Condo, 2 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (sleeps 4)
We've traveled the world, but when we want to recharge our batteries, St. Croix is the most lay-back sunny retreat you could ever want. That's why we chose it 33 years ago and bought out lovely home away from home 31 years ago.
Owner purchased this Condo in 1987
Why Owner chose Estate Golden Rock
Thirty-three years ago, my wife and I wanted to get away for 'just a week' but we didn't want to chance a cold spell in Florida. And we didn't want to leave the safety of the USA. So we traveled to the USVI, St. Croix. Knowing nothing about our destination except it was in the United States Virgin Islands, we discovered a lifestyle change that has lasted and will continue to last for our entire life. We have a saying in St. Croix, when on island you are on St. Croix time: that's 180 seconds per minute. Nobody and nothing is done in a hurry. You will love it.
What makes this Condo unique
Why did we chose St. Croix for our home away from home after vacationing there two years in a row? The one overriding reason was the people. The friendliness of the people and the great weather, coupled with the pace of life on the island, slow and slower, make it the ideal get away spot. You MUST say hello or good morning/afternoon/evening to all the locals and everyone with whom you come in contact or pass on the street. It is considered very rude not to do this. When you do, you will be rewarded with a wide smile and friendly return of the greeting in almost every case. The local Crucian people are wonderful. I can't tell you how gracious and helpful they will be to you. When you drive on island, you will be amazed that everyone stops to let everyone else out of shopping malls, and side streets. Then you get a 'honk' to acknowledge your kindness. So don't forget to 'honk' when someone lets you into traffic or to turn in front of them. After over 31 years, it still amazes me. Because the restaurants are all very casual and our having a full size washer and dryer in the unit, you can often pack a carry-on with bathing suit and a few things for a weeklong stay or longer. We had a family of four adults (mom, dad, and two grown daughters) that did exactly that. Getting into and out of airports easily with no baggage fees or lost luggage is a pleasure.

Great condo, centrally located beautiful island!
A well equipped spacious condo, nice view on a lovely quiet island. Fantastic covered lanai where we spent most of our time. Near a good grocery store....St Croix is clean and the people are friendly..unlike some other Carribbean destinations. Also this is USA.! The owner is easily contacted is you have any problems..which we did not! Great pool area, never crowded! Go and enjoy!
Barbara, I am glad you enjoyed your visit to St. Croix and my condo.
If you choose to return in the future, I would be happy to give you a 10% discount.
One question, Any reason you gave a 4 star vs. a 5 star rating since you had all positive things to say?
Have a safe trip home, Lynda
Good Colony Cove unit
Colony Cove is in a great location on the island -- pretty handy to everything. The unit was clean and very well-equipped. The only major downside is that there is no door or privacy between the master bedroom and its en suite bathroom. The development's gas grills could use an upgrade -- they work, but not well.
We loved everything about this condo! Beautifully decorated, well stocked with everything we needed! We contributed to your sea glass collection and left the most perfect urchin shell we’ve ever found! Thank you so much for all your help, support and most of all sharing your beautiful place with us!
Great stay near the heart of the city
We got there just after 5 and the office had just closed. There was no security guard there so we had to wait for someone to open the gate for us. The phone numbers we had didnt work out there was a number on the office window that was good. We left before the office was open and didnt know what to do with the key. The condo was nice. It was close to town but not close enough to walk. Stores and restaurants were great.
Fantastic family vacation! Condo is beautiful, wonderful staff. Super easy rental process from start to finish. Only problem was not wanting to leave - we will definitely be back! Thank you for sharing your condo with us!
So glad you enjoyed your stay. If you would like to return, I can offer a discount.
How disappointed we were from the cleanliness, maintenance and the description the owners wrote on their unit. Upon our arrival at Colony Cove we buzzed the office at the gate only to have no response, the call button did not work according to the office. There was a phone number to call but we had no cell phone coverage. At first glance things seemed fine, only on further examination I noticed the vents in the bedrooms were filthy, there was filth between the head boards and bed frames. The paint was peeling on the ceiling, the louver openers were hard to turn, screws for louvers were lose or not attached to the window frame, there was what appeared to be mold in the bedroom window sill, the glass windows in the living room were covered with smudge prints showing they hadn't been cleaned, when I moved a chair in the living room to open the louvers, there was dust and hair on the floor and a thick coat of dust on the rung of the chair. There were ants on the floor in the bedroom ( I'd clean them up every day only form them to return daily). In the kitchen something would bite us on our legs, I rolled the rug up and removed the rug from the kitchen and the bites stopped. The kitchen did not have a can opener which made it challenging to prepare meals. The two coolers that were provided were useless, one the zipper was broken and the other was missing it's lid. The condominium was extremely hot and unbearable, not even the fans could cool the living room and kitchen down. The TV in the living room did not work. The owners were notified Friday morning when they called. I left a message for the owner on Saturday to inform them that the TV still didn't work and inquire about dishwasher soap, they did not return my call. The following Thursday a replacement TV was delivered. There were no cleaning supplies with the exception of a broom and dust pan, house keeping was not provided, When I inquired of the owner about laundry soap I was informed we were to supply our own. There was no dishwasher detergent supplied either. When I asked for toilet paper at the main office i was given one roll and I was informed I would have to supply my own since we were guests of the owner the only thing the office was required to do for us was check in and check out. Even tho I did my research this condominium was not a good fit and I feel was over priced for what was there.
