About W. Franklin Aultman

Frank Aultman, Proprietor

- Frank was born and raised on Ten Horse Farm and has been restoring the old farm and The Guest House for several years.

W. Franklin Aultman purchased this house in 1912

Why W. Franklin Aultman chose Georgia

The Guest House is situated just off the main driveway to the turn of the century Planter's House of Ten Horse Plantation which now farms timber and pecans with beautiful pastoral views of fields, meadows and orchards. The remainder of the property is a wild life conservation area. It is very private, peaceful and quiet. It is convenient to the town of Bainbridge (a mile from the city limit) yet feels away-from-it-all. The location is extremely convenient to the Boat Basin on the Flint River for fisherman (5 minutes away) and also a short distance to Lake Seminole. The Capital City of Tallahassee is a 45 minute drive and the beaches of the Gulf Coast is only a 1-1/2 hour drive.

What makes this house unique

Located in Georgia’s historic “Plantation Trace” region, Ten Horse Plantation was once one of the largest working plantations in the area during the last half of the 19th century. The community at Ten Horse Plantation consisted of the owner’s family, tenant farmers and sharecroppers who prospered by living and working together after the devastating close of the Civil War. The community raised and grew everything they needed. The only thing they bought was salt for seasoning and curing.

Unlike Southern Anti-bellum Architecture depicted in movies like 'Gone With The Wind,' Ten Horse Plantation's Planter's House represents a more typical plantation style. Plantation owners and their families (including the owner's children) worked side-by-side with tenant farmers and sharecroppers. Ten Horse Plantation is noteworthy in that it was among the first to have gravity-fed running water from a water tower to the houses, barns and animal troughs. It was among the first to plant pecan orchards and planted pines. The Planter's House was one of the first in the community to be built with a Delco Plant providing electricity to a light bulb which hung from the ceiling in every room. The 2nd generation owner was instrumental in bringing electricity to this part of the country and was among the first presidents of the regions Rural Electric Company. At Ten Horse Plantation, there was a wash house, smoke house, chicken house, mule barn, corn crib, hay barns and several tenant houses on the property. Crops grown consisted of cotton, corn, tobacco, cane, soybeans, peanuts, pecans and timber. Animals raised included cattle, hogs and chickens. Products produced included milk, butter, seed, sugarcane, turpentine and hay. From the beginning, Ten Horse Plantation was in the forefront of modern agricultural practices, and invented more than a few.

Getaway from it all experience!!

Ten Horse Farm

My husband and I went to southeastern Georgia with the explicit goal of relaxing, exploring new areas and really enjoying the real southern food and atmosphere which is so inviting. The house is immaculately appointed and has everything one needs. The property is beautiful and as you look through the window, you are gazing into a pecan orchard. It does not take long to imagine a life of the original settlers and hardships and sweat equity that went into the establishment of this plantation. Thank you Franklin for offering this opportunity to experience the country beauty of Bainbridge area, the chance to feel relaxed and rejuvenated in an exquisite property, wonderful facility and an extremely wonderful planters home. The home was beautiful, clean and had everything we needed, great customer service from the owner. The restaurants we visited were Yesterday's Diners and Uncle Bill's Pizza, which we highly recommend. After coming home, we have already recommended this place to a few of our friends and family member's. If you are looking for the perfect getaway from it all, this is it!!

Wonderful experience!! Beautiful house & property.

  • 5 of 5

The house and property were exactly as described in the ad - beautiful! The house was clean and very well maintained. The owner came over when we arrived and was very pleasant and helpful. I would definitely recommend this property to my family and friends. We drove to Port St Joe in under 2 hours and enjoyed a day at the beach. The whole experience was relaxing and problem-free.

Walk through the Old Oak Grove right out the back door where a 300 year-old live oak tree still stands or picnic in the Glade under Old Oak Grove’s canopy. Or, take a stroll through the 100-year old pecan orchard right out the front door. Or hike through a choice of pastures on the property. You’ll love the private wildlife sanctuary that surrounds the Guest House where wildlife walks right though the yard. Enjoy an abundance of deer, turkey, Bob White quail, dove, fox squirrels and the multitude of other birds that reside at Ten Horse Farm. For local activities, we strongly recommend boating up the Flint River to some of the most beautiful, unspoiled areas you’ve ever seen. And boat down the Flint to Lake Seminole were you’ll experience some of the best bass fishing ever. Boat ramps to the Flint River and Lake Seminole are only 5 minutes away. Another activity is to drive through the countryside and watch the farmers plow the fields in winter or spring, cultivate the crops in summer and harvest in the fall. You’ll be amazed at how technological and immense the scale of farming has become. Also highly recommended is to make reservations to see Swamp Gravy at Cotton Hall Theatre in Colquitt, GA, only 15 minutes away. We recommend Bonnie Blue Restaurant and Bar for local dinning in Bainbridge or take a 15 minute drive to Tarrer Inn in Colquitt, one of our favorite restaurants in the area. Or, choose from many fine restaurants in Tallahassee or Thomasville. It is worth making a special trip to Thomasville to visit Pebble Hill Plantation where Jackie Kennedy sought refuge after the assassination of JFK, only 60 minutes East. Be sure to visit Bainbridge and just talk to people. You will enjoy the true, authentic Southern accents and the friendly charm of this old Southern town. And be sure to take a driving tour of the historic homes of Bainbridge. Treat yourself to lunch or dinner at The Wakulla Springs Hotel in the Edward Ball Wakulla Springs State Park, Florida. And while your there, take the glass bottom boat tour up and down the beautiful Wakulla River. This is one of the most unspoiled areas in the country. Wakulla River comes out of the ground at a rate of 200-300 million gallons of water a day. It is classified as a first magnitude spring and is the longest and deepest known submerged freshwater cave system in the world. While your there, visit small coastal towns like St. Marks, Carrabelle, Cedar Key and one of our favorite coastal towns - Apalachicola. Apalachicola is home to the best oysters this country has to offer, and they come right out of the Apalachicola Bay. And be sure to take a driving tour of the town. It contains exquisite southern architecture with old charm. Or visit the pristine, sugar white Gulf Coast Beaches from Mexico Beach west to Fort Walton Beach. There are great seafood restaurants all along the coast to sample and enjoy.
