Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in West Boothbay Harbor - Arden Carriage House

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

The essence of Maine captured in a private and quiet waterfront setting nestled in the woods with soaring pines, vegetable and flower gardens and the smell of salt air, and your own deck and firepit. You feel immediately at home from the moment you turn into the driveway. This light-filled shingle carriage house has spectacular water views, a private deck, outdoor grilling and dining--a perfect get-away and retreat from city life.

The interior of this romantic hideaway features wood beams, gas fireplace for cool nights, gleaming hardwood floors, and lovely bedroom and bath. There is open galley kitchen, stone counter tops, and everything a great cook would want. Contemporary European design and antique furnishings makes the carriage house feel cozy and welcoming. Whether you wander in the woods, enjoy the flower gardens, see what is ripe in the garden, hop along the rocks on the shore or find a spot to read or sun: you are always relaxed and absorb the too rare pleasure of sheer leisure.

The large private dock and protected tidal cove are another magnet for staying put --sunlight sparking on the water, early morning coffee, bird watching, kayaking, brisk swims, clamming at low tide, lazy sunset drinks, or night-time stargazing.

Whether lazy or active, you will find ARDEN warm and cozy, and a perfect private vacation spot to.enjoy the four acres of surrounding woods, lawn, gardens, sitting areas, and paths leading down to 1,300 feet of rocky shore and dock. Like Maine itself, it offers a wonderful sense of life as it should be.

When you are ready to venture out, downtown Boothbay Harbor is five minutes away -- quintesential Maine where you can explore the eclectic mix of shops and galleries, get in a round of golf, take in a live performance. You can experience the working waterfront, lobster boats, enjoy the annual parade of schooners, or ice cream at its best. You can get out on the water for a sail, a whale watch, a lighthouse tour, or even a day trip to Monhegan Island where artists have summered for generations to paint.

In between you can hike on one of the Conservation nature trails or enjoy a lobster feast dockside or on your own deck. A five minute car ride will bring you to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens or a hidden sandy beach. A little further afield, are Camden, Rockland, Rockport, and Freeport-- all an hour's drive.-- And just getting there allows one to soak in the natural beauty of Coastal Maine and the opportunity to discover the many still little changed villages and harbors.

Keywords: Private and romantic Carriage House. Sunny, loft feel, soaring contemporary wooden ceiling, stunning water views, wrap around deck, sitting and outdoor cooking area, and manicured gardens on 4 acre estate with private dock, main house, boat house, and outdoor shower. Wifi.

Why Abigail Friedland chose Boothbay

We chose the name Arden from the Arden Woods which was the setting for As You like It. Shakespeare compared the Arden Woods with Eden -- a magical place where people are transformed through self-discovery and finding love. For our family and friends Arden has indeed been an apt name. This four-acre land, gardens, and woods feels like a special place. Friendship has been celebrated, children and grandchildren have gathered and played. We have laughed, read, rested, feasted, explored, and spent many hours playing games and talking in winter and summer, in sunshine, fog, rain and snow.

Most especially we have all been embraced and nurtured by the warmth, beauty, and sturdiness of this house.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My wife and I decided to visit Maine for our summer vacation. We choose the Boothbay Harbor area and as soon as we came across the Arden Carriage House we knew it was the place for us. It was everything we expected it to be and even went beyond our expectations. The carriage house has this amazing feeling of being at home and it's a wonderful place to either stay at all day or come back to after a long day of exploring the area. The property of Arden fosters an attitude that is perfect for relaxation and getting away from the craziness of life. If we find the opportunity to visit Maine again, we will definitely be choosing the Arden Carriage House!

Arden House--superb rental

  • 5 of 5

We have booked many vacation rentals through VRBO/HomeAway over the years and Arden House is in our top three! The property is well maintained with beautiful gardens, seating areas, and dock. I enjoyed kayaking every morning--kayaks, paddles, and life jackets provided. My husband loved grilling over the fire pits and walking the trails while I shopped in Boothbay Harbor.

The carriage house is comfortable and is beautifully decorated. I admired the art, pottery, and furnishings that make this rental a home. Abigail expertly handles the booking process and Jim and Barbara are wonderful for local recommendations.

Boothbay Harbor has a lot to offer--many quaint shops, good food, and fantastic views. A few of our favorites are Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, Cabbage Island Clambake, Oliver's at Cosy Harbor for drinks in a relaxing setting, Dunton's Dog House and Katie's Hideaway for fresh seafood at roadside stands, and Abacus for unique gifts.

Arden House is definitely a five-star!!

Fantastic fall get away!

