About John Swailes
My family and I have been sharing our home with new acquaintances like you for almost 30 years. For many of them, and to my own delight, this has now become their surrogate family home too. To the best of my recollection, that was well before there was a VRBO, a HomeAway, or an Airbnb! We would be delighted to share it with you too. I am a Nuclear Engineer, a retired US Naval (submarine) officer, a retired Electric Utility executive, and a retired US DOE executive. I am working currently as a contractor and consultant. Under contract in Chattanooga, TN presently. Reside in MD part time, and in MN part time. Like to read, sail, swim, waterski, snow ski, hike, mountaineer, bicycle, canoe, XC ski, dabble in digital communications, and am a licensed amateur radio operator (HAM) Own this cottage in MN on Horseshoe Lake, a Columbia, MD townhouse, and a condo in Solomons, MD on the western shore of the Chesapeake Bay.
John Swailes purchased this Cottage in 1992
Why John Swailes chose Backus
Lived on this lake every summer for 68 years. Family on this lake for 97 years. Love it summer or winter! My family owns the house next door to the north and the lots between the two houses. My mother's father (Don Newland) bought the property next door to the north after he returned from World War I and then built one of the first cabins on this lake in 1922. Papa's original rustic log cabin was replaced by the current next door small home in 1946, right after World War II. My parents honeymooned there in 1947. I visited this lake for the first time in the summer of 1950 two weeks after my birth. I have been here numerous times in each year between then and now. I bought this property, where my current home resides, in 1992. It was the fourth time that the property had been for sold since a small frame home had been built upon it in 1926 by an aging German bachelor (Herbert Landwehr) master carpenter. Herb retired to this property in the 1940's. I knew this gentleman very well. I hunted and fished with him, my grandfather, and my father on and around the lake. Herb owned this property and lived here until his death in 1964. He left the property to his cousin. The cousin eventually sold the property and a sequence of owners enjoyed the lake and that same original house until 1992. I bought the property in 1992 and modestly improved and remodeled the original house several times. That sequence of efforts evolved over years into the net very substantial upgrade that is this current home. My grandfather passed away in 1962. My grandmother passed in 1988. My mother passed in 1992. My father passed in 2011. The well kept property to the north remains today in the hands of my brothers. Between us three we have 9 children all of whom routinely visit and stay at our homes on Horseshoe Lake. My brothers and I have planned for and hope to pass these wonderful living spots along to our nine children. We are now prepared to do so, when the time is righ
What makes this Cottage unique
Small lake. Pristine spring fed water. Low boating traffic on the lake as compared to White Fish Chain, Gull Lake, Ten Mile Lake, Leech Lake, Mille Lacs Lake, etc. More suitable for families in many ways. More suitable for children venturing out on their own. Better wake boarding and water skiing due to low wave height and quiet boating conditions. Many bays on the lake. Always a calm spot for trick skiing and wakeboarding acrobatics. Always good fishing. Great bass fishing. Good walleye and northern fishing. Grand Piano for group music and singing Modest library of classic novels and literature. Please leave the books when you depart! Great place to have children fish, swim, boat, and participate in recreation with water toys of age appropriate complexity. The lake has light traffic for much of the year and therefore overall hazards are less difficult to manage than on a busy lake. The lake bottom at the cottage location is sandy with a gentle slope, so there is less likelihood of immediate full immersion other than by falling or jumping off of the dock. Children, pets, and adults require lifejackets and continuous oversight to ensure their safety in and around the water. House was all new in 2013. Roomy open 3 bedroom and two bath cottage. Full laundry. Full living area with connected kitchen, living, and dining spaces. Beautiful bright sunroom seating adjoins kitchen and overlooks the lake/beach immediately in front of the house. Spaces flow comfortably together so no one is left out but there are lots of nooks for quiet reading or work. Thoughtfully designed and functional house with top quality commercial grade gourmet kitchen. Natural sunlight throughout with plentiful glass for views of the lake as well as surrounding woodlands. Bedrooms have full closets and dressers. Master bedroom with ensuite bathroom. Sleeping loft has areas for children or adult guests. Spent almost four years designing and preparing to build this new home

Absolutely wonderful place to stay up North!
Thank you Eric. I am happy that you enjoyed our home.
Relaxing & Beautiful
House was clean and organized. The furniture, finishings, and technology were all high end or antique. Given we stayed inside the whole time it was a great place to relax and enjoy the ambiance. Loved the layout of the property. The kitchen was really easy to use. We played cribbage, did puzzles, watched movies and enjoyed the downstairs. Our kids played Legos and make believe up in the unique loft for hours . The home was very warm and inviting. We typically like to try new places but would definitely return. Thank you.
Beautiful house and area for a girls weekend. Much fun was had at the dining room table where cards and dice were played. There was plenty of room for everyone to sit comfortably and nice open windows so we could enjoy the little sunlight we had in the minnesota winter! We all were very impressed with the abundance of kitchen supplies available for the meals we cooked. As we brought everything we needed, we didn’t have to go anywhere, but stores were nearby if we had.
Perfect location with amazing amenities. The kitchen is outfitted with appliances fit for a king. Beautiful views throughout the property. Comfort all around.
An amazing weekend at an amazing home
What a wonderful home! We could not have chosen a more perfect place for our family to stay. We needed some down-time to catch up, relax, and just spend time together. This home provided us ample space and all the amenities that made this a perfect place to stay. Thank you John for your hospitality!
