Romantic Santa Fe Casita with Cozy Fireplace & Spectacular Views!

Perched on a mountainside just off the historic Old Santa Fe Trail, this beautiful 800-square-foot, one bedroom casita enjoys spectacular views. Grab your camera for Santa Fe's glorious sunsets that illuminate four mountain ranges. After dark, you'll look out on a carpet of twinkly lights below and genuinely endless stars above. Enjoy our balmy high desert climate from the private wrap-around, covered portal with beautiful wildflower gardens. Inside, relax in a classic Santa Fe setting. Linger over the Sunday paper on the down-filled couch, peek up at a blanket of stars through skylights placed throughout this peaceful residence, and sleep soundly in the handsome wrought-iron, queen-size bed with luxury linens from the Sundance catalog.

The kitchen is fully equipped with old-fashioned china, Mexican wine goblets and a gourmet chef's cookware collection. The bathroom is quintessential New Mexico, decorated in colorful tiles and outfitted with plush Egyptian cotton towels. The casita is stocked with a coffee maker, blender, microwave, toaster, WI-FI and flat-screen satellite television. We can also provide an outdoor grill and an outdoor copper fire pit for sipping wine while the sun sets (at your request). There is no phone service, but good cell phone coverage.

Santa Fe is the pinup town for the Southwest, famous for its wildflower gardens corralled by plump adobe walls. But it's also a brainy vortex of science, art and culture, with a side of freaky-deaky New Age shamanism. Of late, some notable intelligent life has landed: Microsoft co-founder Paul Allen, writer Cormac McCarthy and former CIA agent Valerie Plame. As the town's polymathic tendencies have snowballed, Santa Fe has been reborn as the white-hot center of an American Renaissance.

Anointed America's first UNESCO Creative City, the nation's oldest state capital is celebrating its 400th year with a newly-minted identity: the Florence of the 21st century. Scientists here are mapping genetic codes in the human brain, developing mind-boggling agent-based computer prediction models and making giant strides in alternative energy. Santa Fe has been nicknamed Tamalewood for the plethora of films being shot here. Love opera? The Met's best come to the Santa Fe Opera every summer for a season of acclaimed new and classic operas performed in Santa Fe's architectural jewel of an opera house, constructed in a contemporary clam shell shape. Throughout the year you can snag amazing seats at some of the best rock, country, jazz and classical concerts in the country at Santa Fe's intimate venues. The Lannan Foundation brings internationally-renowned writers, artists and musicians to speak in the beautifully-restored Lensic Theater. With more than 135 galleries, Santa Fe is firmly entrenched as the second largest art market in the country.

Getting here just got easier. The Railrunner now whisks train passengers between Albuquerque's International Airport and the Santa Fe Railyard in chic Santa Fe style. A refreshingly-modern upstart sibling to the town's historic Plaza, the artistic and hip Railyard area is Santa Fe's new SoHo on Old West holy ground: the end of the spur-line for the Atchinson, Topeka and Santa Fe railroad. The Railyard's soul (and the brain trust of the slow food movement) is the Santa Fe Farmer's Market. Stalls heaped with colorful local produce, organic lamb, artisan cheeses, and buckets of New Mexican sunflowers greet you every Tuesday and Saturday morning. The fooderati flock to Santa Fe not only for its extraordinary farmer's market. Its inventive chefs and their entertaining cooking classes, and the renowned Wine & Chili Festival draw huge numbers as well. Art collectors troll Santa Fe's eclectic galleries, prestigious museums and art festivals throughout the summer including SITE Santa Fe's International Biennial, Indian Market, Spanish Market, and the International Folk Art Market.

Northern New Mexico is Georgia O'Keeffe country: red rocks sculpted by wind and rain climb from the desert floor; mountains covered in Aspen trees frame electric blue skies. It's warm (and thanks to the altitude, never too hot) in the summer. In the winter, everything is blanketed in deep powdery snow. This stunning landscape is home to world-class skiing, biking, rafting, kayaking, hiking, golf, fly fishing, rock and ice climbing. (Santa Fe's own ski resort, Ski Santa Fe, is just 35 minutes from our door; Taos Ski Valley is two hours north.)

Feel free to contact us for many more photos of this lovely retreat and any other information about visiting Santa Fe. We hope to meet you soon!

About Anne Sides

My husband and I are both writers who've lived in Santa Fe for over 20 years. We live near the casita so we're there to answer any questions, recommend restaurants, galleries, hikes and day trips.

Anne Sides purchased this cottage in 2002

Why Anne Sides chose New Mexico

We fell in love with Santa Fe on a romantic road trip 27 years ago. Five years later we settled in and never intend to leave! This is our home, where our children were born and raised, and where we've put down real and lasting roots.

