The ' Borgo'- off the old Roman ' Via Volterrana 'has been rebuilt from ruins. Italian heritage laws are very strict and the whole village has been reconstructed on the same footprint as the original. Now we have a wonderful place for visitors to come and enjoy the Tuscan countryside within easy reach of all that Tuscany has to share with the world. 'Casa Bartoli' is part of what was a large farm building and is now a modern spacious 2 bedroom 2 bathroom apartment. The bathrooms are beautifully tiled in travertine marble.Terracotta tiled floors and ceilings with huge wooden beams supporting the roof are typical of the area. The main bedroom has a double bed and the second -which is a larger room-has two single beds which can be used as a double bed...both bathrooms have no baths-but showers are excellent with plenty of hot water supplied from the solar( supplemented by gas) system. All kitchen utensils and appliances are new- dishwasher,2 small fridges (one with freezer), gas stove and oven.A small fully automatic washing machine is also provided. The dining area inside seats 6 people comfortably-or dine outside at the 'al fresco' table under the trees... The swimming pool and spa are just wonderful for a dip after a hot days touring. Here you are central to all that Tuscany has to offer. There are many good restaurants nearby- just up the road- the nearest is"' Osteria Il Castagno" a nice little restaurant about a 5 minute drive away. For grocery shopping if you prefer to dine under the trees at home- there is the big PAM supermarket in Poggibonsi, the COOPs in San Gimignano and Certaldo or the smaller minimarket in Gambassi Terme. A day trip to Florence ( or Siena )is easy by train from the station in Certaldo, avoiding the driving and parking problems associated with each city. The Chianti Classico wine region can be reached within an hours drive. The ' Borgo ', down a quiet road in the countryside between San Gimignano,Gambassi Terme and Volterra provides "away from it all" tranquility. Please come and enjoy the wonders of the Tuscan countryside from a very central location...

About Gordon Bartley
I am an Australian, my wife is Japanese and we live in Sydney. Both of us have been very interested in travel from an early age, having met in the late 1960's working for a well known Australian airline. We have traveled to many parts of the world-but Florence and Tuscany have become our favourite holiday destinations. We are now retired, still enjoy travel and catering for guests in our Tuscan home.
Gordon Bartley purchased this Apartment in 2010
Why Gordon Bartley chose Gambassi Terme
My wife and I first visited Florence and San Gimignano in 1995.We then came back numerous times as we loved this part of Tuscany. We made friends with the owners of the Agriturismo we always stayed near San Gimignano and they introduced us to this development at 'Borgo Mummialla' where they and some dedicated local people were going to rebuild the 'Borgo' from total ruins. The village was abandoned many years ago and all the buildings had to be rebuilt from the ground up.Strict heritage laws ensured the reconstruction retained as much of the stone and terracotta etc from the original buildings as possible. Having had dreams of owning a house in Tuscany and knowing the people involved reassured us that this was a top quality development and we took the plunge....in the deep end...we now hope we can share this unique development with other visitors to our house....
What makes this Apartment unique
The original farmhouse buildings have been reconstructed from the ground up using a lot of the old materials, but everything inside is new including a washing machine, beds and all the kitchen appliances and equipment.Hotwater is supplied by a solar system ( with gas heater backup) as much thought went into enviromental best practice. The two bathrooms are beautifully tiled in travertine marble and the plumbing is all new...There are about 6-8 steps up from ground level to the front door-but once inside the apartment all is on one level. Most of the other apartments at 'Borgo Mummialla' are 2 storey,The swimming pool with spa is wonderful and great to come home to after a hot days touring as is the outdoor 'al fresco' dining area under the trees. The outdoor area is for use of 'Casa Bartoli' guests only-unless you invite the neighbours over of course. There is a great view across the valley, with Volterra on the horizon, from the kitchen and also the main bedroom..This is our 'dream come true' home in the heart of Tuscany... .

Lovely home, great location in rural Tuscany!
Lovely, large, and comfortable home for 2 adults and 2 teens. The setting and views are fantastic, as is the pool. We had some trouble initially finding this place; I strongly recommend that you follow Gordon's recommendations regarding arrival and do NOT rely on Google maps GPS coordinates. Also, follow his recommendations regarding picking up supplies (food, TP etc) on the way. There is a great grocery store (COOP) nearby in Montaione. Wifi is hit and miss (as expected ini rural Italy). Gordon was very responsive with any issues. I would not hesitate to recommend this place for a quiet lovely family getaway and a great base for exploring the hill towns. We particularly loved Volterra.
Thank you Wendy for your generous review....hopefully the wifi and fone signals will improve as time goes on. It would be a pleasure to welcome you at our house in the future...
High expectations did not disappoint!
Tuscany and accommodations were as beautiful as imagined. Our flight was late getting in so we arrived late and in the dark. Difficult to find but once I called Gordon he helped us. Gordon was very responsive to any questions we had. The internet was hit and miss but other than that it was perfect!
Not an easy place to find in the middle of the night-but I'm happy you enjoyed your stay and hope you can come again...
The villa was lovely! It was clean, spacious and equipped with everything we needed. The views were amazing. It was too cool for the pool, but it was clean and inviting. There were a couple problems with the oven and burners, but the owner and manager promised to have them fixed. The parking is off site but was just a short walk from the villa.
Thank you very much for your review and am very happy that you enjoyed your stay. I regret the problems with the stove and I can assure future guests that repairs have been made.
Thank you again for staying at " Casa Bartoli" and hope that you may be able to return sometime in the future.
