It doesn’t get prettier than this. One of our guests, described Watauga Lake as Lake Geneva in the NorthEast corner of Tennesee. Our house sits atop of the mountains in Appalachia at 4500 feet. Because we are in the Cherokee National Forest, there are very few homes on the lake which makes the views prettier than normal. In addition, the lake gets warm early in the season. You can swim from April through late October. It is a short walk to the private marina and gazebo, where there is a private covered marina; Fish Springs will bring a rental boat to an open slip for you if you'd like or you can bring one yourself. In the winter, it is an amazing home located 20 miles from a handful of skiing mountains including Sugar, Beech, and Appalachian. Our home, completed in late November 2009, looks like something straight out of a movie with driftwood trees inside the house as well as indoor and outdoor water falls. You can be busy every minute, or simply sit by the water's edge and relax.

For us, Whispering Pines is a relaxing haven that gives us a chance to get away from it all. It sits atop a mountain so the views are spectacular! Stunningly beautiful Lake Watauga is at our doorstep. This house is clean and attractive inside and it has been outfitted in many thoughtful ways. It truly has all the amenities of home! We love eating outside on the deck under the roof, even on a rainy day. Our favorite outdoor spot? The in-the-ground campfire site with the benches surrounding it. Be sure to pack marshmallow, Hershey bars, and graham crackers in your suitcase! There is A/C and heat available at your finger tips, so no matter the weather, we are always comfortable. We will keep coming back to the Whispering Pines because it’s the perfect get-away (this was our 6th time :). We know that each visit will bring new and lasting memories. Thx so much Tom & Heidi for sharing your beautiful mountain home with us. --Jo & Frank Dirnbauer
Truly a great cabin to stay at and one that I would recommend to anyone. It's furnished and stocked just like somebody lived there themselves 24/7 with no details being left out. Beautiful and warm/comfortable on the inside and great views on the outside. My family and I had a great time and plan on making a return trip next year. It was spacious and up to date while retaining that authentic mountain feel that everyone is looking for. The owners were also friendly and easy to communicate with. A+ stay
Excellent property adjacent to one of the most beautiful, majestic lakes in the entire country.
Owner was very accomdating and provided precision directions to this remote property, and detailed description of the house proper and nearby amenities. The property is well cared for and clean. There was no trouble using the development marina...this was a huge plus for our group as we docked boat there for the entire stay.
Hints: arrive during daylight hours. Property is blissfully remote and you will need to follow owner provided instructions. You will want to enjoy the scenery anyway.
Last 100 yards of the driveway is steep...be prepared.
Beautiful home on the top of the mountain that easily accommodated 5 adults and 5 children. Hot tub, 2 kayaks, private marina to fish from and lots of fresh air and trees. Right around the corner from the marina is a rope swing that the young people loved. The home has everything you need and it is first class. I certainly would stay here again.
My best friend and I get our two families together every year for a summer adventure. This year we decided on Whispering Pines. This was our best trip yet!! The house was absolutely gorgeous, the photos on the website do not do this house justice. It was simply breathtaking!!! Every square inch of this home is immaculately decorated and no detail has been over looked.
Even though there are only three bedrooms we had more than enough space for 4 adults and 6 children. The owners smartly provided several air mattresses and there is a separate living room downstairs with a comfy queen pull out sofa that worked fantastic as a fourth bedroom. The house is so large, we never felt cramped. There was plenty of room for the kids and adults alike!!
The property surrounding the home is as gorgeous as the house itself. The stone fire pit, hot tub, spacious porches and beautiful landscaping added to the mountain relaxation. Not only are the grounds spectacular but the views of the surrounding mountains and gorgeous lake are unreal. We spent many hours just rocking on the porch and enjoying the wilderness.
The area is also a great spot for family adventure. After lazing in the lake we set out for adventure. There is a lovely swimming beach called Shook Branch about 15 mins from the house. We also ventured to Laurel Falls and the hike was dramatic but not overly strenuous. The falls were beautiful with a cold swimming hole. We also went to Off the Grid Mountain Adventures and did zip lining and ATV tours, within 30 mins from the house. Lastly we went white water rafting with Wahoo's. The rafting trip goes down the Watauga River and was extremely suitable for small children as the "rapids" we're not extreme at all.
Lastly, Tom was great answering all my questions and providing information to make our stay more enjoyable. He responded promptly every time and made our trip so easy and stress free!
There was truly something for everyone here. Our kids range in age from 8 to 17 and each one said it was their favorite trip so far!! I cannot recommend this property more highly!!
We were looking for a cabin as close to Watauga Lake as we could get. Whispering Pines was a great find and we know we will be back. Two families enjoyed this location and it was plenty of room. We love to cook and entertain so the main kitchen/living room area was perfect and you could also eat out on the back covered deck . Our kids are all older than 19 so using the kayaks that Tom provided, as well as paddle board and jet ski rentals from Off The Grid Adventures, made the trip fantastic. We also had family who could boat over to the dock and pick us up. The cabin itself is beautifully decorated and comes with cable tv and wifi (just in case you need some down time). We enjoyed the fire pit at night as well as the hot tub. Easy trips to Ashville NC and Boone. Grocery shopping in Elizabethton, as well as an incredible coffee and lunch at The Coffee Company are within 25 minutes just down the mountain. We missed The Pizza Inn, this trip( all you can eat)- next time for sure. We had a great time!! Thanks Tom for always being available too.
The cabin is absolutely beautiful. It is a fully stocked cabin (house) that is clearly treated as a second home and very comfortable with all amenities. The decorations are very unique to a mountain setting - beautiful waterfalls inside and out; can sit outside and enjoy the peacefulness of the wilderness or see the stars; a nice fire pit that we used just about every night; great time to relax, play games, and cook out. It is in close proximity to the lake where we swam frequently - even rented a boat! Lots of hiking nearby on the AT. We even went to the drive-in movie which was great fun especially since our kids had never experienced one! On the one day it rained, we drove to the Biltmore to take a tour. Tom was very prompt in answering any questions and providing information and recommendations about the surrounding area and restaurants. He couldn't have been any more hospitable and wanted us to enjoy the home as much as they do. It truly is a piece of paradise and one that we will return to in the future. Thank you Tom and Heidi for opening your retreat to us!
