My name is TRUE. Thank you for your interest in our home, MACON MANOR, which is celebrating its 126th year (1889-2015) on our quiet, tree-lined street in the heart of the beautiful, safe, and culturally vibrant Stuyvesant Heights Historic District in Brooklyn, which GQ Magazine has rightfully called “The Coolest City on the Planet.” We're about a 5-minute walk from the Utica subway station on the “A” (Express) and "C" (Local) line; the “A” connects you to Downtown Brooklyn / Brooklyn Bridge (about 10 minutes), Downtown Manhattan / Ground Zero (about 12 minutes), JFK (about 20 minutes) Penn Station / Amtrak (about 25 minutes), Port Authority Bus Terminal (under 30 minutes), Times Square / Broadway (under 30 minutes), and Central Park / Lincoln Center (about 35 minutes). There is no off-street parking, but street parking is free, safe, and fairly easy to get right out front.
We are easily accessible via car and several forms of public transportation. Many of Brooklyn’s hottest neighborhoods (Brooklyn Heights [and the Watchtower Facility], Bushwick, DUMBO, Fort Greene [and Barclays Center], Park Slope [and Prospect Park], Williamsburg, etc.) are within 5-15 minutes. JFK and LaGuardia are both within 25 minutes by car, and accessible via public transport. We are just a 1- or 2-minute walk from the best the Neighborhood has to offer (bars, boutiques, cafés, galleries, restaurants — such as Zagat-rated Peaches and Saraghina — and much more).
Yes, you can live like a real Brooklynite in this charming & rustic Garden Apartment, furnished with the IKEA furniture that you know & love. It is air-conditioned in the summer and well heated in the winter. Free Wi-Fi; original details and wood floors throughout. It was designed as a cozy space for individuals and couples who want a quiet & romantic retreat in which to unwind after a long day of taking in all the sights New York City has to offer, but it can sleep up to (8) (suggested maximum) or (10) (absolute maximum).
• The Red Velvet Suite: A large Bedroom with (1) queen-size bed (sleeps 2) + (2) full-size sofa bed (each sleeps 2) with quality mattresses (up to  more people can be accommodated on an inflatable queen-size Aerobed air mattress for $49 per person per night); sheets, pillows with cases, blankets and comforters; A/C; a flat screen HDTV with cable (including premium channels such as HBO / Showtime / Starz on Demand, which allows you to watch any movie or program they offer — Curb Your Enthusiasm, Game of Thrones, Girls, Sex in the City, The Sopranos, True Blood, The Walking Dead — whenever you like; there is also a cable channel for video games titles such as “Bejeweled 2,” “Diner Dash,” “Mummy Maze,” “Sudoku,” and others); a BluRay player with library of DVDs for kids & adults; books & games for kids & adults, including guide books to NYC / Brooklyn; (4) reading lamps; (6) full-length mirrors; exposed brick; accent lighting.
• A Sitting Room: A full-size sofa bed (sleeps 2); a 2nd flat screen HDTV with premium cable; a 2nd BluRay player; an iPod dock alarm clock; ceiling fan; (2) reading lamps; exposed brick; accent lighting.
• A large, fully-equipped Eat-In-Kitchen: Dining table & chairs for (8); full-size refrigerator / freezer; antique gas stove; microwave; coffee maker & grinder; toaster oven; blender; cooking utensils, dishes, silverware; hot & cold drinking water dispenser; steam iron & board; exposed beam ceiling; original art; complimentary coffee / tea / bottled water.
• A petite Bathroom: Claw foot tub / shower; hair dryer; and towels. Toilet paper and hand soap are provided. Especially large / tall people may find it a bit narrow — I am 6’3” / 220 lbs, so I have to sit on the toilet at an angle (these are old Homes, sometimes things were configured in odd ways).

My name is TRUE, I am an Artist / Designer / Filmmaker, and have been the Owner / Operator of MACON MANOR since purchasing the Home in 1999.
I moved from Los Angeles, CA. to New York to be a part of its vibrant culture (and to study at Sarah Lawrence College and The Cooper Union Art School) and then moved from Manhattan to Stuyvesant Heights because I found it to be much quieter and safer than living in Manhattan.
TRUE purchased this apartment in 1999
I purchased MACON MANOR because it offered exactly what I wanted – a Home with all the benefits of living in NYC without the less pleasant aspects of living in Manhattan, primarily: Apartments with much more space; a Block that is much quieter and safer; and a Neighborhood with a much greater sense of Community, in which I actually know my Neighbors and the Owners of the local businesses. All this just a 5-minute walk from an express train that can get you into Manhattan in just 12 minutes!
