This is our escape from the stresses of everyday life. As kids it was a special treat to go visit our resident relative and spend a Sunday at the beach. While in college our parents moved to Beverly Shores ! We have many fond memories of the whole family with boyfriends, and husbands and later nephews sharing summer weekends and all the holidays here.
Today, we have our own little escape from the stresses of our everyday lives and jobs and responsibilities. Our house is bathed in peaceful dappled sunlight of the woods filled with birds. We can watch deer and raccoons walk across the patio from floor to ceiling windows.. And the beach is just a block away. Most people come for the summer sun, sand and water. Lesser known is the water's fury after a storm and the quiet stillness of a fall afternoon. September is the most underappreciated month--the water is at its warmest, the days are warm, and the crowds are gone. If you like snow, it is a winter wonderland here. Bring a good book or some nice wine and sit by the fireplace and watch the snow fall.
We keep the house stocked with everyday necessities. 10 minutes away is Michigan City. Grocery stores, Walgreens, Walmart, fast food and fine dining can all be easily found. The Blue Chip Casino and the Lighthouse outlet Mall are also popular destinations. Upscale shopping and dining are easy to reach in New Buffalo. Chesterton is filled with quaint diners and Antique shops. Valparaiso offers even more dining choices.
In two minutes you can walk to the beach, and at night it's so quiet. Listen for the deer--they make horse-like sounds and in the fall the leaves rustle as they move through the foliage. There are more stars in the sky than you see in Chicago.
The Dunes Mart has some of the best soft serve you will ever taste. On a clear day, you can see the Chicago skyline across the lake--and if you feel like visiting the city, the South Shore will get you there in just over an hour. The train station and the Dunes Mart are located on the corner of Route 12 and Broadway, the main entrance to Beverly Shores. The town has one stoplight and that is where you'll find it.
It's a very small town and sometimes strangers wave hello as they drive by.
Fall colors can be breathtaking---you are surrounded, even inside the house. After the leaves are gone, there is a bittersweet beauty to the stark silhouettes of hundreds of trees surrounding the house. As the house is up on a dune, you see the bare treetops and below the bright blanket of fallen leaves.
This home is lovely and secluded. Perfect for a romantic getaway but also plenty of room for a small family vacation. Not only is it a short walk away from the closest beach access but it's also a very short drive to two separate public access areas with parking and restrooms. If you have umbrellas and a lot of other stuff to haul to the beach that might be a better option. We loved the beautiful town Beverly Shores and couldn't ask for a nicer location. A trip to the Dunes Mart for ice cream (and early morning donuts) is a must!! We also enjoyed roaming around the area looking at the beautiful wildflowers and bogs.
Linda was an absolute dream to work with for my last minute trip. Very timely communication and I felt more like I was talking to an old friend. She has also thought of everything for the renter's comfort. The house is just as described and I have already recommended it to others.
This was a wonderful beach retreat for a summer weekend. The house had all the amenities listed, so all we needed to do was to bring groceries, clothing, and beach towels! It was quiet, clean, and comfortable, and when it got warm, the a/c brought the temperature down quickly. Large windows let you see all the trees, and zero traffic. You can't beat the block walk to the uncrowded beach, either.
Linda made booking this house on short notice very easy. She answered all my questions promptly, and accessing the house was simple.
I recommend the Third Coast Spice Cafe in Chesterton for delicious breakfasts and lunches (when you don't want to cook yourself) and the annual Necktie Run in Beverly Shores for any runner who wants a friendly, well-organized 5k race.
Rented this place for a long weekend to spend time with the girls. It was perfect in every way....clean, spacious, well stocked kitchen, great instructions on how to use/find things and the location was just lovely! About a block from the beach. We were lucky to have good weather in November to stroll along the lakeshore. Communication with Linda, the owner, the top notch! We talked about renting again when the weather is warmer. I woke one morning to spy a deer right outside the bedroom window casually grazing! I highly recommend this place!
This rental house met all of our criteria to have a fun, comfortable vacation with family. The location was very peaceful, surrounded by trees. We saw deer while out on a walk. The beach was uncrowded and a very short walk. There is a hill but even our young grandchildren were able to navigate it easily. The kitchen was very well stocked with dishes, pots and pans, small appliances and utensils. We had everything we needed to make family dinners. We appreciated the instructions for how to use tv, etc. and the labels on the light switches were helpful. The house was very clean and had a nice floor plan. We also were happy to be able to park our car in the garage. When we had questions, the owner was very quick to get back to us in email and by phone. Great place.
While attending A July retreat in the Chicago area, I had the good fortune to find a rental house on Lake Michigan , that also served as a wonderful lodging for me during my retreat. This beautiful three bedroom, split level, charming lake house,is surrounded by beautiful nature vistas, visible, thanks to the full length ceiling to floor windows in most rooms. This
enables the light to play beautifully on the warm, wooded paneled walls, as well as provide great illumination, even on a cloudy day. The house has the ambience of a secluded space, but the Michigan shore is a mere block away. A well stocked and organized kitchen adds to the pleasure of cooking, and makes dining in a real pleasure. At the rear of the house is a peaceful patio and barbeque area for good weather use. Artistic touches within the house invite the guest to enjoy the peace and calm within, or enjoy any of the electronics;phone, stereo, or TV, DVD,with thoughtfully provided instructions making it easy to use any of these devices. The ambience of this house in the forest setting makes one reluctant to depart. In the future, I look forward to sampling other seasons on this special property.
Our family had one of our most relaxing vacations to date, and this was due in large part to the carefully maintained property at Beverly Shores. The rental process was organized, friendly, and professional. The location is prefect and my four year old daughter made the short walk to the beach easily - even with the mild incline. In all my vacationing I have never come across such an organized rental. There were clear, easy to find, instructions for everything in the house - TV use and internet to name a few. It was wonderful to also have basic items to use once we got there - such as soap and cleaning sponges for dishes. So many rentals on past vacations have necessitated us buying an entire stock of cleaning supplies simply to stay at a rental for a day or two! The house was immaculate - I have no idea how the cleaning staff manages to keep sand out of that house! The beds were very comfortable and offer both a firm and a soft mattress. During our stay we had a question and the owners responded within the hour via email. We spent our mornings picking out interesting pebbles on the beach and our evenings watching the fireflies in the trees (my daughter's first time). Felt like staying at a friend's house.
Two minute walk to beach. World-class birdwatching, blueberry picking,, close to artist studios (Chesterton) and upscale shopping (New Buffalo), easy train ride to Chicago. Lithuanica Park with pond, tennis courts and more a five minute walk away.
