Inspired by the architecture of Frank Lloyd Wright and designed and built by Lutsen architect Bruce Carmen, Grey Havens sits on 250 feet of private Lake Superior shoreline.
The house is furnished in mission style for a luxurious yet comfortable feel. Art scattered throughout the home, much of it by local artists, reflects the wilderness surrounding you. The open floor plan allows for cooking, dining and relaxing all with amazing Lake Superior views.
The main living area has a Carlton Peak rock fireplace and a 50' flat screen t.v. with both dvd and vcr players for evening movies. The stereo system includes a plug-in for your iPod. The home also has internet, so you can connect and even download movies if you have a Netflix account. Two comfortable swivel recliners in the bay window let you nap while being lulled by the waves crashing on the shore.
Up a spiral stairs and overlooking the living area is a loft full of books, dvd and vcr movies, and a couch. Up another spiral stairs and you arrive in the turret with spectacular views of the lake and a reflecting telescope. From there you step out onto the rooftop deck which is perfect for star-gazing and watching the Northern Lights.
Or maybe you prefer to wander down to the lake to skip stones on your own private beach or fish off the ledgerock shore. Hot dogs and s'mores at the waterfront fire pit creates fun and memories for all ages.
You can create your own gourmet meals in the fully equipped kitchen using the JennAire stove with grill and other amenities. Or grill outside on the Weber!
The master bedroom is a special retreat with two walls of windows for stunning lake views. The attached bathroom has its own soaking tub and separate shower.
The first guest bedroom reflects the voyageur heritage of the North Shore. It's attached bathroom has whimsical wall art of spruce trees, bringing the surrounding forest inside. The second guest bedroom focuses on the art of Bev Doolittle with her portrayals of the hidden denizens of the birch forests. In the attached bathroom look out the window to find the trees which posed for the birch wall paintings!
Grey Havens is only minutes from Lutsen Ski Resort, with downhill skiing, snowboarding, and in summer, the Alpine Slide. Even closer is the 27 hole Lutsen National Golf Course. Miles of cross country ski trails start just across the road. Hiking in the beautiful state parks along Highway 61 is spectacular whatever the season. Just 20 minutes to the East is Grand Marais, an artist colony and charming town full of shops and restaurants to keep you entertained whatever the weather.
Grey Havens was a harbor for the highest and most powerful of the Elves in Tolkien's story of the Middle Kingdom. It was from Grey Havens that the Elves set sail for other enchanted lands. A place of magic and beauty, Grey Havens was a refuge for the Fellowship of the Ring and is our refuge for the soul.

We are city dwellers who have always loved the outdoors. When our children were young, we went camping and traveled all over the country. Once they were grown and we had four granddaughters, we decided a place where we could all be together and celebrate family events was important. We now split our time between Minneapolis and Lutsen, so we get to enjoy the best of both worlds.
The Owner purchased this house in 1993
We fell in love with the North Shore the very first time we visited. After years of renting other people’s homes, we decided we wanted our own piece of paradise. We purchased 1.5 acres right on Lake Superior in Lutsen and built our home with local architect and builder Bruce Carman.
We love the many faces of the Lake, from smooth as glass to the powerful winter storms. The surrounding forest is full of wonderful birch and spruce trees not to mention the abundant wildlife -- deer, chipmunks, eagles, owls, and the occasional bear or wolf.
We are avid hikers and have been all over the wonderful state parks that line Highway 61. Trips into Canada to Fort William and Thunder Bay or up into the Boundary Waters at Ely always are adventures of discovery.
As well as hiking, we love to eat! When not making gourmet meals in our own kitchen, we have found numerous, sometimes hidden, restaurants serving everything from venison to burgers to four star cuisine.
As amateur astronomers, we built our house with a turret and rooftop deck. There is nothing more awe inspiring than lying on the deck looking at the Milky Way or finding the North Star or identifying constellations on a warm summer night. Or bundling up and watching the shimmering Northern Lights on a fall or winter evening.
There simply is no better place to relax and enjoy Nature in all her glory than our retreat on the North Shore.
Beautifully furnished, architecturally interesting, perfect for six people. We wer a group that likes to cook for ourselves, and we turned out some great dinners with the full kitchen. Enough space for a quiet afternoon of reading on a rainy day for all six of us. Convenient to all the hiking and canoeing we wanted to do, quick access to Lutsen store. I'll be back.
We have stayed at Grey Havens twice in the past few years and were delighted by the accommodations, views, COMPLETE privacy, wonderful beach area, and all the great nooks and crannies of this house on both visits! The owners are wonderful and easy to work with and everything you need to know is spelled out in the agreement. Like a previous reviewer, I too am have rented numerous VRBOs and I have to say this one is as good or BETTER than the others. Cleanliness of the home was not an issue at all. And, on our second trip we were surprised to find WiFi and cell phone service at the house! I can't recommend this property enough. It's the perfect North Shore get away!
We just spent an extra long weekend at Grey Havens celebrating our daughter's 15th birthday. The weather was hit & miss. Rained at night, foggy during the day, but you can't control that. Many games were played indoors. We went fishing & rock scouting down on the beach. Had a trip into Grand Marais where we dined at Angry Trout. Too wet for hiking, but we had an excellent trip anyway!
This review is being submitted by four seasoned VRBO users. All of us frequently use
the website for vacation rentals and highly depend on the opinions of the property
Let us begin by saying the views from this property are spectacular! The pictures on the
website accurately portray the inside and outside of the home. It is well located
geographically; a short drive to Lutsen (for dining and skiing) and Grand Marais. You
will de?nitely hear road noise as it is close to Hwy 61.
However, compared to the dozens of VRBOs we have all rented, we were collectively
very disappointed in the cleanliness of the home itself and took pictures to send to the
owner, whose response was equally disappointing and defensive. This would not have
been a 1/2 hour job or covered by a “once over” by any of our standards and none of us
felt like putting up with a cleaning crew when one couple had driven 6 hours to get
there. Be aware that “television” (listed as an amenity) means you can watch a DVD,
no news or football games. There is no cable. Also, you have to bus your garbage
across the road and pay to have it disposed of before you leave or you will be ?ned.
There is no use of the washer/dryer and you are allowed one set of towels for 3 days.
Lastly, let me say that NONE of us have ever found it necessary to write a negative
review of the many properties we have rented. There are a lot of options on the North
Shore for $369/night; we recommend you look further.
This property is gorgeous inside and out and the privacy is amazing - both at the house and down at the lake - not a soul or structure in sight! Wonderful amenities! Owner was easy and polite for correspondence or questions. No washer/dryer and no cell service nor WiFi - but unplug and enjoy! Some highway noise from 61, but that's hard to get away from on the North Shore.... Overall, a very wonderful location and highly recommended for couples or families.
This is a beautiful property with an exceptional shoreline. Very private at the end of a road, the privacy is also exceptional inside as there are guest bedrooms and baths down a hallway quite separate from the master. You won't be bothered by the noise of night owls or early risers. Gorgeous views and the icing on the cake is the observatory complete with telescope for the astronomy lovers. Spacious and very well designed. If you are looking for privacy, beauty, and comfort it's there.
