Real Log Cabin with Beautiful Mountain Views of the 'Smoky Mountains'

Bedrooms 1
Property type cabin
Minimum Stay 2 - 5 nights

About the property

Cabin, Downstairs master Bedroom + Loft Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Very private 'real' log cabin on 28 acre mountain top shared with 5 other cabins. Sit on the covered front porch in one of the rocking chairs with a view of the 'Great Smoky Mountain National Park' in front of you. We are only 15 min. from Cades Cove and 3 miles from the entrance to the national park.

Our authentic log cabin has a combined living/dining space with large stone wood burning fireplace where you can enjoy cold winter nights in front of the crackling fire. This is also where you can watch cable TV or movies on the DVD player. There is a large loft overlooking this area where you will also find 2 double beds and a Fussball table. The downstairs master bedroom has a queen bed and large closet and dresser with the bathroom located just next to the master bedroom.

If you don’t want to pack a lot, we have a washer and dryer for your convenience. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything except food and all linens, towels and paper products are furnished. The porch wraps around 3 sides offering a front porch complete with rocking chairs and a beautiful mountain view, the side porch has complete privacy with lounge chairs for sunbathing and the large back deck has a hot tub and charcoal grill for a perfect evening out.

R & R Retreat is the last cabin on the mountain top and all the cabins are secluded. You are just a short drive from the shopping in Pigeon Forge, Dollywood or the sights of Gatlinburg without the crowds or neighbors at night. Several good resturants are within a mile or two if you choose not to dine in. You are within 2 miles of great tubbing, fishing, hiking, biking trail, swimming in the 'Little River' and horseback riding.

The Townsend community is what Pigeon Forge was 35 years ago, uncrowded, quiet and peaceful.

About Tommy Rutherford

We were born and raised in East Tennessee and have traveled a lot of the world, but we have to say that these old Appalachian Mountains are as beautiful as any we've been. It's hard to beat the peace, quiet and nature of the quiet side of the Smokies in Townsend.

Tommy Rutherford purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Tommy Rutherford chose Tennessee

Our family has been coming to the Smoky Mountains since the 1950's and have always enjoyed the unspoiled nature of the Smoky Mountains. There are 4 distinct seasons with mild winters and lots of outdoor activities year 'round. The area history and culture is very interesting and if you're a nature lover, you'll be in heaven. We are blessed with an abundance of wild critters that roam the woods and the lakes and rivers are full of fish. The valley is three miles long with the Little River flowing through offering tubing in the summer. The river is stocked with trout for some great fishing and you can even put your own kayak in and float the Little River. There are plenty of trails for every level of hiking or just a quiet walk in the woods. Some trails are even handicap accessible. It’s a great place to enjoy nature and the beauty of the area without the crowds in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, however, these towns are close enough to visit on day trips. Head to Galtinburg for shopping dining, Aquarium of the Smokies and skiing at Obergatlinburg in the winter. Pigeon Forge is home of Dollywood, lots of music theaters and other entertainment as well as great restaurants and outlet malls.

What makes this cabin unique

R&R Retreat is located on 28 acres with only 6 cabins including ours and no drive-by traffic, yet we are very close to the main highway and all the amenities in Townsend.Being at the end of the road, we offer complete privacy as we are situated on 2 heavily wooded acres.

Guests can roam the 28 acres and beyond, although there are no marked trails, the park has many trail heads nearby. Guests can bring or rent bicycles in town to ride the 3 mile long valley where there are paved bicycle paths on both sides of the road. Mother Nature at her finest is right here in the quiet side of the Smoky Mountains. You can go fishing, swimming and tubing the river, hiking and backpacking the trails of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, visit old homesteads and look for wild animals while touring Cades Cove and the park or just relax and breathe in the fresh mountain air. If you need a vacation, then this is place you want to be.

