Christopher Kimball's Vermont Farmhouse

Bedrooms Studio
Space 4,000 sq. ft.
Property type farmhouse
Minimum Stay 3 - 4 nights

About the property

Originally part of a large dairy farm, this 200-year-old farmhouse (known locally as the Carver house) was completely renovated in 2007 and was used for many years as the set for a public television cooking show. The property includes a large horse barn, a dairy barn, an antique brick smokehouse, and a milk house. The house is located near Manchester, Vermont in a small, classic New England village.

The kitchen is complete with DCS ranges and ovens, Kohler sinks and fixtures, and has a wonderful view out back of the barns and meadows. The dining room is capable of accommodating at least a dozen guests, the living room has a working fireplace, and there is a mud room, wraparound & screened-in porches, and a brick patio off the back.

The home is chock-full of antiques. It comfortably sleeps 10, in 4 bedrooms, each with a queen bed, and 2 of the bedrooms include twin beds. We also have two twin air mattresses available as well as a crib and a pack 'n play. There are 2 1/2 baths -- both full baths feature beautiful tiled showers and one includes a separate bear-claw tub. There is also a full laundry in basement (washer & dryer).

The home contains a Google widescreen TV with access to Netflix and Amazon Prime Videos, a DVD player, Direct TV service, and general high-speed wifi access throughout the house. Phone for local and long distance calls. Alarm clocks in all bedrooms. Hair dryer, local maps, and firewood also provided.

A beautiful, welcoming home for a family gathering

  • 5 of 5

Our family came together for a few days in Rupert Vermont to spend relaxing time together. There was conversation, games, laughter and - of course cooking. The house is beautiful with a lot of attention to detail. It was just a short drive to Manchester [check out the Northshire Bookstore]. Our two year-old granddaughter celebrated her birthday during our stay and really enjoyed the collection of books, puzzles, riding toys and even the children-friendly eating utensils. We will be back!

Nothing but magnificent things to say about this house! We rented the home for Thanksgiving and for a houseful of foodies it was an amazing 3 days. We cooked more food than we could eat and brought home so many goodies. Even my nephew got the cooking itch and only wanted to cook more. And all the recipes came from the Cooks Country/ American Test Kitchen cookbooks in the house. The house is immaculate, modern with that farmhouse charm and we had a spectacular time. We could not have picked a more perfect location to celebrate Thanksgiving in a dream kitchen setting. When we arrived on Wednesday afternoon, all busy prepping for the holiday when there was a knock on the door and a local bakery in West Rupert dropped off a couple of fresh pies. They were delicious! We also gifted left a bottle of the best maple syrup from Two Pigs Farm! Two of the nights while walking the dog or running out to the porch to get more wood for the fireplace we heard cows mooing. And of course the church bells next door was a delightful treat throughout the day. Perfect setting, we did not want to leave! The kids love the board games as well. The property management was fantastic to work with and the process of renting the home was fantastic. We LOVED, LOVED, LOVED the home and are definitely planning a trip back hopefully in the warmer weather so we can enjoy the outdoors.

Cook's Country, Indeed!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful home with an absolutely gorgeous & fully functional kitchen and a lush lawn for whiffle ball and other yard games! We cooked dinner for 10 people every night during our 4 night stay and we couldn't have asked for a better suited vacation home. Every inch of the house is well maintained, very clean and very welcoming – it's a great mix of modern amenities and old farmhouse charm. The property management team is very friendly and attentive, the entire process was easy and very well communicated. The area is quite rural but there's a rail-to-trail access just up the road, great for cycling and runners. There's also a few local swimming holes within a 15 minute drive and if you're looking to shop and or eat out, Dorset and Manchester are both less than 30 minutes away. We all hope to visit again soon!

Great Stay In Rural Vermont

  • 5 of 5

Great place to stay for fans of the Cook's Country TV show or any of Christopher Kimball's works. Very well equipped house. Beautiful, comfortable home with lots of room to invite guests to stay with you. You'll find a wide assortment of books, cookbooks, television viewing options and board games. Beautiful porch and enough rocking chairs for all. The kitchen is well stocked with pantry staples and basic supplies. A great place to stay for a relaxing vacation.

Hidden Gem for a Relaxing Weekend

  • 5 of 5

We took our 3 children (4, 10 and 12) for a weekend getaway to see the fall leaves for the first time (we live in Texas where you don't get nearly as many fall colors). I wasn't quite sure what to expect, because many of our vacations are in more busy, big cities. But this was such a great experience, we've already booked it again for next year. First the house is absolutely beautiful. It is homey and comfortable with updated bathrooms and of course, an amazing kitchen. The property is perfect for a family - we brought a soccer ball to kick around the yard, but the house came stocked with board games, jigsaw puzzles, and little toys that our 4 year old delighted in finding. The hosts are the some of the most gracious of any HomeAway owners that I've ever met, and communication was always easy. But let me tell you how gracious - when we arrived, there was a cookbook for us to take home and a large bottle of the most delicious maple syrup I've ever tasted - so good we ordered more when we got home. The next morning, as we made breakfast, we had a knock on the door and someone delivered a fresh berry pie and a box of cookies from a nearby bakery. I mean, it doesn't get better. The beds were comfy, the house had plenty of towels (also a welcome thing not always found in rental properties). The house was spacious - we were a family of 5, but there could have been a second family of 5 sleeping comfortably with us. We drove into nearby Dorset and Manchester and then went the other direction the next day, but we enjoyed Dorset and Manchester the most. There were quaint restaurants and bookstores and the trees were just unbelievably gorgeous. We enjoyed a fire in the fireplace nightly and hot chocolate. It was the most relaxing vacation we've had in a long time and I am thrilled to be coming back. 10 thumbs up!

Dorset is home to the Dorset Inn (excellent food served in the Tavern), summer theater at the Dorset Playhouse, and Pelletier’s general store with homemade breads, doughnuts, pastries, and general merchandise. Manchester, a short drive away, has extensive shopping, dining, the best Italian deli in New England (Al Ducci’s), and plenty of entertainment options.

Surrounding area activities include hiking, cycling, tubing, golf, horseback riding/shows, antiquing, outlet shopping, summer theatre, assorted other arts and area festivals and more. A former railroad bed, now a walking/hiking trail, is just a short walk away, offering over 20 miles of fabulous Vermont landscapes.
