My husband and I played in the Bermuda Bridge Regional held at the Southampton Fairmont Hotel. The cost of the hotel was prohibitive, so we looked for alternative housing. We were so fortunate to find Whispering Waves. Wendell Simmons, the owner, met us at the airport and as we rode to the property told us all about Bermuda. The next day, he took us on a mini tour of the area, showed us how to get bus tickets and made sure that we were settled and comfortable. The bus stop is just outside the gate, and the location of the property is halfway between Hamilton and Dockyard where the America's Cup races will soon be held. Very convenient to get a bus and sightsee.
The studio apartment is quite small, but is well provisioned with mini fridge, microwave and coffee maker. There are plenty of thick towels, a tv and wifi, and use of a washer, . The only thing missing was a comfy chair. Unfortunately, the weather was cool and rainy, but Wendell graciously gave us a ride to the hotel during the poor weather. When I stumbled and broke two small bones in my foot, he loaned me a cane and carried us to the hotel every day. All in all, we loved staying at Whispering Waves, and made a new friend for life!!
Wendell and his wife Xinia picked us up at the airport and it was like catching up with old friends. They were very hospitable and could answer all your questions. We watched the sunrise every morning from the private beach that was only a 3 minute walk away. Wendell is absolutely right about location. My wife and I saw the whole island and there is no place we would rather stay then Southampton. There are no bad beaches and the island is amazing. If its your first time to the island then there are no better host's then Wendell and Xinia. Thanks for everything and hope to see you again.
My wife and I had wanted to visit and explore Bermuda for the better part of a decade. We finally made a point to get there to celebrate our first wedding anniversary over Labor Day weekend. We decided to go somewhat last minute and could only manage about 6 days for our visit...well, I don't think we could've possibly had a more enjoyable fun-filled time in Bermuda than we did thanks to Wendell's generous hospitality and incredibly useful advice.
I really can't say much beyond the plethora of extremely positive reviews you'll already be able to read here, but I can confirm it's all very true.
Wendell and his wife have years (dare I say decades? haha) of hospitality experience and it really shows. The guest house is isolated enough to have your privacy, but Wendell is kind enough to be available to you pretty much whenever you have a need or question to ask.
There is a bus stop in each direction within site of your doorstep. The front of the house overlooks the gold coast. The development has it's own pathway down to an extremely secluded beach. The property is walking distance to dozens of other beaches, each one unique and beautiful in it's own right (most of which are barely crowded as well, unless you visit Horseshoe Bay, which is also worth a visit of course). The beautiful scenery just goes on and on...The only problem we had was fitting everything in we wanted to see! We managed to squeeze in quite a bit in our six days, but that's DIRECTLY thanks to Wendell's introductory tour to the island after picking us up at the airport. The island is pretty small, but we'd never have fit in so much without the guidance Wendell was more than willing to offer. By the time he dropped us off from the airport we had a very good idea of how and where to use the buses and (most important to us) where and how to get around to all the best beaches on the Gold Coast. Not to mention a brief tour of Hamilton, some history lessons, many quick scenic look out stops, etc.
In fact our last two days were spent at Wendell's 2nd property up in Sandy's Parish and he was kind enough to fit in another guided tour of that area for us when we transferred to the other property!
I can't overstate the level of kindness and generosity displayed by Wendell throughout our stay. We've never had such a great host at a rental property throughout YEARS of such travel. It's a rare benefit to get such hospitality at what's already an incredible value! Thanks again Wendell!
Our stay at Whispering Waves goes over and beyond our expectations.. The location of this property is like no other on the island and the panoramic views are breathtaking..The beach is private, very clean and large in size..My husband and I had the entire beach to ourselves for two evenings, just amazing..Snorkeling is awesome on this beach and all snorkeling gear is provided for you at no cost!
Our rental was so nice and has a huge bathroom which is a big plus for us women!! You are allowed access on the property and there is a hot tub and lounge chairs overlooking the ocean.. Our rental had so many extras included in price : Beach chairs, beach umbrella, beach towels, shampoos, soaps, hair dryer, mini fridge, microwave, dishes glasses and so much more!!
