we have owned our unit for 20 years, using it for ourselves 3 weeks per year. Anchorage is family oriented, we love to hear the great vacation stories from everyone.
Don Norkus purchased this condo in 1992
the east end of st thomas is the best. you cant get bored here, if you get restless take a ferry or rent a boat and visit the other US an British VI. its best to see it all from the water. so many beautiful beaches within a short walk or ride
we play tennis, visit beaches, enjoy great dinners out, really chil. we normally have breakfast and lunch at our condo, as we go back and forth to the pool and beach.
My 12 year old grand sailed in a regatta at the St Thomas Yacht Club that is just paces from the pool at the Anchorage. I asked her to comment on the condo and she said, "pretty" and "Amazing!" The view is spectacular from this 3rd floor unit and the condo is large with 3 bedrooms. The furnishings are just fine for a beach place and they are cute. The large porch is perfect for reading, watching the sailing and just being quiet. 12 days without car noise, pollution, and all of the hurried confusion of a city in this quiet place was terrific, clean, lots of towels (beach and bath), games, books to read, great TV and Cable (a must when you have kids). New front loading W/D and good dishwasher were a plus and it is located within a mile of Red Hook and great pizza and home made ice cream! The tennis courts are in great shape and there is a gym as well.
We had a car (very cheap through Thrifty) and used it to go to St. John for a day trip and many trips to Red Hook for casual suppers, shopping for groceries and sun tan spray at Moes. Made one trip to KMart. Picked up friends at the airport. Tiny island really and while the distance is short the windy roads and slower traffic made for a 40 min drive to the airport.
About the owner: Don Norkus is without a doubt the nicest and most patient owner ever. We had a zillion questions and an a/c issue and he was right on top of all that was going on. After the A/C issue was fixed, he treated us to a fancy dinner at the nicest place about 5 min away from the condo.I would definitely want to rent his unit again.
About the APP: Definitely a great way to communicate and have all information you need at your fingertips (WiFi passwords, contacts, recommendations for restuarants, etc).
My family and I rented the Anchorage condo from Don from March 20-27, and we all had a fabulous time. The condo was roomy enough for our party of 7, and I especially enjoyed the large patio to drink my morning coffee and my evening glass of wine. We used the kitchen for breakfast only, but it was a well equipped kitchen for those who might want to cook more elaborate meals. The property is on the 3rd floor, so for those who have a hard time with stairs, this might not be the right fit for you. Not a problem for our gang though.
Having a washer and dryer was such a great addition to the condo. I don't necessarily like doing laundry, but being able to wash up our swimsuits a couple of times during the week was great.
Don was so easy to work with. In fact, while we were staying at the condo, we had a minor problem with one of the bathroom sinks. I emailed Don and he had someone out to fix it that day.
We didn't stay at the Anchorage very much during the day. It was our first trip to the Virgin Islands, so we wanted to go out and see as much as we could during our weeklong stay. During our stay, we took in Coral World and snorkeled right next door to Coral World at Coki Beach. We also went to the Mountain Top for a banana daiquiri and then went to Magens Bay for the afternoon. We went to Lindquist Beach one day, which was a very quiet, but beautiful beach (as if there are any ugly beaches, right?). One day, we booked a tour on the "Bad Kitty". The "Bad Kitty" is a powerboat that took us to the BVIs to take in The Baths, lunch at Cooper Island, snorkeling at Norman Island, and the beach at Jost Van Dyke. The "Bad Kitty" was fun for our whole group, but you need to be in pretty good shape to tackle The Baths. We took the ferry over to St. John a couple of days. One day we took the car ferry so that we could drive to Trunk Bay and explore the island of St. John by car. The car ferry was a long process, so if I could do it over again, I would probably have taken a passenger ferry and then taxied to the beach. Trunk Bay is stunning. A must do. Another day, we did take the passenger ferry to St. John because we had booked a sailboat charter with Morningstar. What a fun day on Captain Mikes 1950s wood sailboat.
As you can see, we had a great time on our trip to the Virgin Islands and hope to make it back soon! Thank you to Don for making the process easy.
My husband and our two grown children along with their spouse/fiance enjoyed six days at this wonderful condo. The location was perfect, being just minutes from Red Hook. The condo was well appointed and we had plenty of room for the six of us. Don was incredibly helpful suggesting activities and places to eat; all of which were spot on. We would highly recommend the charter service SeeSki, and Captain Thomas. We had a fun filled day island hopping. He knew all the right places to stop and we were able to see a lot of islands in one day.....most especially enjoyed Virgin Gorda....oh and our new favorite drink...bushwacker!! We travel a lot and I have to say my new favorite place is St. Thomas....can't wait to go back.
We had a wonderful stay at this beautiful condo, in a great location, with our 3 adult sons...a wonderful family get together before the oldest gets married in a few months. The view from the balcony is so relaxing...a wonderful place to enjoy your morning coffee or a sunset glass of wine. The condo is equipped with everything you need to enjoy your week- even a large cooler for day trips. Loved having a washer/dryer. Kitchen well equipped. Did most of our shopping at Moe's Fresh Market- pricey, but has everything- even gluten free items for those who need.
We are explorers so we rented a Jeep to get around. Driving around the island takes some getting used to but is the way to see it all. We sampled different beaches. Magens Bay and Secret Harbour are great places to spend the day. We enjoyed dinners nightly, at a number of great places including XO Bistro in the East End, beachfront at the Elysian Resort (walk to dinner on the beach from the condo), Sunset Grille at Secret Harbour to name a few. We ferried over to St John's with our Jeep. Great day! Beautiful island!. We also were very fortunate to know someone with a boat- or would have done a charter from East End for sure. Snorkeling at the Indians was amazing, a stop on Sandy Spit (Corona commercial island), a mooring and swim to your drink at the Soggy Dollar Bar on Jost Van Dyke is a must stop.
Only one big complaint...the week went too fast!
A wonderful family vacation, a wonderful condo and location, a wonderful host.
We highly recommend this condo. It's a beautifully appointed, well equipped place with a great view and great location. We have rented many places in many locations over the years but I've never found anyone, either private individual or rental agency, as responsive and helpful as Don. He answered all my questions so quickly. And that continues after we had places the reservation. He continued to make sure everything was good after we arrived. I couldn't have asked for anything more.
The condo has lots of equipment and games. Our family enjoyed playing tennis outside and playing bananagrams inside!
It's convenient to red hook, eastern side of the island. Restaurants are convenient. It's easy to get to St Johns.
Regarding managing the island in general: we took advice from another person to go to the Kmart at Tutu for groceries. Well, it's probably good to do that once for staples such as drinks, paper products, and cereal. But there isn't anything fresh there. We went once and then went to the food center or moes fresh market. Yes, they're pricey. But you can get most anything you need and on an island, it's expected to be higher.
We rented a car. Taxis are easy to get, but expensive. The roads are narrow and winding and they drive on the left, but the cars are imported from the US so the steering is on the left. Takes a but of adjustment in the brain.
More than enough room for 5 of us. Nearby good restaurants and activities. Good idea to have a car, we drove to beaches - Coki, Magens. Recommend taking a charter boat/ captain for snorkeling.
