Gorgeous property creating a peaceful retreat
Our family (father, mother, two gown boys ages 20 and 24) enjpyed a wonderful week at Killasonna lodge. The house is impeccably beautiful, welcoming with its warm wood interiors with all the modern conveniences. The property is goregous, right on the shore of Lake Michigan. All throughout the day, we enjoyed quiet time contemplating the beauty of the lake and shore from the comfort of the porch of the house, or down on the chaise lounges closer to the waterfront. The fire-pit area is spacious and well planned; there is an ample supply of dried firewood; and we ended each day with toasted marshmallows or s'mores. The property is quiet and secluded, but an easly and short drive (or cycle) from the best of Door County: Cave Point, Whitefish Dunes, the more 'touristy' towns on the other side of the Door Peninsula, and Cana Island Lighthouse. In short, we loved Killasonna, and we loved our stay. Hoping to return next year for another wonderful stay. Thank you to our hosts, who were responsive and helpful!

Quiet Cabin
Cabin is great and pictures represent it well. Really beautiful architecture. Very quiet and secluded we did not see another neighbor during the stay. Nice indoor and outdoor sitting areas with small rock beach. A couple tips, the cabin has a charcoal grill instead of propane, so you need to bring in your own supplies to use. Also, water has a lot of minerals, there is a sign on the washing machine that clothes may get rust colored from using, which did happen during stay. Last, would definitely recommend water shoes if plan to use rock beach, especially for kids.

Lake Michigan Beauty
Home was right on the lake. Interior was well-appointed and well-equipped. We are cyclists and the lightly traveled road was a nice place to start a ride. The owner was very helpful with suggestions about where to go and where to eat.

Great place to spend a vacation!
We had a wonderful week at Killasonna Lodge! The home is just beautifully constructed and the layout is perfect for our 3 generation family, giving my mom her own space on the main level. The kitchen is the best stocked of any rental we’ve ever stayed at, from utensils to spices and condiments! The fire pit by the water is fabulous as well, although the view from the porch is also excellent. We love the location, our family prefers the quiet side and proximity to Cave Point. We were a little surprised to find no television, but ended up not missing it at all! The cabin was very clean and the owners are easy to reach and give a lot of information and helpful hints about the area.

Wonderful Vacation
The property was just as described. John was very easy to communicate with about the property and the local area. The house was very comfortable and suited us well. Jacksonport is one of the quieter towns which was great for us. The house is within 2 miles of two of the best swimming beaches. We hope to stay again. This was one of our favorite properties.

We are both Chicago natives, now living in Evanston, IL. Carolyn is an architect and formerly a municipal building official. John managed major design and construction projects for Northwestern University. We are now semi-retired, operating a business called University Icons. In a nutshell, we sell fine art photographs of iconic university buildings. The business draws on John’s long standing avocation of photography, our combined enjoyment of travel and mutual interest in architecture. We each have two daughters from previous marriages.

Why they chose this property

After years of vacationing in Door County, we began looking at cottages and land in the summer of 2002, with the idea of either buying or building a summer cabin. We clocked hundreds of miles, over many weekends, driving back and forth across the peninsula in search of the right property. Nothing seemed just right. Carolyn had a yearning for a cabin on the lake, or at least a view, but our budget was slim. Eventually we found ourselves along the Lake Michigan shore, staring into dense woods. In the foreground a sign read, For Sale - 1.5 acres. Curiosity forced us to take a walk through the woods. Of course, we fell in love with it the moment we stepped on shore. The price of the land exceeded our total budget (Isn't that always the case?), but we had fallen in love and there was no stopping us. We concocted a scheme: We would rent the place out to vacationers and enjoy it ourselves when it was free.

As soon as our offer was accepted, we began sketching potential designs like mad. We closed on the property in early December, 2002 and cleared the woods for the driveway before Christmas. Construction started the following March, and by the end of the year, the bulk of construction was finished. On January 1, 2004 we launched our website and signed up with VRBO. We spent that spring building, varnishing and hanging doors, varnishing the cabinets, shopping for furniture, etc. It was a photo finish. When our first guests arrived that spring, the paint on the shed doors was still wet.

Killasonna Lodge is situated in an area that was developed in 1922 by an enterprising young woman named Annie Reynolds. She called the plat of subdivision “The Killasonna Plat.” We borrowed the name to commemorate her vision.

What makes this property unique

Carolyn swears that the best therapy is to simply collect kindling in the woods for the fire place or the fire pit. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
