade. Enjoy a good book or breathe in the fresh air and beautiful water views. You may use our kayaks (2 singles or a double) to explore the Salt Pond. Use our private pool to swim and sunbathe or get refreshed in the bubbling stream.

The Carriage House at Sunflower Farm -- a luxurious retreat for two!
average rating of 4.952381 based on 42 reviews

Peace and Quiet on the Salt Pond

  • 5 of 5

The Carriage House couldn't be more attractive. Our hosts have thought of everything--even terrycloth robes. The kitchen is filled with all the conveniences and all the necessary equipment. The king-sized bed is incredibly comfortable, and the living room is a perfect spot to read or watch the TV with every channel available.

On can watch the birds and the small animals that ramble across the yard from a small balcony. There is a wonderful vegetable garden and a small swimming pool nearby.

The night sky is something to behold. Stars are abundant!

We hope to return for another stay at the Carriage House and to say hello to our welcoming hosts, Wendy and Ken.

It's a perfect spot to get off life's merry-go-round and to smell the salt air.

Just what you wanted!

  • 5 of 5

Adventure or peace - both are present here! Kyack the Salt Pond or contemplate nature. The Carriage House is a well-equipped and well-kept treasure. The hosts are thoughtful and gracious. Loved the stay - highlighted by the 4th of July parade in nearby Brooklin.

Owner's Response: Thanks for your 5-star reviews, Jim & Rhona! I'm delighted you mentioned the Independence Day celebrations in beautiful downtown Brooklin, Maine. Population 824. From the local community band (in which my husband, Ken, plays the trumpet), to the 20-minute parade that includes many kids on bikes, baby strollers, old cars, a couple original floats and the local fire engines throwing out candy for the crowd, to the chicken barbecue afterwards on the village green -- this is small-town New England at its very finest. It is a Yankee flag-waving extravaganza on a small scale. Visitors are welcome and we're glad to have you!

The property was just as described

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful week here, we had everything we needed, from dishwasher tablets through to dressing gowns! The pool was gorgeous and we made use of both the kayaks and the bikes. It was perfect sitting on the deck and watching the birds and the bald eagle swooping into the salt pond through the supplied binoculars.

Gorgeous view

  • 4 of 5

My daughter and I enjoyed our 1 week stay in the carriage house, a 1 bedroom apt above the detached garage. The view was amazing. Every day, every tide, every evening brought something new to marvel at. Fireflies, the milky way, shooting stars, bald eagles, ducklings, even harbor seals in the pond! While we didn't get around to it, kayaks are available to take in the scenery. Blue Hill is a nice little town to relax in, a nice home base to explore the coast of Maine. Wendy and Ken are helpful hosts and we recommend this place, especially for nature lovers!

Marietta, Ga

Down East treat and retreat

  • 5 of 5

What a wonderful experience to wake up to this view over the Salt Pond every morning! The Carriage House was spacious, nicely decorated (ocean themed), and included were a number of "amenities" that we appreciated. A full kitchen with all the necessaries - including a bottle of wine to be enjoyed while sitting on the deck! Also there was a BBQ grill, washer and dryer, cable TV, kayaks for a trip on the pond. The hosts, Ken and Wendy, were thoughtful, gracious, and ready to answer any question. Location was excellent, quiet and serene, yet shopping area within minutes drive time. And the rest of the Blue Hill peninsula towns were nearby (go to Castine and Stonington). Acadia National Park not far away either. All in all, a wonderful place to enjoy the wonders of nature and relax.
