Long Lake is one of the top five cleanest lakes in Michigan. It is a clear, natural spring fed lake which often takes on a turquoise blue hue making visitors feel like they are in the Caribbean. Long Lake is home to loons, blue herons and an occasional bald eagle. Fish inhabiting the lake include trout, blue gill, walleye, perch and small and large mouth bass.
Golfers will be greatly impressed with the quality of local golf courses. Two premiere courses include Thunder Bay Golf Resort just 10 minutes away and to the north of us Black Lake. Elk Ridge in Atlanta is not far, either. Golfers can play a different course each day and never drive over 40 minutes.
The Thunder Bay Golf Resort is also home to a large elk herd. Elk can be observed during all seasons. During the winter months patrons can go on horse drawn elk viewing sleigh rides to a cabin in the woods for a fantastic dinner.
The historical town of Alpena is only 45 minutes away. Visitors can attend one of many summer festivals, walk around the harbor and marina or visit the National Great Lakes Shipwreck Museum.
Other attractions include Ocqueoc Falls which is the Lower Peninsula’s only waterfall. Those who want a broader fishing experience might like the well-known Fletcher’s Floodwaters or Hubbard Lake.
Sports enthusiast will also enjoy snowmobiling on state trails in the area. The state trails are only 3 miles away and accessible by back trails. The state trail network connects to all of Lower Michigan. Ice fishing is another popular winter activity on the lake.
