We recently had our 17th visit to Bermuda and had an absolutely great time staying at this rental. As noted previously in other reviews, Wendell, Xinia, and family are wonderful and very responsive. We discovered a broken beach chair and this was replaced by the next day (even though we had brought our own chairs and said there was no hurry). The accommodations are clean and comfortable (best sleep ever!). As noted by other reviewers the room is quite near South Road, but there really is no road noise that's bothersome. In our many trips to Bermuda we have stayed at Resort Hotels and other rentals, THE VIEW from the private deck in the front of the house is the best anywhere. This is a great place to wind down after a day at the beach. We did not utilize the bus system (rented a scooter from Oleander, a short walk away) but as noted the stops are within a few steps of the rental. This location is within walking distance to The Reefs Resort, Henry VIII restaurant, The Gibbs Hill Lighthouse (and Dining Room Restaurant) and The Southampton Princess (uphill, but not too far). Horseshoe Bay is also walkable (Wendell will tell you the shortcut). The private beach (Cross Bay) is beautiful and uncrowded (one day there were 8 other people there, most often just the 2 of us) and worth the effort of going down (and up) the stairs (I counted 122 steps). We are ages 59 and 58 and it was not too bad.
All in all we had a great time from the moment Wendell and Xinia picked us up at the airport until we were dropped off at the airport. Wendell even told us of a beach we have not visited in all these years. I guess we will have to return !! We look forward to staying here again in the future.
This was my fourth trip to the beautiful island of Bermuda but the first as a lone traveller. I've stayed in a different rental each trip because there was always something not quite right, but this time I cracked it. The location could not have been better - right on the South Shore, literally an 8 minute walk to the fabulous Horseshoe Bay, 5 minute walk to Henry's mini-store and with the No.7 bus stops directly outside (although no traffic noise in the property). A few minutes stroll away is Cross Bay which is the private beach serving the handful of houses nearby which I had to myself each time I used it. Whispering Waves adjoins the home of possibly the best hosts ever - the adorable Wendell and Xinia, not forgetting their delightful daughter Jazzy and Wendell's darling mum Petrea. They will help and assist you with ANYTHING, nothing is too much trouble for them and they would never consider that you are bothering them. The accommodation was perfect for me. It was clean, comfy, cosy and cool (great air-con). The bed was one of the most comfortable I've slept in, the DVD collection was superb, the fridge had a freezer compartment (essential for ice for your Dark 'n Stormy) and there were plenty of electrical sockets. The bathroom was large with a full size bath/shower combo and a vanity unit worthy of a girl's toiletries and cosmetics. Heaps of lovely fresh towels (both bathroom and beach towels) means that you can travel a lot lighter. Other facilities are iron/ironing board, hairdryer, kettle, microwave, coffee maker and there's even a sun umbrella and chair that you can borrow for the beach The sun loungers in the garden overlook the ocean and it was so peaceful to take my dark n stormy there, early evening, and gaze out to sea planning my next thrilling day's events.
My booking went smoothly from the start with Wendell even phoning me in the UK to confirm some things which was very reassuring. The fact that Wendell & Xinia meet their guests at the airport is a great bonus (you're bound to spot the pink sign) and they give you invaluable tips on the drive back. They will detour for some groceries and other needs (thanks for your help at the Transport Dept Wendell) and point out all the best places to explore.
So what more can I say? You will not be sorry if you book this property and you will be extremely well looked after by adorable hosts with huge personalities and hearts.
I will be returning very soon - already planning it!!! Enjoy!
Just returned from a wonderful stay at Wendell’s place. As mentioned in previous reviews, one of the highlights of this apartment was Wendell’s hospitality. He picked us up from the airport, gave us a tour of the island and even stopped at the grocery store and bus terminal for us to buy bus tickets.
There is a beautiful private beach a couple of minutes from the house(beach chairs and umbrella located at house as well as plenty of beach towels,) but there are several steps leading down to the beach. For those that don’t want to make the climb back up, one of the best beaches on the island(Horseshoe Bay) is only a 10 minute walk from the house. Chairs/umbrellas can be rented at the beach, and there is a small area to buy snacks/lunch.
Most nearby restaurants are located in either the Fairmont or Reefs hotels which are about a 10 minute walk from the house. Don’t miss the restaurant at the Gibbs Lighthouse, which is a short walk away and probably our best meal on the island! Take a bus ride out to the Royal Navy Dockyard on a day the cruise ships aren’t in town – it will be much less crowded and you will be able to walk around and dine at one of the local restaurants without all the people.
