Jim and I have owned the property since the late 70's. In 1999, we retired and moved to the WD Ranch full time. Jim is an artist who had his own school in Scottsdale. Mary worked for the Scottsdale School District for 17 years. Jim still teaches at the community college here in Payson, twice a week. He belongs to the Payson Art League and shows twice a year with them. He has his own studio on our property. We love to hike and watch the wildlife. We put in a garden every spring/summer. Love those fresh vegetables and share with our guests when available. We have a wonderful dog named Sage. She is deaf but it doesn't slow her down. She will be the first to greet you when you arrive!
The Owner purchased this cabin in 2000
We love Payson. It is a touch of paradise! Payson is a small town with many activities and events throughout the year! And, the people are the best! We love our area because it is secluded, quiet, and away from the city! Great place to relax and receive some R&R.
Staying at the WD Ranch is very quiet and secluded, but you are about 15 minutes from the Mataztal Casino, Sawmill Crossing Movie Theatre, Walmart, Safeway and Bashas. We are about 45 minutes from two beautiful lakes--Woods Canyon and Willow Springs. The fish hatchery and Horton Creek is beautiful to explore and that is about 45 - 50 minutes away.
We stayed here in August 2016, it's a really nice spot! Met one of the owners, Mary. They were going away for a few days she said, so we didn't get to know them as well as some of the other guests, but Mary was very nice. The way they have set up the cabin, you basically have everything you need there. We brought some food and cooked a lot of meals in the kitchen, which was well stocked. It even had a crockpot(we had brought our own not knowing), which we used to make chili one day. The cabin is not far off of the freeway coming into Payson, and a very short 10 minute drive to town. From there, you can venture off to many places. We took day trips each day to Pine and some of the lakes in the area, and afterwards, it was nice to come home to the peace and quiet the cabin had to offer and enjoy a home cooked meal. The kids enjoyed the tire swing in the front, as well as the loft area above. Very cool place! We will be coming back again, thanks so much!
Took my 7 year old daughter for a weekend getaway. Wanted a log cabin and this was everything and more. Felt safe but not cut off. It was very well equipped and the owners were on hand if needed. It was near everything we wanted to do but far enough away. Loved the hammock and the peace and quiet. There was no cell or internet signal for Virgin users but good to get away from that. I could get a small signal if I walked up the lane which made a nice evening stroll. Thank you Mary and Jim for everything, it was a pleasure to meet you and look forward to planning our next trip.
Me and some friends decided to stay at this cabin and it was honestly such a great trip! Mary and Jim are such kind people. We got there pretty late but it was really easy to find at night. The cabin is super cozy and comfortable. It has everything you need! Mary and Jim are very helpful and showed us around the garden and even Jim's art studio. He has beautiful art! They are very nice and welcoming people. The lettuce you gave us was delicious btw thank you! There's some hiking trails to walk up during the day, and we even went down the main road some more and saw a cow and fed it. Highly recommend this cabin, and were definantly coming back soon! :) thanks for such a great experience!
Very nice place to stay, off the beaten track, but not too far from the town! And Mary and Jim are wonderful hosts!
I wrote a review back in 2013 after my 5th time to the cabin, now I've been back a total of 12 times and will be going again in the summer. It's my "Happy Place". It's a great place to get away to to relax or to have fun with the family. Mary and Jim are two of the nicest people you'll ever meet.
We had a fantastic stay. Woke up to elk just outside the window. We cooked hot dogs outside over a fire even though there was a fully equipped kitchen and gas grill.
We are located in the pines, juniper trees and walnut trees. We have the Tonto National Forest on two sides of us!