Manhattan is the most amazing place on the Planet – but it’s a really, really good thing to be able to retreat from its hustle and bustle at the end of the day, to go someplace where you can actually sleep through the night.
The Homes in the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District were built for the wealthiest people of the day in the late 1800s, when everything else in the area was undeveloped farmland. Throughout the course of the 20th century – as public transportation made it easier for the working class to get deeper into Brooklyn – the wealthy fled, and their Homes transitioned into the hands of the middle-class.
Living in one such Home, and having the chance to lovingly restore it and share it with Travelers from around the World is a very unique opportunity, one that we cherish.
The brownstone was located in a diverse upcoming neighborhood with a vast number of restaurants, cafes, and shops in walking distance. The subway station was also close in walking distance within a couple of blocks. The brownstone and the neighborhood has a lot of character and is very well kept and quiet. True was very accommodating by meeting us as we arrived and was extremely knowledgeable about the neighborhood and the city in general. The apartment is very open as seen on the website and extremely clean and maintained. It was very well stocked with kitchen, bathroom, and bedroom amenities. Our family enjoyed activities such as the Hop on and Hop off tour buses, visiting Harlem, taking the ferry around the harbor, shopping in Chinatown, Coney Island, and eating various New York staples such as: Carnegie Deli, pizza, Nathan's Hot Dog, and many more. We plan on contacting True for our next visit and would definitely recommend this property to our family and friends visiting the city.
True makes the stay hassle free. The place is wonderful and the location is amazing. Make sure to check out True's website for all the local shopping, food, and events. I will always look for this place when traveling to New York. The is the greatest place to stay.
This apartment is as roomy as it sounds in the description, well-maintained, peaceful and very comfortable. True was a wonderful host: he knows the neighborhood extremely well and was very generous with the time he spent answering our questions and making sure we had everything we needed. His website has a wealth of information about restaurants, things to do, transportation, and more! Because this was my son's first experience in NYC, we spent most of our time in Manhattan, but now we're eager to return to focus a visit on Brooklyn and Bed-Stuy. We'll be sure to stay at True's when we do. Thanks for an excellent experience!
Our stay was very nice. The owner was very helpful. The apartment was clean and we felt very safe in this area. One note that I have - this apartment has little windows and it's guite dark... Beyond that I highly recommend this place! Thanks to True for the hospitality ;)
True's place was perfect for us. There was 7 of us ranging from 10-68 yrs old. I was worried about my mom who is much slower then us and does not go at our pace at all. There were a few times when she would walk to the subway from True's place or vice versa by herself and it was completely safe. Very friendly people everywhere! always asking if we are lost and would get us in the right direction! TRUE was so so so wonderful ...her really took time with us and answered all our questions. Even went out and bought a shower matt for my mom:) I hope to be back to visit again and will be booking it with TRUE! Thank you so much for being so kind to me and my family!
It was great for our family. There were 7 of us and we all slept comfortably. The area was safe and convenient to restaurants and clubs. TRUE was excellent host. He spent a lot of time answering our questions and making sure we had everything we needed. Look it up when you are in Brooklyn. It is very close to subway, so very easy to get to Manhattan.
Built in 1889, MACON MANOR is located on Macon Street in the heart of the Stuyvesant Heights Historic District of Brooklyn, New York.
As you may have read in such publications as New York Magazine, the New York Times, and Time Out New York (among many others), Stuyvesant Heights – and the larger working-class Community of Bedford that are commonly referred to as “Bedford-Stuyvesant” or “Bed-Stuy,” known worldwide for their magnificent architecture, rich history, green blocks, flourishing Community Gardens, and as home to countless significant cultural figures – are in the flowering of a new cultural and commercial renaissance (we have a growing collection of books discussing this history which we keep in each Apartment).
Bars, boutiques, cafés, galleries, restaurants, and shops are popping up faster than one can keep up with, and there is an influx of new residents who are turning this historically Black, family-oriented Community into a truly diverse enclave of progressive people of all backgrounds (for example, in the decade between 2000 and 2010, the white population surged 633%).
Despite this tremendous transformation, however, it maintains a charm that can be experienced by strolling down one of its many quiet, safe, leafy, beautiful blocks.
In addition to those activities listed above, our Community also hosts: Art Shows, Chess Tournaments, Farmer's Market, Garden Parties, Live Music, Outdoor Film Screenings, Parades, Poetry Readings, Street Festivals, Wine Tastings, and much more.