We have saved the Best for last!!! The Simon"s family are the most kind and loving people you could ever meet. Wendell comes and picks you up at the airport and gives you a tour of the island. Wendell also shows you where the bus terminal is and explains the routes.. You have a bus stop located right in front of Whispering Waves which is wonderful.. My husband and I used the bus all week to tour the entire island, it's great and saves you so much money.. Wendell showed us where markets are located and even stopped at a store on our way to Whispering Waves so we could pick up some food.
Wendell's wife Xinia is so kind and she took pictures of my husband and I overlooking the ocean, her photography is just amazing! Wendell's mother Patrea is 90 years old and has more energy than I do
Wendell and Xinia have a daughter named Jasmine and she is a beautiful and talented artist. I recommend seeing some of her talented work.
Leaving was the hardest part..Bermuda is so beautiful and staying at Whispering Waves and meeting the Simon's family is a treasure. We will definitely be back there is no other place we would even want to go but Bermuda and Whispering Waves!!
Thank you so much for everything!!
I came to Bermuda to relax and get some writing work done. I am happy to report that I accomplished nothing whatsoever. So peaceful and relaxing was my experience that I neglected my work entirely (on reflection it was probably better left at home anyway). But if I had to neglect my work, I’m glad it was in Bermuda, at Whispering Waves on the exquisite South Shore.
A perfect match for the priceless natural beauty of the island are the owners themselves, who could not possibly have been more positive, helpful or charming. Wendell, his wife Xinia and mother Petrea are the perfect hosts, accommodating while never overbearing or intrusive but always there if you need them. They are high quality people, guaranteeing that your vacationing experience will be of the same caliber. From Wendell’s promised airport pickup to the last detail of the accommodations detailed in the VRBO posting, all was as promised. What you see is what you get, and what you get is a whole lot of comfort, peace, and serenity.
The location (and private beach!!) are superb. Even the view from the backyard is stunning. One of the best features about the place is that it is located right on the bus line (not that you ever detect noise from inside the apartment) and there is a convenience store and several restaurants within walking distance. Its feeling of remoteness combined with its practical convenience in getting around make the place a marvel. Whispering Waves is exactly where it, and you, should be.
There is more than I could say about my wonderful six days in Bermuda, but I have work to do! But I don’t regret a minute of my wonderful trip. If you can make it down to Bermuda I can recommend Whispering Waves to you unconditionally, with no qualifications whatsoever.
We recently had our 17th visit to Bermuda and had an absolutely great time staying at this rental. As noted previously in other reviews, Wendell, Xinia, and family are wonderful and very responsive. We discovered a broken beach chair and this was replaced by the next day (even though we had brought our own chairs and said there was no hurry). The accommodations are clean and comfortable (best sleep ever!). As noted by other reviewers the room is quite near South Road, but there really is no road noise that's bothersome. In our many trips to Bermuda we have stayed at Resort Hotels and other rentals, THE VIEW from the private deck in the front of the house is the best anywhere. This is a great place to wind down after a day at the beach. We did not utilize the bus system (rented a scooter from Oleander, a short walk away) but as noted the stops are within a few steps of the rental. This location is within walking distance to The Reefs Resort, Henry VIII restaurant, The Gibbs Hill Lighthouse (and Dining Room Restaurant) and The Southampton Princess (uphill, but not too far). Horseshoe Bay is also walkable (Wendell will tell you the shortcut). The private beach (Cross Bay) is beautiful and uncrowded (one day there were 8 other people there, most often just the 2 of us) and worth the effort of going down (and up) the stairs (I counted 122 steps). We are ages 59 and 58 and it was not too bad.
All in all we had a great time from the moment Wendell and Xinia picked us up at the airport until we were dropped off at the airport. Wendell even told us of a beach we have not visited in all these years. I guess we will have to return !! We look forward to staying here again in the future.
