Your hosts, who have lived in the area for 45 years, will happily provide you with local information and insider's tips.

For those trying to decide which month is best to visit Sunflower Farm: MAY is the best month for birding in Maine, as the songbirds, shorebirds and ducks return to the area. JUNE is spring on the coast of Maine, lots of weddings and graduations, lupine begins to bloom the second week, strawberries ripen, gardens are being planted, and it's a great time to take a boat out to see puffins, seals and whales. The baby eagles learn to fly. JULY and AUGUST are peak tourist months, days are generally 70-80F degrees, all the restaurants & attractions are open, beautiful long summer days with sunrise at 5-5:30 a.m. and sunset about 8:30 p.m., cool nights. Farmer's markets everyday and Monday nights there are outdoor dances with a local steel-drum band. Blueberries ripen in August. Independence day has the unique small-town activities of a 15-minute parade and barbeque & games on the village green; the famous Blue Hill Fair is the official end of summer here. SEPTEMBER is back-to-school, the days get crisp and nights cool, there are country fairs and harvest festivals, leaves begin to change color. Lovely warm days to hike, bike, and canoe or kayak. Acadia National Park is no longer crowded. OCTOBER is when autumn colors reach their peak (about the second week), hiking is the most invigorating and you have the trails to yourself. Some restaurants & attractions close for the season after Columbus Day. Tour a corn maze and go apple-picking, take a drive to Baxter State Park for the fall foliage and see a moose, prepare for Halloween with Fright Night at the Fort.

NOTE: Lobsters are always in season! The ocean is never warm enough for swimming. We all hate mosquitoes too.

About Wendy & Ken Schweikert

Sunflower Farm is our home. Wendy & Ken love good food and wine, beautiful architecture and gardens, history, theatre, music, interesting people and worldwide travel. We're delighted to be your hosts in Maine and share the insider's secrets we have learned about the area we've called home for 4 decades. Also, Wendy is a Notary Public and thereby authorized to perform marriages by the State of Maine.

Wendy & Ken Schweikert purchased this apartment in 1993

Why Wendy & Ken Schweikert chose Blue Hill

Sunflower Farm is a gorgeous property bordered by a fresh water stream flowing into the Salt Pond, a 3-mile long inlet from the ocean. Sited on a shallow tidal cove framed by Carleton Island, home to a nesting pair of bald eagles, osprey, blue herons, ducks and seals, it is a Maine paradise. Ancient Abenaki tribes once used this land as their summer camping grounds.

What makes this apartment unique

You'll appreciate use of this exclusive, private estate and the quiet beauty of natural surroundings. Sunflower Farm has 4 acres to explore, filled with gardens, squirrels, birds, and several separate outdoor seating areas featuring comfortable Adirondack chairs in sun or shade. Enjoy a good book or breathe in the fresh air and beautiful water views. You may use our kayaks (2 singles or a double) to explore the Salt Pond. Use our private pool to swim and sunbathe or get refreshed in the bubbling stream.

Sunflower Farm is a birder's delight. May is the best month for birding in Maine. Besides the hardy year-round inhabitants like the bald eagles and friendly little chickadee, we have an influx of ducks, shorebirds and songbirds that arrive in May. A favorite group are the spectacularly-colored wood warblers. Four of the dozen or so common species to be seen here are the palm, blackburnian, yellow-rumped, and chestnut-sided. From the deck a variety of nesting birds are commonly seen including loons, cormorants, ospreys and eagles. Also, we can show you 6 nearby birding hotspots.

The Carriage House at Sunflower Farm -- a luxurious retreat for two!

What a perfect place to relax, be outdoors (or not!).

  • 5 of 5

Overlooking Salt Pond, this home is an unusually well-thought-out place to stay. We (my husband and I, the "elders") were there for a week. A bald eagle decided to visit the rocks in the pond, 200 feet from the house, as Wendy was talking to us on our arrival. Later on in the week there were eleven little horned grebes resting in the same spot.

The house is spotless, with wonderful personal touches, and everything we needed. Wendy and Ken were delightful to talk with. Ken lent my husband his music stand! There are three separate places to sit on the property with different views. My favorite was overlooking Carleton Stream, which had a foot high "waterfall" providing wonderful sounds. The town of Blue Hill is charming and Blue Hill Books is the best! Tradewinds for food shopping was much larger than we expected. The Barncastle Restaurant had reasonably priced, very good food. A great and unusually relaxing week. Thanks Wendy and Ken! We'll be back...

