Lake Oscawana Lakefront House

Bedrooms 3
Property type house
Minimum Stay 7 nights

About the property

House, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Lake Oscawana surrounds three sides of the Rock the House stands on. The freshewater lake is 2.5 miles long, stream- and spring-fed, hidden in the Hudson Highlands. This unique site ensures privacy, perfect views and immediate access to the lakeshore.

Built in the Roaring Twenties as a summer retreat. Bringing the house into the 21st century, we maintained its original simple camp feeling but with all modern amenities. Guided by our architect and a local contractor, a hand-picked team installed modern plumbing, central heating, central air conditioning and a custom kitchen. Three bedrooms offer a king-size and two queen-size beds, the master bedroom opens directly onto the full-length screened porch. From the parking area below, the House on the Rock may be accessed by either of the two sets of steps in the photos.

Tucked away in the hills of the Hudson Highlands, near the Fahnestock State Park section of the Applachian Trail, Lake Oscawana is quiet and secluded. Watch the sunset from the porch, then settle down to sleep in the cool, the quiet, the freshness of the lake air that are a spa treatment straight from nature herself.

In the morning, have coffee or breakfast in the great room or on the porch, watching the wild birds at the feeder while deciding whether to swim, canoe or row from the foot of the rock to explore the lake or to sunbathe on the raft moored below the rock. Have you seen Goose Rocks? Have you found Lost River?

When you decide to venture away from the lake, you will find that it lies un-noticed at the center of an enormous variety of activities, including antiquing, art shows, art museums, concerts, historic houses, State Parks, summer theatre, West Point, - all this and New York City is still just an hour away. A few examples are: the Applachian trail, Boscobel Restoration, Caramoor, Cold Spring, and DIA Beacon.

Finally, numerous major retailers, supermarkets and Jefferson Valley Mall are only 15 minutes away (and yet a world away), ensuring that gathering necessities is a simple affair.

Why Julia & Douglas Young chose Putnam Valley

It's so close to everything but so hidden away that you can be as active or as relaxed as the moment takes you at any time.

One reason for Lake Oscawana's quiet and seclusion is that no through road passes it and the nearest roads only give occasional glimpses.

What makes this house unique

Our family built The House on the Rock in the late 1920's as a summer cabin and we've loved it ever since. With the new millennium, we wanted modern amenities but dreaded losing the feel of the great Adirondack camps. A series of happy chances led us to an architect whose personal passion was restorations, and a local contractor with a hand-picked crew. The whole team, we felt, fell under the spell of the lake, the site and the house. Together, they transformed the House on the Rock, keeping the 'feel' with stained woods, custom cherry cabinets and craftsmanship but giving it the ease and comfort of central heating and air-conditioning, a modern kitchen and bathrooms.

3 stars only because of location and view of lake, otherwise only 2 stars. Cottage was OK, but living room too small for 6 people in 3 small bedrooms. Bedrooms were very dirty, with tons of cob webs and spider webs under the beds and TV stands. 2nd Bath drain did not work, so tub could not be use. 4 people now had to use small master bath with shower only.

Access to lake not useable because of slimy steps and debris and geese poo and house having been built on a rock. You have to go down a flight of stairs first and then around the house on over-grown grass path. Patio full of black mold moss and outdoor chairs covered in bird poo, which we had to clean first before using. Cannot walk barefoot outdoors. All kitchen pots and pans greasy, and lets not talk about the coffee pot. No TV in living room. Porch has only screens in half of the space, windows could not be opened in the other half, where the dining table was located. It was a sauna there, and could not be used. Not even a shade to block the sun. The price included a high cleaning fee, but we did a lot of cleaning ourselves. All in all, not a good rental. This is my first bad review in at least 12 years of renting houses.

Lovely Time at the Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I had a wonderful time staying at the The House on the Rock. The cottage was beautiful and so clean. We spent quite a bit of time on the the wrap-around porch with gorgeous views of the lake. Our stay was relaxing and quiet - a welcome break from our hectic lives - exactly what we needed!

Gorgeous spot right on the lake.. Very comfy house

  • 5 of 5

A terrific property right on the playground and swimming access only about 100 feet away. Great views from the porch and house. Also, there is AC .. Very important if you arrive in a hot and muggy spell. Shopping about 15 mins away.. A bit complicated at first, but it becomes routine..

Only suggestions : new microwave needed as well as BBQ. we'd definitely rent it again.

Excellent getaway

  • 5 of 5

What an idyllic location! The sunrises, the sunsets across the lake, the quiet, it was perfect for much-needed R&R.

The house was per the description and photos and was comfortably prepared for us, complete with towels and all basic necessities (and then some - sugar for the coffee was appreciated!)

We were able to swim, to do day-trips, and the location is convenient for any shopping required as well.

As a previous reviewer noted, the house is not accessible if you can't climb stairs - not an issue for us, but should be considered for anyone with accessibility issues.

A Massage For The Soul

  • 5 of 5

I can't begin to say enough about our experience at the House On The Rock. We arrived exhausted from a 1,800 mile drive and felt immediately uplifted and refreshed by the scenery, the landscaping, and the home itself. The owners' warmth and obvious desire to share the delights of the area with their guests made us feel like family being welcomed home. We had a busy (some would say hectic) schedule of events surrounding a graduation. If we had not had this beautiful place as a home base I'm quite sure that I would have felt cheated of a vacation. But the peace and rustic beauty of the house more than made up for any rushing around that we had to do. There were six of us staying in the house but each one of us had our own spot to sip coffee and prepare for the day: at the dining table, on one and the other end of the long porch overlooking the lake, perched on the formidable rock on which the house is built, on the boat dock, sharing the patio with a more than friendly mallard. The sun-drenched master bedroom/bathroom are so stunning that my normally self-sacrificing elderly mother and father immediately claimed it for themselves. They thoroughly enjoyed the panoramic view :-) The Great Room kitchen/dining/living area easily accommodated the number of guests we had for the graduation party even though the cool weather kept us from spilling out onto the porch that runs the entire length of the house. When we had the time to canoe or kayak on the lake we were delighted by the waves and words of welcome we received from other boaters and those enjoying their own bit of shoreline. And, even though you feel like you are far from civilization, provisions for all you need are close by. The kitchen is well equipped, beautiful, and thoughtfully open in design so those cooking don't feel left out of the action. Save one night to order scrumptious pizza from the local deli though. I don't know what more we could have asked for except another week free of any other obligations with nothing more to do besides enjoy the house and the lake. Can we give Doug/Judy and the House On The Rock more than 5 Stars? I would if I could!

A Gem of a retreat on a lake in the magnificent Hudson Valley

  • 5 of 5

Our first impression on entering the House on the Rock was the warmth we felt from the color of wood through out the interior from the furnishings, the wide pine wood floors, walls, ceiling and the attention to the hand crafted details though out this remarkable many million dollar getaway retreat. We felt an overwhelming feeling of relaxation from the monument we arrived until our day of departure. I'll always remember sitting in the large enclosed windowed porch watching wildlife from high over this beautiful lake and each evening waiting for a magnificent sunset over the rolling hills in the distance. We enjoyed waking on the secluded wooded lanes around the lake in this exclusive location and meeting very friendly neighbors who have been part of this area for decades. The owners are extremely pleasant and have also been here for decades. We could imagine spending the rest of our time at this place. Our family recently traveled to Hawaii on a sixteen hour flight and arrived exhausted. The drive from New York to the Hudson Valley left us refreshed without the hassle of flying. There is as much beauty to experience and explore as anywhere we have been before and it's just an hour away from New York. We look forward to our return next year.
