Overview

About the property

Cabin, Downstairs master Bedroom + Loft Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 6)

Very private 'real' log cabin on 28 acre mountain top shared with 5 other cabins. Sit on the covered front porch in one of the rocking chairs with a view of the 'Great Smoky Mountain National Park' in front of you. We are only 15 min. from Cades Cove and 3 miles from the entrance to the national park.

Our authentic log cabin has a combined living/dining space with large stone wood-burning fireplace where you can enjoy cold winter nights in front of the crackling fire. This is also where you can watch cable TV or movies on the DVD player. There is a large loft bedroom overlooking living/dining room with 2 double beds and a recliner. The downstairs master bedroom has a queen bed and large closet and dresser with the bathroom located just next to the master bedroom.

If you don’t want to pack a lot, we have a washer and dryer for your convenience. The kitchen is fully equipped with everything except food. All linens, towels and paper products are furnished. The porch wraps around 3 sides offering a front porch complete with rocking chairs and a beautiful mountain view, the side porch has complete privacy with lounge chairs for sunbathing and the large back deck has a hot tub and charcoal grill for a perfect evening out.

Rainwater Retreat is the last cabin on the driveway so there is no drive by traffic allowing complete privacy. You are just a short drive from the shopping in Pigeon Forge, Dollywood or the sights of Gatlinburg without the crowds or neighbors at night. Several good resturants are within a mile or two if you choose to dine out. You are within 2 miles of great tubbing, fishing, hiking, biking trail, swimming in the 'Little River' and horseback riding.

The Townsend community is what Pigeon Forge was 35 years ago, uncrowded, quiet and peaceful.

About Tommy Rutherford

My wife was born and raised in East Tennessee. We have traveled a lot of the world, but we have to say that these old Appalachian Mountains are as beautiful as any we've been. It's hard to beat the serenity, beauty and nature of the quiet side of the Smokies in Townsend.

Tommy Rutherford purchased this cabin in 2001

Why Tommy Rutherford chose Townsend

My wife's family has been coming to the Smoky Mountains since the 1950's and have always enjoyed the unspoiled nature of the Smoky Mountains. This is why, when this property became available, we decided to purchase it . We love having the opportunity to share our beautiful Smoky mountain cabin with others so they can enjoy this unique area of East Tennessee. With 4 distinct seasons including our colorful fall leaf season and mild winters, you can enjoy lots of outdoor activities year 'round. The area history and culture is very interesting and if you're a nature lover, you'll be in heaven. We are blessed with an abundance of wild critters that roam the woods and the lakes and rivers are full of fish. The valley is three miles long with the Little River flowing through offering tubing in the summer. The river is stocked with trout for some great fishing and you can even put your own kayak in and float the Little River. There are plenty of trails for every level of hiking or just a quiet walk in the woods. Some trails are even handicap accessible. The 3 mile long valley is paved on both sides of the highway making a perfect place for biking, jogging or just strolling. This is the perfect place to enjoy nature and the beauty of the area without the crowds in Gatlinburg and Pigeon Forge, however, these towns are close enough to visit on day trips. Head to Galtinburg for shopping, dining, Aquarium of the Smokies and skiing at Obergatlinburg in the winter. Pigeon Forge is the home of Dollywood, lots of music theaters and other entertainment as well as great restaurants and outlet malls.

What makes this cabin unique

R&R Retreat is located on 28 acres with only 6 cabins including ours and no drive-by traffic, yet we are very close to the main highway and all the amenities in Townsend. Being at the end of the road, we offer complete privacy as we are situated on 2 heavily wooded acres.

Guests can roam the 28 acres and beyond, although there are no marked trails, the park has many trail heads nearby. Guests can bring or rent bicycles to ride the 3 mile long paved bike trail. Mother Nature at her finest is right here in the quiet side of the Smoky Mountains. You can go fishing, swimming and tubing the river, hiking and backpacking the trails of the Great Smoky Mountain National Park, visit old homesteads and look for wild animals while touring Cades Cove and the park or just relax and breathe in the fresh mountain air. Our favorite things to do are relax on the front porch with morning coffee or an afternoon refreshment and relax in the hot tub. In the winter, relaxing by the big wood burning fireplace is indescribably wonderful. If you need a vacation, then this is place you want to be.

Whether you like it wild or mild, make your next vacation a stay at Rainwater Retreat and enjoy East Tennessee and the Great Smoky Mountains.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Our stay at your cabin was just wonderful! The cabin was so homey, cozy and comfortable. It was so relaxing! The deck and views were amazing! Loved the decor of your cabin, so rustic, and loved all the antiques. Like a step back in time with modern conveniences. Loved the area, Cades Cove, The Railroad Museum & Tuckaleechee Caverns. Say our first Black Bear at the entrance to Cades Cove. Say lots of Deer, Turkeys & Elk. Would definitley come back!!!

Cozy and Comfortable

  • 5 of 5

The property was perfectly situated close enough to town, but also very private. Everything was very clean and we had all the amenities of home, including a washer and dryer. The hot tub was nice, and the views from the front porch were spectacular! We enjoyed our stay and will definitely be back.

Cute, rustic cabin in the woods

  • 4 of 5

For the money, this was a great deal. The place is cute and clean, however, it needs some updating, but, that would most likely make the price go up. Everything we needed was provided. Great location to town, restaurants and Cades Cove. Had a great time.

Owner's Response: I agree, I have put off updating and price increase as long as I can. I have had a lot of comments about carpet and bathroom. Those plus some other things will happen this winter. Along with the improvements will be a price increase. Hate to have to do it , but new stuff, a 40% increase in insurance, higher TV & internet, increase in utilities and many other services will demand an increase in my rate: Thank you for the kind review. Tommy

Anniversary get away

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I was needing some R and R from all the work frustration and responsibilities of life . The cabin was the perfect place. Very quiet and peaceful. The scenery was awsome. We was hoping all leaves would be changed but only some had but it was still beautiful. Maybe next visit we will try a little later in season. It was our 14th anniversary and we wanted to get away. We would defiantly choose this cabin again. Very homey. Loved the fire place and spent alot of time on the porches watching squirrels play. Only one thing is my husband suggest getting ESPN on the Tv but he did survive missing one Alabama game. Thanks again for a great stay.

Great cabin for the price

  • 3 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay and would stay again! The cabin was well built and sturdy. There were some things that could be improved like a bunch of light bulbs burnt out or missing. All the faucets dripped. The upstairs carpet was vintage 70's and the upstairs beds weren't the best. Downstairs furniture and bed was great!

The driveway was not scary and was well maintained. Our very low 370Z didn't have any trouble.

The hot tub worked very well heated to 104 with the cover on and jets worked great, there was some mineral stains in the hot tub but it was clean and very private.

The mountain view was great but from the front porch there was road noise. The fireplace worked very well. It was comfy cozy and fun.

Owner's Response: Thank you for the review. First time I have heard about light bulbs and faucets. We have talked about replacing all the flooring but will need to raise our rates and have chosen to clean as long as it looks good. The stains in the hot tub are because of minerals from the well. Only way to fix that is remove the hot tub.

Great Time

  • 4 of 5

We loved the mountains and the cabin. The cabin was in a great location with a great view of the mountains. Perfect size for our family and had all the amenities of home. We even had a surprise visitor try to get the trash cans on our last night. We had a great time. Thank you.
