Why Joe Brandon chose Spanish Wells
A long time friend invited me and my family to stay at his beach house in Spanish Wells. We went in April, 2010 and had a wonderful time snorkeling, fishing, beachcombing, building sand castles, riding bikes, watching the sunset, having ice cream, grilling what we caught spear fishing and relaxing. It was incredible and my kids still tell others that it was the BEST vacation ever. I've challenged them on their declaration but they say the trip to Spanish Wells was better than the Atlantis, Disney World, Caribbean Cruises and all of our beach trips on the east coast. I know it's hard to believe but it's the truth! As a family we were not in a rush to get to nor distracted by any of the commercial offerings that are typical of vacation destinations. Spanish Wells is not commercialized at all; rather it is beautiful, safe, and the islanders are very accommodating. I too enjoyed this vacation immensely so I spent the last day of our vacation looking at real estate. When my friend learned that I was interested in buying a place on the island he offered me part ownership of the beach house. We have closed the deal and are now offering a limited number of rentals to help offset expenses.

Fantastic Family Vacation
We had a fabulous stay at Joe's place-all nine of us. The location could not have been better-just a stone's throw from the beach. We had the pleasure of meeting Joe and two of his adorable kids. They were gracious enough to show us around and take us out on their boat: sight- seeing, swimming, and fishing. We cannot thank you enough, Joe! Driving around the island on the golf cart was no only fun but such a unique experience. Beach combing, swimming, jumping off the bridge, talking with the locals, and just spending time with family made this the best vacation we have had to date. We highly recommend Joe's charming cottage at Palm 22! Many blessing to you, Joe, Annie, and David!
A great house on a great beach
This house is really well-loved in all the best ways, and has so many nice touches to make your stay comfortable and fun. The check-in process was really smooth, the boat charter was awesome, the guy eventually answered his phone to swap out our 5 gallon filtered water jugs... everything has been thought of and provided for. We just wished the beautiful turquoise water was a bit warmer!
I can't say enough good things about this property! The house is beautiful, comfortable, roomy, and in the perfect location. The owner and property manager are extremely easy to work with. Mr. John and Mrs. Nancy set up our transportation from the airport to the dock and met us at the dock with the golf cart we had reserved. It was a really easy process. Side note: Mrs. Nancy creates handmade jewelry in case you are looking for souvenirs;) The view from the house is breath taking. Seriously. The house has boogie boards, beach chairs, and floaties there. There is also plenty of towels available, so don't waste precious suitcase space with those. It is an incredibly safe island. I was with two other women and we always felt very safe. The sea life is unbeatable. We went out on a charter boat with Underwood Charters *HIGHLY RECOMMEND* (Bruno) and saw sharks, stingrays, dolphins, sea turtles, the pigs, huge starfish, the pink sand beaches on Harbour Island, snorkeled and went to Preachers Cave. It was THE BEST DAY EVER! Definitely worth the money. We ate at Wreckers, the Sandbar (you have to get the cajun pasta!), the Shipyard (the mac and cheese was amazing), the Eagles Nest (or Landing?) [the pizza was great], and Buddas. If you want to watch a football game, definitely go to Buddas. Plus the parrot will whistle at you and make you feel better about yourself, lol! You also have to jump off of the bride to Russell Island! You will regret it if you don't! The beach at the end of the island is amazingly beautiful too. This was the most relaxing vacation I have ever had. You NEED to go to Spanish Wells! It is truly paradise. I will be back!
I put a lot of weight into these reviews when I'm searching for a property, so I'll try to cover as much as I can. This was our first time to Spanish Wells and it by far was our favorite Carribean spot. The local people were SO friendly, the beach was perfect with shallow water to play in and sand bars that were exposed with low tides, and there wasn't a soul on the beach so there was no one trying to sell you things or bother you. It was so fun to find marine life right outside the house, including a tiny squid, conch galore, sea slugs, sand dollars, crabs, and starfish.
From the start, Joe was so helpful and quick to communicate with me in setting up our trip. When going to a new place it can be intimidating, but I felt well cared for and like everything was set up ahead of time, which I appreciated (like getting from airport to taxi to ferry to house being all taken care of in advance). The house gave plenty of room for our family of 5 (kids are 8, 5, and 3) and the kids loved playing on the swing and cargo net ladder and loft. The grocery store being so close was amazing (everything is close when the island is only 2 miles long).