  • 5 of 5

Thanks for the wonderful time! We loved every minute of our trip to Maine. We hit all your favorites including Trevitt's for lobster rolls (twice) and the trails at the Botanical Gardens are gorgeous! We loved the carriage house and the location to everything was perfect. Thanks for everything and we hope to see Arden some time again in the future!

We had a lovely stay at the carriage house. Everything was just as it was advertised & in great condition. If we had a question we called the property caretaker & he was right there to take care of it. The Dock was a lovely place to sit & the grounds were very beautiful. Thank you for making our vacation so lovely we had a wonderful time.

Fantastic spot

  • 4 of 5

We loved our week at the Arden Carriage House. The property is beautiful and the location was great for exploring Maine. So many awesome destinations & daytrips were less than an hour away! The accomodations were excellent. The bed was super comfy and the linens unbelievably soft. Dishwasher, washer & dryer, all the appliances you'll need.

Visually, the unit is gorgeous. Wood everywhere! In some respects, mind you, it seemed like there was perhaps a little more attention to form rather than function. In particular, lighting in the kitchen & bathroom was not great. Combined with the lack of light in the bathroom was the inability to get close to the mirror because of the raised sink. (Particularly for me, at 5'4", I just wasn't tall enough to bend in close!) For the week I applied makeup and he shaved without really being able to see what we were doing. (The mirror in the bedroom was in the dark & too far away, too). But it was vacation, so we weren't too concerned about being glamorous. ;o) A few more bathroom towel bars or hooks would help, as would something in the shower for storing shampoo etc. The non-adjustable (no tilt) european showerhead only extends about 6" from the wall, so although the gorgeous glass shower enclosure is huge, you have to press up to the wall and the tap to be under the water. As is typical of many vacation rentals I've been to, the kitchen items left a little to be desired. The knives were brutally dull, cutting boards questionable and there was only 1 hard to find, greasy pot holder for hot things. If you plan to stock up on a few groceries, be aware there is very little cupboard space available. What few cupboards there are were already filled (16 liqueur glasses? 16 chunky wine glasses? In a unit that sleeps at most 4, definitely overkill, lol). As an aside, the dinner plates are small, luncheon size plates, which was strange. There is no closet in the bedroom & really nowhere to put your suitcases, which you'll be living out of.

Are any of these things deal breakers? Of course not. But they are distractions. The owners communicated well, the paperwork tells you all you need to know about the proprty and the area, the caretaker Jim was helpful & friendly and everything was clean. We loved sitting down on the dock with a glass (or two, or three!) of wine and just relaxing. I would not hesitate to recommend the Arden Carriage House.

Beautiful carriage house, amazing setting

  • 5 of 5

This rental is really special. We loved everything about the property – so much care was taken with the landscaping and the outdoor seating and the beautiful vistas – there was literally something new to discover around every corner. It made me happy every time I turned into the driveway to know what was awaiting us. It's really hard to describe how lovely the property is but trust me...

The Boothbay region is a fun place to explore – if you have kids, DO NOT MISS the Maine Coastal Botanical Garden, which is right around the corner from Arden. We spent most of the day there and had we known they had kayaking, we might have spent even longer. There is also a small little aquarium just down the road - small as in one room - but good for an hour or so of fun for the kids.

The upstairs unit was really comfortable with everything you’ll need. It was spotlessly clean (something I don’t always find in VRBO rentals), the kitchen was fully stocked, the bed was comfortable and there was a fireplace and TV/DVD player for the occasional rainy day. The washer/dryer unit was nice to have as well.

This is by far the best all-around VRBO rental we've had in Maine; I'd love to return. Thank you!

Beautiful Carriage house - wonderful quiet setting

  • 5 of 5

Perfect place to relax and enjoy the quietness and beauty of Maine. We were impressed by the craftsmanship of the Carriage House; the inside ceiling resembles a boat with a curved I believe cedar planking that rises up from the walls to the peak. All the fixtures add to the charm and relaxing feel of the place.

There is ample room out of doors to share with the main house and even with 6-8 guests there we hardly ever saw them and when we did it was a pleasant encounter. There are numerous places to sit and read, draw or sunbathe or relax in the woods, along a trail or by the shore to sit in a chair, bench, hammock, stools that are provided all over the place each in their own well thought out vantage point of beautiful views. There are two places with fire pits for the evening get together with family and friends. There is even a large pot on a gas burner for steaming your lobsters corn or clams. Just a short distance away is small restaurant with indoor and outdoor seating and fresh lobsters or fish to buy or eat there. They had bluegrass bands playing both evenings we were there.

You are 3o minutes from Bath and the Boat Works-Maritime Museum, about 45 minutes to Pemaquid Point Lighthouse and close to Wiscasset and Damariscotta art galleries.

All in all a great place to be this summer. I think we will definitely be back next year!
