We rebuilt the house from top to bottom over the last 10 year using local natural resources. We have enjoyed these past 10 years of weekend, summer and winter breaks from the city. They have been some of the best times of our lives.
John Ryan purchased this chateau / country house in 2000
This location was only 90 minutes from New York City and 1 mile off the Taconic Parkway. The country setting was totally relaxing but there is endless things to do and places to go all within a short distance driving that you could never find in the city.
Sitting back and watching the renowned Dutchess County Sunset on a summers evening. Or walking around the neighborhood as a family with our dog, meeting our neighbors along the way. Getting to know not only our neighbors but the regulars in the local village that have lived there for years but are still welcoming to newcomers. It is always the best place to have a family party, and not only do we enjoy it but our family and friends look forward to their chance to drive up and spend the weekend there, either relaxing or celebrating.
Three friends and I stayed at this lovely, charming home while we were in the area for a weekend in mid-October. Though we had a very busy weekend scheduled and weren't able to spend much time in the house, when we were there it was delightfully cozy. The downstairs sitting area is very spacious - perfect for relaxing and enjoying the fall foliage in front of the large windows. The huge dining table would be perfect for doing a puzzle on a rainy afternoon, and though it wasn't particularly cold outside during our visit we did enjoy a fire in the fireplace one evening. The location of the house is prime, in the middle of a wooded, residential area that's close to Rhinebeck, where we spent most of our time during the weekend.
There was one small hitch upon our arrival, which is the reason I have given four stars instead of five. It appeared that the owner had not been to the house after the guests who stayed before us. We arrived to find that the bedroom sheets had not been washed since the previous guests' stay, and the bathroom towels were piled on the floor, also seemingly unwashed. It wasn't a huge issue, as we're pretty flexible people, but it did mean that we had to do a few loads of laundry when we first got there. The guests before us also had not emptied the (full) bathroom trash upon their departure, so it was also up to us to do a bit of cleaning up after them.
All things considered, we did greatly enjoy our time staying at this beautiful home.
Had a weekend getaway with some friends. House was in a nice quiet location with a pool however I messaged the owner upon arrival about the AC not working and he never got back to me. With other messages, such as payment information, he was quick to reply. We spent all weekend (and it was well into the 90s) with no AC, waking up sweating. Poor customer service! If you advertise your house with AC and it doesn't work, the renter is not getting what they paid for.. even just a reply would have been nice. Would not stay here again and recommend the same to anybody searching.
Everything functioned as advertised. Our group enjoyed the seclusion & peacefulness of the property. The granddaughters loved the pool.
Would definitely stay at this property again, should we be in the area.
Four of us and one dog stayed at this house in August. It happened to be one of the hottest weeks of the summer, but we didn't let that deter us from seeing the local sights. The house is charming, but does need some basic updating. The owner was extremely responsive to some of our issues (and acted very generously) and in spite of some hiccups, we did manage to enjoy ourselves. Although our party didn't include children, this would be an ideal house for a family to rent.
A group of 8 of us rented the house for a weekend in August, to get away from the city (we all live in NYC). The house is very spacious, with a nice pool with balls and a hoop. The water slide was broken when we got there, but it looked like it just needed to be bolted down again.
There are a ton of chairs and places to relax, including an outdoor hammock and some pretty comfortable beds in the house. The big TV and surround sound make for good entertainment, though the WiFi didn't work, so that was a bit of a nuisance.
The house is secluded and quiet, which enhanced the experience for us getting away from the concrete jungle. Everything was pretty well kept and clean. One bonus was a neat chess table in the living room, which got some good use.
All in all, I would definitely recommend this house if you're looking for a nice weekend/week-long getaway.
What a delight it was to gather 9 old friends together at this charming little gem of a house. The highlight of the property is definitely the amazing deck and pool. We did have a couple of minor issues during our stay. The AC was not working in the downstairs and the refrigerator was not cooling well. But Mr. Ryan was extremely responsive in dealing with any of our issues. He sent over HVAC professionals to get the AC up and running and advised us of the back up fridge in the basement in case of emergency. The house was well kept, full of charming decor and very comfortable. It accommodated all of us without a problem. We had a lovely dinner in downtown Reinbeck - just a short drive away. I think we would all stay here again without hesitation. Thank you Mr. Ryan for the use of your beautiful home.