Joe also set us up with a great fishing trip with Bruno. We loved going to Papa Scoops multiple times and had an amazing dinner at Shipyard. At the house, the outdoor shower with hot water is SUCH a great idea and a must have to rinse sandy/salty kids off. The house was very clean as well. There was a new deck put on just before we came which was great, unfortunately they didn't have time to replace the sliding porch door and the door was so stuck none of my kids were able to open it themselves (I could barely open it) so we had to keep letting them in and out. The only other issue was that 1 of the toilets started leaking while we were there (was supposed to be fixed after we left) and another toilet was very finicky, so we were down to just 1 out of 3 toilets that worked. The only other minor issue I would mention is that it says there are 3 showers but only 1 shower could be used comfortably by an adult. (1 shower is just a tub with a hand attachment and 1 shower has the shower head come out at about 4 1/2 feet). Both of these things were so minor though, that it wouldn't dissuade me from going back.
We will definitely be back to Spanish Wells, there is no doubt about that!
Gretchen - thank you for the kind words and positive review. My caretaker (Johnny) and I understand family vacation time is precious so we do as much as we can to ensure our guests have a great time. I'm glad your kids enjoyed the cottage, beach and simple pleasures of Spanish Wells. (i.e. Pappa Scoops, discovering marine life, outdoor shower etc.) My kids love Spanish Wells and their interest in the island has only increased over the last tens years of visiting. I'm sorry for the inconvenience the toilets and sliding glass door caused. The toilet issues have been resolved and the new sliding glass door will be replaced this month. I look forward to your return - we really value and appreciate our returning guests!
Sincerely, Joe B
25th Anniversary & Family Vacation
We have spent the last 30 years in many remote areas of the Bahamas. Even before the internet and cell phones, we sought out ways to completely escape. We love to get our kids off the grid (and now grandkids too) and Spanish Wells did not disappoint. Palm22 has a great "yard" for baseball, embraced by lush greenery and palms that spills to an outfield of a turquoise sea. We enjoyed 10 days of good, old-fashioned family fun and perfect weather. The home is well equipped - one of the best we have found in the remote islands. Nice bed linens and tons of beach towels. The floor plan is great for families/extended families and little ones - the lot was flat from the back deck all the way to the beach. The upstairs balcony provides an amazing view out over the ocean. The home has great rustic charm - was clean and well maintained. We would definitely make this top of our list for the next stay at Spanish Wells.
Don't wait - book it now!
If you don't read any other review, read this one. I, like you, spent HOURS scouring these reviews. I know how important they are!
The weather during our stay was..... interesting. Hurricane Dorian had just gone through the week before, but missed Spanish Wells. Another hurricane nearby caused the sea to 'rage' from sustained 20-40 mph winds for days on end while we were there. All activities we had planned (excursions to go snorkeling, see the sea turtles, etc) had to be cancelled for safety. Even our trip over to see the sights on Eleuthera was cancelled because they closed the Glass Window Bridge due to dangerous waves! It rained, and rained, and rained....
Sounds like a bit of a vacation bust, right? WRONG.
Our family probably spent more time at Palm 22 than most - simply because we really didn't have anything else to do! Despite all of the things that went 'wrong', this house and this island made this the best vacation we've ever had.
The property can comfortably fit a very large family. The location is stunning. You are literally steps from the water. We spent hours beachcombing (hey, the 'raging' ocean actually gave us some amazing shell finds!). Coming back 'home' was so relaxing. Sitting on the deck and listening to the ocean was incredible. Our rainy days were spent just relaxing and enjoying each other's company in this amazing house. The island has everything you need and more, and yet you still feel like the beach and the ocean belong to you alone! The Wifi worked well (silly, I suppose, but important). Bottom line, this house had everything we needed.
The booking process was impeccable. The caretakers, Nancy and Johnny, were responsive and kind. They were never more than a quick message away if we needed anything. We rented a golf cart from them, and had so much fun zipping around the island.
Don't even hesitate - book this property. You will love it. We're planning our return trip ASAP, and I can only hope this house is available. Thank you so much for reading, and I absolutely know you will love Spanish Wells and Palm 22.