Whether you like it wild or mild, make your next vacation a stay at R&R Retreat and enjoy East Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our stay at your cabin was just wonderful! The cabin was so homey, cozy and comfortable. It was so relaxing! The deck and views were amazing! Loved the decor of your cabin, so rustic, and loved all the antiques. Like a step back in time with modern conveniences. Loved the area, Cades Cove, The Railroad Museum & Tuckaleechee Caverns. Say our first Black Bear at the entrance to Cades Cove. Say lots of Deer, Turkeys & Elk. Would definitley come back!!!

Relaxing Family Getaway

  • 4 of 5

We loved our stay in Townsend. We were happy to be on the quiet side of the park, away from the busy, touristy Gatlinburg. The cabin was just minutes from the Cades Cove entrance to the park as well as a grocery store and tasty restaurants. The views from the deck and hot tub were amazing. We had no problems with the shower or the beds, as another guest had mentioned. We were comfortable and relaxed here.

The cabin needs some attention; we would not stay here again.

  • 2 of 5

We chose this cabin due to it's location and price. Both of those go in the "pro" column for this cabin. It was near the points of interest we visited (Blackberry Farm, Cade's Cove, Tremont, Dancing Bear Bistro) and was very affordable.

Let me first make clear-- we did not expect a 5-star cabin. We were in the area for a reservation at a very extravagant restaurant and liked the idea of saving money by choosing a rustic, simple cabin. We were very realistic and knew that the cabin was outdated, per the pictures online, and that the amenities were basic. However, we DID expect the cabin to be as advertised and to be in working order.

Instead, what we found was a rather neglected property. I want to share constructive criticism but I don't want to bash it so I will highlight the most important issues:

1. The queen size bed is the most uncomfortable bed I've ever experienced. I am now sleep-deprived. We travel often and I never complain about bed comfort. A real mattress pad (not that paper thin cover that's currently on there) would likely help..

2. The fireplace does not work; the chimney does not draw smoke. We know how to operate a fireplace and ensured damper was open. We even brought our own wood, but it was impossible to have a fire without filling the cabin with smoke. It needs the attention of a chimney sweep.

3. The hot tub was filthy. I have pics and am willing to share if desired.

4. Showering here is bad. It was difficult to even wet your body, much less hair. A new showerhead would work wonders.

5. There had been some cleaning following the last guest (countertops were clean, carpet vacuumed, fresh linens, etc.), however the place needs a thorough top-to-bottom cleaning. There were crumbs and dust in the kitchen drawers, garbage can dirty, mini blinds filthy. I found evidence of other guests (the cap to a razor, some chapstick, a full tea kettle sitting on the stove).

There were other issues like: the dangerous entrance (a combination of loose gravel and uneven, slick steps), being prompted to tip housekeeping despite already paying cleaning fee, the fact the ductwork to the vent in the bathroom is completely detached- instead of receiving heat, you see buckets that are in the ground-level storage area, uncomfortable LR furniture, lack of reading lights... However, had the issues numbered 1-5 not been a problem, we would have been happy with the rental.

Owner's Response: I am very sorry you were not happy. A call to me while you were there would have been greatly appreciated, but no one called. I had ever emailed to before your arrival saying to call f you had any problems. 1. Mattress is from Sams Club and is less that 3 years old, my not be what you are used to sleeping on. That is a mattress cover to protect the mattress , not a mattress pad. 2. Fireplace has worked all winter and is sweep every fall before the season starts. 3 & 5. Cleaners take care of hot tub and interior of the cabin. They leave contact information in the cabin for problems and emergency service. They did not get a call to come take care of any of the problems. 4. The cabin is on a well as stated in the cabin information, it does not have high water pressure, sorry. Wish you had called and we could have taken care of the problems or offered other options.

R&R quick get a way

  • 4 of 5

Great cabin with everything we needed. Even had a bear turn over the trash bin just after our late time getting there. Not a problem for me at all. Glad to be on the quite side of the Smokey's close to Cades Cove where we saw deer and another bear. Did not get to see the one at the cabin but heard it out in the brush. Good stay!