A slice of heaven
We were hunting for our own "private" villa, but didn't have a full week. Lucky for us, we found Gordon's place. I can't say enough about how perfect it was: the views were amazing, the peace and quiet abundant, the pool--simply magnificent. The hamlet evokes a sense of history and deep connection to place, and is populated by some long-term residents as well as other guests. Plenty of privacy. Truly, the best part of our Italian vacation!
Thank you and I hope you can return some time for a longer stay in our little Tuscan " Borgo" . I am very happy to see your visit was the best part of your Italian vacation...come again soon!!!
Perfect Tuscany Hideaway
My husband and I were celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary by visiting Tuscany with another couple. During the planning stage, Gordon helped us out immensely with suggestions ranging from car rentals to restaurants. He gave us detailed driving instructions which led us directly to this countryside gem. The outside is beautifully rustic and the inside was warm and inviting with large bedrooms and modern bathrooms. The pictures do not do this home justice at all. We walked through the front door and across the open floor plan we could see the outline of the hill town, Volterra, framed in the kitchen window. Stunning! Every evening we would wander down to the gorgeous infinity pool and watch the sun set behind Volterra. Although there are other units in the complex we still felt like we had the entire place to ourselves. Gordon also surprised us with several bottles of prosecco to celebrate our big day. We loved how easy it was to jump in the car and within 20 minutes be at the hill town of San Gimignano. Make reservations at Le Vecchio Mura for the best food and the most stunning view in Tuscany if you dine on their terrace. Volterra and Sienna were easy drives. Want to go to Florence? Leave your car behind and hop the train in Certaldo. One suggestion I have is to stop at the grocery store on the way to the rental destination and stock up with what you need. Look for a "Coop." We would stay at this location again and again.
Dear Jonelle,Thank you for your kind words. We are really happy you enjoyed your stay and were able to enjoy your anniversary in our house. We look forward to your next trip...
Lovely apartment in Tuscany
This apartment is one of several within the Borgo Mummialla with amazing views of Volterra. The buildings are located at the end of a1-mile dirt road and it feels very secluded and private. The apartment is well-appointed and the complex has a beautiful infinity pool. When we visited in August the pool was never crowded. It was very hot during our stay and the AC in the apartment worked really well. Parking for all of the apartments is available in a dirt lot, which is a 4-minute walk, but you can use a parking area right outside the building to unload when you arrive. San Gimignano, which we visited several times, is only 15 minutes away. We also went to Florence and Sienna, both good day trips. I would definitely recommend a good GPS to find your way around (signage is very confusing in Italy) and would also recommend getting what you need in terms of food, sundries, etc. before you arrive at the apartment if possible. Nothing is open on Sundays and when we arrived very late on Saturday after a long day of travel, the only grocery store open was over 20 minutes away in Certaldo. There is a supermarket located in San Gimignano but the hours are very limited, so if you plan on eating a lot in the apartment, plan ahead to shop at the grocery stores (called COOPs). There are pamphlets in the apartment regarding restaurants, supermarkets and places to visit. We particularly loved Le Terrasse, recommended by the owner, which is maybe 10 minutes away. This restaurant has some pretty views, but it’s part of a gas station and you wouldn't think to stop there, but the food is really amazing - one of the best meals we had! The apartment was really comfortable and the complex is quiet at night. There were only a few items that I'd mention that could be improved: There is a very small freezer area of the refrigerator and only 1 or two very small ice trays, so it would've been helpful to have more trays. We also purchased paper towels, toilet paper and soap as it was limited in the apartment. Both of these are very minor things given how wonderful the apartment was. Gordon, the owner, was very easy to contact with any questions we had before we arrived. Would definitely recommend!
Thank you for your review of our house. The reviewer is correct in saying that paper towels, toilet paper and soap are something a guest must provide, as it not a fully serviced apartment. I try to have an adequate supply of these items on hand at the start of the season-but if the supply is exhausted-so be it. Had to have 2 small fridges to keep the Tuscan atmosphere in the kitchen. Will get more ice trays for the freezer..GB
Borgo Mummialla is a little 'off the beaten track' down a gravel road in the countryside between San Gimignano and Volterra, near the ancient Bagni Di Mommialla hot springs on the Roman ' Via Volterrana'. This once abandoned 'Borgo' or farming hamlet has been rebuilt under strict Italian heritage laws to retain the original external dimensions and materials. Internally all is new and modern-but we have tried to keep the 'country' feel as much as possible. Environmental considerations include solar hot water and energy efficient appliances including a small washing machine. There is a dedicated outdoor 'al fresco' dining area with table and chairs under the trees for 'Casa Bartoli' guests ...The large swimming pool is wonderful....It is available to all guests at the 'Borgo' -some rules apply so please check these and park your car in the car park back up the entry road after dropping off your baggage..This is a great central location to explore all of Tuscany as Florence, Siena,Pisa and the coast are an easy day trip from here.San Gimignano and Volterra are 15 to 20 minutes drive from the Borgo. The choice of vineyards for wine tasting and cellar door sales are innumerable and the ' Gallo Nero' Chianti Classico region is a nice day trip.If you fancy a day in Florence-leave your car at Certaldo station and catch a train..you will be there in about an hour and will avoid driving and parking hassles. Even if you want to spend a night in Florence-leave the car in Certaldo and pick it up next day...A stay at ' Casa Bartoli ' gives you the unique experience of staying in a once deserted farming village brought back to life by local people who see the value in their heritage.... there are several good restaurants nearby and for grocery shopping there is a large 'PAM' supermarket in Poggibonsi, COOPs in San Gimignano and Certaldo or a smaller-but still very good little shop in Gambassi Terme. After a big day touring and sight seeing there is nothing better than to return to the tranquility of Borgo Mummialla, away from the crowds, have a swim in the pool and just relax with only the sounds of nature..( and a glass of vino), under the trees or by the pool....