We would not recommend Colony Cove or this unit to our friends.☹️
We take the condition of our unit very seriously. And we try to correct any and all correctable items reported.
Having said this, I only hope that any future potential renter will note that over 50 of 83 VRBO renters have taken the time to review our condo. And including this review, our unit has a 4.7 Star rating on a 5 Star system.
Though VRBO allows owners to rate the “travelers,” we never do this. We realize that we can’t please everyone all the time. We only ask future renters to look at the Big picture.
In the past 6 weeks, an electric power surge knocked out the big screen TV in the living room and one of the bedroom A/C units. Both were hard to replace on island as there were NO air conditioners at all and we had to wait for some to arrive by ship; and there was only one store on island that had the TV. We arranged to have someone find it and had it put in the unit as soon as could be done. No price shopping was available. And there were flat screen TV’s mounted on the walls in both bedrooms that worked fine.
So be advised that we will be evaluating every aspect of this review.
Our front desk attendant has been there for over five years. Unless there was a sub and she was off, she would never tell our renters they were “guests of the owners” and the only thing they had to do was “check them in and check them out.”
There are ceiling fans in all five rooms, a counter fan also in the kitchen, small fans on the bedroom dressers, and a large floor fan in the LR. Yes, there are times of the year when there is little or no breeze. But the fans handle it for most renters. When you called and complained that the fan on the kitchen counter vibrated, made a lot of noise and moved on the counter, I asked if you were not using the 2nd BR, could you trade fans with a smaller fan from the dresser. Or you could have just put a dish towel (there are at least 5 of them in the kitchen draw) under the kitchen counter fan.
The bedroom vents should not have been dirty, as we clean them at least 3-4 times a year and they don’t function, so they only have dust on them from being there not from air flow. They are about 3 inches from the ceiling and most renters don’t even notice them. Unfortunately, the “peeling paint” is the result of hurricane Maria. All the loose paint has been removed and it was not falling from the ceiling.
There are not a lot of good, reputable contractors on island and we had to wait for our contractor’s availability. The bedroom ceilings are being replaced as I type; new tile floors are being installed; and the BR’s will be repainted.
As to the Ants, it’s the Carribean, and we’ve been unable to train the ants to stay out. We have a monthly insect service. We can do no more. We’ve personally washed the rug in the kitchen every time we’re there, and the “small gnats” still bite your ankles with or without the rug there, clean or not. Sometime they are there, and sometime they aren’t. Many of the outdoor restaurants provide “Off” for your ankles. If you go to “Cheeseburgers in the American Paradise,” a great outdoor venue with entertainment, they have cans of “off”on every table.
In closing, we stand on the overall rating we have been given by the vast majority of our renters. This renter told us on one of the multiple phone calls during their stay (we provide a personal number to call us directly to all renters) that they had gone to St. Croix to look for a house. And they decided the island was not for them as it was dirty and not well run. For those of us that have been to many Carribean islands, St. Croix is one of the cleanest, well cared for island in the Carribean. If you want “Top Shelf” accommodations, you can find them, but you will pay at least twice the price and they won’t have trained the ants any better than we have.
If you rent, be aware that certain renters can’t be satisfied.
You rise almost every morning to a fabulous sunrise coming over the island from the east. You can drive (on the left) all over the island to enjoy magnificent beaches; snorkeling and scuba; night scuba diving at the pier in Fredericksted; sailing to and snorkeling at the only underwater national park in the US parks system, Buck Island; you can go on eco-hikes to natural mineral hot baths; at the right time of year, you can arrange to see the sea turtles nest at Sandy Point; you can fish and grille the catch at the pool; eat out at a plethora of great restaurants; play golf at the Robert Trent Jones, Sr. golf course or the Buccaneer with it's fabulous views; you can drive to Point Udall and stand on the furthest Eastern point of the United States of America; you can drive into the rain forest and visit the beer-drinking pigs; you can go into downtown Christiansted and shop at the duty free shops and the wonderful art galleries full of art from local and famous artists; you can take the Sea Plane from downtown Christiansted to Charlotte Amalie Harbor on St. Thomas and spend the day there, shopping and eating; or just plop-down by the pool or beach and soak in the warm Caribbean sun.
You get the best of all worlds at our condo. While being an Ocean Front Property with all the amenities of your home at your fingertips in a gated community, you are on an island in the Caribbean with all the fun and sun things to do; being in the United States, the USVI has all the 'comforts' of home, but you only need a US driver’s license or other valid i.d. not a passport to travel here. You can literally walk a few blocks to the main road to find grocery stores the same as a Giant or Kroger; McDonalds; Subway; KFC: Fitness Centers; etc.
As you will see from reading our VRBO reviews, we go to great lengths to make your stay at our condo an enjoyable one. Thank you for considering our 'home away from home' for your vacation destination. We hope to hear from you.