What makes this cottage unique

We offer guests a welcome basket with local New Mexico snacks, a bottle of one of New Mexico's fine wines, sparkling wine or local beer (whichever you prefer), and breakfast supplies for the first few days of your stay.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Dear Anne, Thank you for another magical respite in "our" casita, up above Santa Fe in the hills of the Sangre de Christo mountains. Your property, all 14 acres, surrounds us with the tranquility of nature and only 15 minutes from the plaza. The casita is perfect for us, not too small, not too big, and with the wrap around porch, well, it's hard to leave. This will be our 6th year staying with you and Hampton and we have grown to love your family as much as we love our nest. You have provided an affordable and magical place for us to spend a month away from the Texas heat and embraced by your hospitality and now, enduring friendship. With deep affection, thank you for providing a refuge we cherish more than you know. See you soon!

Best Santa Fe vista overlook imaginable and accommodations perfect for monh-long escape heat-humidit

  • 5 of 5

Superb pillow-top bed; deep 2-sided shady wrap-around portale for dining, grilling, reading, hanging out with local friends & family; ranging acreage convenient for arroyo hiking explorations; superb "neighborhood" indoor-outdoor diner-bar, iconic Harry's Roadhouse, with ever-changing eclectic, mostly organic menu, 3 mins drive away; perfect size kitchen for preparing full meals for self and company; nicest, witty, intelligent community-involved hosts imaginable. Best dollar value by far for this quintessential Santa Fe escape.

Best VRBO stay ever!

  • 5 of 5

Dear Anne,

How gratifying to us retired educators, parents, grandparents, and dedicated sustainable community builders to know that the proceeds from leasing your historic casita (for our 6th summer running as a month-long escape from Northeast Texas heat and humidity) continue to help fund the higher education of your and Hampton's 3 delightful sons. As a result, we feel we are helping them in some small manner to pursue their chosen teaching-learning experiences, as they shape their young adult lives of creative community service, augmenting that which you as parents continue to model for them in so many ever-fascinating and important ways.

The "spirit of place"—provided us in the tranquil Sides Casita under the expansive Santa Fe mountain-sky vistas, perched high above the twinkling lights of the Santa Fe Plaza just minutes drive below and within even fewer minutes drive or walk to the always-packed, ever-stimulating local ambience and affordably innovative cuisine of Harry's Roadhouse, as well as countless walking-hiking trails emanating from the arroyo of your acreage border—tops our considerable B&B experiences worldwide.

Upon arrival we are always greeted with the bounty of your neighbors' nesting hens, local organic produce, and our favorite chile cheese bread in your well-appointed kitchen, which we use throughout our stay to pamper not only ourselves but also the visits of guests who share with us the tranquility your casita provides us. Hampton's ample former reading library-writing studio serves as the living room nexus to the kitchen/bath, comfy bedroom with dresser and sleeper sofa (with exceptional closet/storage space), and the wrap-around covered outdoor portale seen through the living room sliding glass doors—with ample seating for us and our guests for reading, quiet conversation, dining, and unwinding in the soft breeze across the double hammock, all accented by the colorful hummingbird-attracting native plant garden and mountain vista backdrop beyond the rustic coyote privacy fence.

Small wonder that the likes of Ansel Adams chose to stay at this guest house for his contemplative Northern New Mexico photographic work decades ago!

Thank you, Anne and Hampton, for opening up your immaculate casita to us fortunate VRBO travelers and for always being at the ready to meet our every VRBO need,

steve

Great place to relax in Santa Fe!

  • 5 of 5

We loved our stay at the Sides' casita in Santa Fe. We had plenty of space and privacy and they helped us with recommendations on things to see and do. My husband was able to mountain bike to trails he wanted to try as well as hit the roads on his road bike without getting in the car. I thought this was a great location, not being too close to the hustle of the Plaza and downtown, but close enough to get there in just a few minutes. We were able to visit during the International Folk Art Market and if you ever have that opportunity, you must go! It was amazing.

My fifth summer in the casita, and every year gets better. Up in the hills to the east of town. Quiet. Lots of privacy and large open space on property. Comfy bedroom and good-sized living room. Small but functional kitchen and bathroom. Wonderful covered deck with hammock. Great views. Stunning sunsets. Can see the Albuquerque lights at night. Can see the Milky Way to the East. Five-minute drive to town and Canyon Road. Nice hikes in every direction. Ten-minute drive to 10,000 Waves. Twenty-minute drive to the opera. The Sides are ideal hosts. I'll be back.

Another great summer . . .

  • 5 of 5

I just spent a third great summer in the Sides' casita--this one the best yet. Incredible views from the property up in the hills east of town. Mornings in the 50's. Evenings in the 60's. Easy drive in. Incredibly peaceful and quiet. The Sides are wonderful and generous hosts. Already scheduled to return next summer.