I agree with all the positive comments made by previous reviewers. If you are lucky enough to stay at Whispering Waves you will benefit from a very competitively priced letting in a great location, a private beach that isn't thronging with over exuberant visitors and you will share the home of a wonderful couple that have many years of experience in the hospitality trade. Bermudian born Wendell will offer you his lifetimes experience of the best that this perfect island has to offer, the stuff that you are unlikely to get from the very large hotels on Bermuda, e.g. where to get the best take out fish and chips, the best beach to see the perfect sunset, or where to buy freshly cooked and piping hot marinated chicken legs and also the best walks to see and explore the natural beauty of this volcanic island, the nicest parks, interesting forts or great shopping. Xinia, Wendell's Costa Rican born wife is full of life and passionately supports her guests by sharing her own personal experiences of Bermuda. We especially loved the chicken celebration cake baked by the head of the family, thank you Mrs Wendell, hopefully we will be back to see you share our Queens major milestone century year!
We hired a moped to get about, my first instincts are for safety but as you can't hire motor cars and also the number of cars on Bermuda is strictly limited, the roads are relatively quiet. Furthermore with a maximum legal speed limit of 20 mph 2 wheels are a viable and safe option. Our "best ever" holiday.
This unit is part of a large lovely home overlooking the sea. You are basically staying in guest quarters and are truly treated as a family guest.
Wendall picked us up from the airport and gave us a lovely tour of the island including a stop for bus passes and groceries. On arrival, he gave us a tour of the property and introduced us to his family. It was a lovely welcome. Wendall and family were always available but they were also very respectful of our privacy, so it was a great mix.
The house sits along South Road and as stated by others the bus stops just a few steps up the street. Cross Cut Road is on the other side of the property, but is basically a private drive for a small enclave of houses and has very little traffic. The patio is on the ocean side and sits above Cross Cut Road with an incredible view. It is a very nice spot to regenerate and enjoy the surroundings.
The guest room is on the back of the house adjacent to South Road. There is a grassy seating area just outside the room and it is just a few feet to the steps that lead down through the gate to the sidewalk. The bus stops just a few feet up from the gate or directly across depending on which direction you are headed. It is an easy walk up the hill to Henry's for cocktails on the patio or a lovely dinner. Gibb's lighthouse is in walking distance as well.
The beach is gorgeous and as close to private as can be. You just walk across Cross Cut Road and down the steps - yes, there are a lot of them, but worth it.
The room is a nice size with a queen bed. There is a large closet with lots of hanging space. Tableware is provided along with a toaster, microwave and small fridge. The dresser stores beach towels and has all the tourist information you could want. The room is very comfortable and quiet. There is some traffic noise until about 10:00 pm but we were never really there enough to be bothered.
The bathroom is quite large with a tub/shower, large counter with one sink and toilet. Shampoo and bath soap are provided along with a generous supply of towels.
This is not The Reefs nor The Fairmont although both are within walking distance. But whatever this may lack in upscale posh it is made up with the warm and generous hospitality of Wendall and his family. Truly a remarkable experience for two people who have traveled extensively and experienced many levels of world hospitality.
My boyfriend and I took a quick trip in February to Bermuda. We picked this unit because of the great reviews and I must say, we were not disappointed.
The house is at a great location everything is close by and the view from the front of the house - oh la la!
We were close to the Fairmouth Southhampton Hotel, close to the bus stop (Bus 7 goes by the house on the main road - South Road), close to the rental scooter shop, close to the Gibb's lighthouse (13 mns walk), water sports activity were right around the corner on ''Middle Road'' which is the street behind the Fairmouth Hotel. They were many well known restaurants around. Everything is walking distance honestly.
Keep in mind that the room is in the back of the house, the breathtaking view is in front of the house by the hot tub and the grill. That did not bother us at all, it was great just having our privacy in the back. The room was extremely clean, everything at our disposal (from maps, to bus schedules to informational and educational books on Bermuda). Beach towels are provided, as well as a mini movie collection.
Our hosts Wendell & Xinia were just a breath of fresh air. They were really nice and very warm and welcoming. Wendell after picking us up took us on a little tour of the island and showed us great places were we could visit. He gave my boyfriend two options for dining, the cheap on and the expensive one.
We had a great time in Bermuda! I recommend the location.
P.S : For some reason I expected and assumed that the beach was right in the backyard. However that is not the case, it' just right up the street down the stairs. Very beautiful beach and very clean. We had it all to ourselves.
