After Georgetown to the west, Capitol Hill is Washington's oldest neighborhood. In its earliest days, most of the residents were members of Congress who lived in boarding houses and dormitories surrounding the Capitol. As the neighborhood evolved, row houses replaced boarding houses and the Hill began to grow as a neighborhood filled with families, as well as Washington's who's who. As you walk around this stately neighborhood, don't be surprised if you see faces you've seen in the news. A number of senators and representatives make their home on the Hill.
In addition to the U.S. Capitol, the Hill includes other significant American landmarks such as the U.S. Supreme Court, the Library of Congress, the Folger Shakespeare Library, Union Station, the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks, the Washington Naval Yard, Congressional Cemetery, Lincoln Park, and the Eastern Market. All of these sights are within easy walking distance and most are Metro-accessible. Just down the hill from the Capitol is the National Mall with all of the monuments and memorials iconic to Washington, as well as more than 10 museums and galleries of art and artifacts.
To the east of the Capitol is the Eastern Market—one of the only remaining merchant markets left in Washington. While the market bustles during the week, it is on the weekends that it acquires its character and charm as residents from all over the city and visitors from all over the world come to the market to enjoy breakfast; purchase fresh meats, produce, and breads; stroll through the adjacent flea market; and browse the latest art and jewelry crafted by local artists and artisans.
During the spring and summer months, a visit to the U.S. Marine Corps Barracks at 8th and I Streets SE will allow you to see the Marine Corps Silent Drill Team in action. This 24-man rifle platoon performs precision maneuvers with their 10.5 lb M-1 Garand rifles with fixed bayonets.
Over at the U.S. Capitol, the newly opened visitor's center allows visitors to experience the Capitol from the ground up. The center features several state statues in Emancipation Hall and a museum that chronicles the history of the U.S. Capitol from its cornerstone laying in 1789 by George Washington to the present day. Tickets for the Senate and House galleries are available here.
The Library of Congress' Jefferson Building, just across the street from the Capitol, is the world's largest repository of books and media in the world. The building is open to the public and the Renaissance and classical art are breathtaking.
These and other sites make staying on Capitol Hill a must if you're visiting Washington on business or for pleasure.

We have 2 daughters who are grown and are on their own ( not really, if you are a parent you know) and a 14 pound Schnoodle ( he thinks he is a giant). We have been living in the DC metro area for about 36 years and absolutely love it. Washington DC is a beautiful city, it really is and for people coming here to spend their vacations or attend conferences, weddings, funerals (The Arlington Cemetery), graduations, sight seeing, festivals etc. etc. there isn't any city that offers so much.
I manage the properties and Ana tells me what to do (!!!) We are a great team and enjoy doing what we do.

We stayed for a long weekend in this apartment as a group of four adults (two couples). Whilst not large, the apartment is very well equipped and was perfectly large enough for us. The apartment was very clean and the kitchen was very well equipped.
The location is excellent - a couple of blocks from a Harris Teeter supermarket and Potomac Avenue metro station (which is a couple of stops from the Capitol).
Overall I'd highly recommend this apartment and - if available - would happily stay there again in a future visit to Washington.
Our family of four stayed a week in this apartment and we give it a thumbs up for convenience and furnishings that made our stay so accommodating. You walk out the front door and just a half a block will get you to a bus stop and the Potomac Metro station is just a block away. Having this made our travel each day so convenient. We made several trips to the Harris Teeter grocery store which is just right around the corner. We would buy food to make our dinner each evening and this turned out to be a big plus since we have two hungry teenage boys to feed. It was less expensive overall for the week. We would eat out during the day -which was expensive-and then go to the apartment for a relaxing dinner. We drove to DC and having a parking space behind the apt. with a locked gate made the trip less worrisome. The owner Allan was always available for questions. The place was clean, had the amenities stated and was again convenient. Compared to hotel prices outside DC, this was lower in price and so worth it!
My grandsons and I used this basement apartment as our home base for a recent trip to Washington, DC. The apartment is well appointed for having meals and relaxing at the end of a busy day. While the bedroom and bathroom are quite small, they provided what we needed -- a safe, comfortable bed and a warm shower!
Allen was very responsive and returned all emails and texts. The condo was clean and well equipped. While the inside of the condo was very nice, the outside could have used some TLC. We had to sweep and hose down the back patio in order to sit outside.

This is a basement apartment. Does have windows, but small ones. You walk down into a landing below the main entry porch. The room itself was clean but certainly not Ritz level spotless. Everything worked. AC and heat good once you figure out thermostat. Not humid or mildewed (there was also a dehumidifier in the kitchen, not turned on). Bed was okay, but low end linen. Towels had bleach stains. Bathroom is small and kind of student apartment-like. Adequate appliances that worked. Futon that is not very comfortable as a sofa. The cords from the TV are in a tangle behind, which happens to be open in the dining area. A bit unsightly, but more important, easy to kick, which was why our TV didn't work until I realized the input to cable box was pulled out. Internet a bit slow but worked okay for my purposes. We opted for the off street parking - in the back yard. All fenced in and narrow (share one side with garbage cans), but the fence locks and car seemed secure. Some litter on the back steps and in yard. There is a project across the street but it seemed tidy and non-threatening. Easy to get to metro and grocery. Restaurants a few blocks away, no problem if you can walk a ways. Two things I didn't like- they expect you to put the garbage and recycling bins out on the street/alley but the instructions are not clear on when they are picked up (instruction reads "if you are there on Thursday" but doesn't say if that is put out night or pick up day). They charge a substantial cleaning fee, but the instructions require you to wash and dry your own towels before leaving. More than annoying, especially if you need to leave early in the AM.
