Slaughter Beach is a world famous birding habitat. You can marvel at the hundreds of bird species including the endangered Red Knot as they stop to feed on Horse Shoe crab eggs on their way north. Most people thrill at the spectacle while others are a little horrified by the crab's primitive looks. They are completely harmless but can cause the water's edge to be a littered with their shells.
Watch for the just hatched baby turtles headed to the Marvel Preserve just behind us in early summer. Slaughter Beach is surrounded by preserves to all three non water sides and Eagles can be seen nesting at the south end.
The quaint town of Lewes, Delaware is a short drive of 15 minutes in the off season. Also don't miss hip Rehoboth Beach (25 miles) which is about a half hour drive in the off season and longer on crowded summer weekends. Movies at Midway are only 15 minutes on Route 1.
Please note: Slaughter Beach is perfect for nature lovers and anyone that is looking for beauty and a place to give yourself peace of mind. This is a rustic area which can be remote and deserted feeling for some folks.

We spent New Years weekend at the Mermaid cottage with our dogs. The fenced in yard was perfect, the house was very clean and had everything you needed. The owners were very responsive when we needed the fireplace pilot turned on and access to the grill in the garage. We enjoyed walks on the beach everyday where you would often find the beach to yourself. Only recommendation would be to extend the fence to the back yard, but we will definitely be back. Thank you!! It was a perfect and relaxing weekend.
What a nice place. And the decorations add to the overall feeling of being away and somewhere special. The beach is a few steps outside and the little fenced yard was perfect for our little dogs. Slaughter beach is really beautiful. Sunrises are so romantic on the water.
THis home is great - great waterfront as well... I always come in the winter and have never been let down .. It is clean, relaxing and the owner is very fast with the reservation even in the last hour.. ( I literally booked about 12 hours before arrival and they could accomodate.. My pups also love the fenced in yard. The owner is a great realtor as well, so if you ever need any real estate there they can help .. ( just don't purchase what I am looking at )
Thanks again for opening your home o my dogs and me - in the last hour - you do a wonderful job on your home there ..

On a whim, I booked the Mermaid Cottage for one night over the weekend b/c I needed to walk on the beach, hear the waves and gulls and smell the salt air. In spite of the horrid name, Slaughter Beach is a laid-back, undeveloped stretch of houses on or across the street from the beach. The cottage is clean and adorable with a back yard, fenced in front yard, and right on the beach.
Would love to stay here another time for an entire week.
We had a very good time, the cottage is so cute. It was clean and loved the fenced in yard.
The cottage is adorable inside. We knew it was pet friendly prior to renting but the amount of animal hair on every surface, especially the couches, was pretty awful. It would have been much better if the furniture had been cleaned, vaccumed before new renters came in but otherwise very clean. The path down to the water is very narrow with prickly plants overgrown on it. And I'd like to mention how terrible the horseshoe flies were! We couldn't stay outside for more than 20 minutes, even with bug spray and the closer to the water the worse it got!
The location however is excellent. We spend half the time in Dover visiting museums. The Air Mobility Museum was amazing, free and only about 25-30 minutes away. In the opposite direction about 25 minutes was a boardwalk and Cape Henlopen State Park which was an awesome find. $10 for the day with bike trails, swimming in the ocean, activity center and tons of history from WW2 with a lot of massive guns and look out towers!
Overall we would definitely return.
Slaughter Beach is also home to the Milford Neck Wildlife Area. Tourists are attracted to this area for bird watching as many birds stop over to eat the eggs of horseshoe crabs as they lay their eggs on the beaches. Along with Broadkill and Pickering beaches, this area is officially designated as a horseshoe crab sanctuary. Because Slaughter Beach is such an important area for the continued survival of horseshoe crabs and the migrating birds that depend on their eggs, the town has adopted the horseshoe crab as its official town symbol.