Owner's Response: Thanks for a rave review! I am glad you mentioned Blue Hill Books, which is a fantastic, independent bookseller... and that sun-dappled deck beside the burbling stream is a perfect little hideaway for reading and napping. Wed love to have you come again soon.

Tranquil gem near Blue Hill center

  • 5 of 5

I have had the pleasure of visiting Blue Hill many times and have always enjoyed the optimal positioning it has among many of the best parts of Downeast - it's at truly the crossroads of a number of interesting towns to explore, but also has the benefit of great restaurants and conveniences. Sunflower Farm is optimally positioned on lovely Salt Pond with excellent views and access to a great water sport site and wildlife viewing, in addition to a totally charming apartment that has everything you would need and is thoroughly updated with all the modern amenities. Town center is literally only five minutes away and it is set far back from the road so you hear only the birds and the lapping water. The hosts are gracious and helpful and have created a great vacation point for a couple or a single like me. Will definitely be back!

Absolutely wonderful stay!

  • 5 of 5

Wendy and Ken provided a wonderful place to stay. The carriage house looked just like the pictures, and even homier. The interior was comfortably decorated and well maintained, with a very comfortable bed. When we got in the first evening, there was a lovely hand-written welcome card with some locally made preserves. As comfortable as it was indoors, outside was spectacular! There was an outdoor balcony where we had our breakfast each morning, looking out at gorgeous views of the water. The grounds had benches overlooking the water and a dock with kayaks. We kayaked several times on the double kayak.

Wendy and Ken had several binders of local and regional attractions and great hiking maps. There were books on Maine, including a great book on Acadia. On the several rainy days, Wendy thoughtfully provided ideas for indoor activities still open in late October. There is so much to do in Blue Hill, no matter the season!

Many thanks to Wendy and Ken for being such wonderful hosts! We hope to return soon!

Santa Cruz,CA,

We really enjoyed our stay

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here and loved everything about it. We were about 40 minutes away from Acadia NP. There was road work and detour which made it a bit longer. The view here was amazing and we loved coming back to see the sky, Salt Pond and the tidal changes. Bed was very comfortable, kitchen had all you needed for meals and there was even a washer and dryer. There are detailed binders with information of the area and surrounding towns. Also, some great restaurant recommendations. We ate at two of them, Barncastle and Perry’s lobster...loved them both! Make sure that they are open as many restaurants close for the season. The local market was amazing and had all we needed. We hiked Blue Hill which was fun but a bit challenging in places. This place is very quiet and if you are looking for beauty and quiet, this is it!

Owner's Response: Thanks for your 5-star review! We are pleased that you enjoyed your stay and all was to your satisfaction. I'm glad you mentioned climbing Blue Hill since that is a cherished tradition for locals and visitors alike; for the benefit of future guests I will add a note to our information binders that there are two trails accessible from Mountain Road. The one to the left is a rocky challenge, the trail to the right is more like a mountain path. We sincerely appreciate your comments because the comfort of our guests is very important to us.

Wonderful retreat in scenic Blue Hill

  • 5 of 5

Loved our stay at Wendy & Ken's carriage house while leaf-peepin' in Maine! Clean, quiet, and loved the fact that so much thought was placed into what a traveler's needs are! Very relaxing, cheerful and coastal themed decor throughout. Kitchen well stocked for any seafood extravaganza you decide to prepare in house.

A plethora of info was available to pour over in planning each day's events whether it was hiking, dining, shopping, discovering other small oceanfront towns and their offerings.

Would highly recommend for a couple seeking all the comforts of home and comes with an awesome view -- a bird lover's dream!

Wonderful Property

  • 5 of 5

The perfect rental for a couple as it is private, well-equipped and beautifully and thoughtfully decorated and furnished. It is clean, has great lighting and windows and a television and radio that work perfectly. There is occasional noise from the road. This was a very minor issue and did not deter from our experience, but feel the need to mention as quiet is at the top of our list when choosing a rental. We enjoyed seeing most of the Blue Hill Peninsula, from Stonington to Brooklin to Surry, hiking up Blue Hill and exploring various public Trust lands. We would definitely recommend this property and its gracious and helpful hosts, Wendy and Ken.
