Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday townhome in Washington DC - Stanton Park Flat

1 bedroom with queen bed, 1 full bathroom

This is an attractive ground floor flat in a Victorian town house, and was completely renovated in 2010. It is on a quiet residential street, yet as centrally located as it gets. The Capitol complex and the Supreme Court are only three blocks away. 'Restaurant Row', a stretch of Massachusetts Avenue with numerous restaurants, is only one block away. The National Mall, Smithsonian Museums, the Newseum, and a Metro station are all within walking distance. You will not need a car. In terms of size, the flat is ideal for a couple, or perhaps a couple with a child. It is also suitable for seniors, because the entrance is at street level and there are no stairs. The flat is totally independent from the main house above, with a separate entrance, mechanical systems, phone line, etc. To sum it up, this little place is small in size, but big on charm!

About Alec Smyth

My wife and I are both management consultants who have traveled widely for decades, and have developed a strong sense of what we like in a locale and in accommodations. We actively manage our vacation rentals as a future retirement plan, but we select and prepare them by asking a simple test question -- would we be happy to live in them ourselves?

Alec Smyth purchased this townhome in 2010

Why Alec Smyth chose Washington DC

We picked this home expressly for vacation rental use, with the hindsight of having lived in this area for close to twenty years. It is just ideally situated with a combination of easy access to the major sites, and quiet once back home.

What makes this townhome unique

The location! This is a place which is extremely quiet, where you are the shortest possible distance to the major DC attractions, and where you feel safe walking at any hour of night or day. It's a neighborhood that is utterly livable. There is wonderful grocery shopping nearby, restaurants you would visit with the family, bookstores, etc. Metro is a few blocks away if you need to go beyond walking range.

Great for 5 days in DC

  • 5 of 5

The apartment is just as pictured on VRBO. Travelling with our 11 yo, we needed a place to call home. Were able to eat breakfast, do laundry, watch TV, and be comfortable for this time. It made our trip relaxing and fun. The beds were both comfy, including the pullout, and the place is well appointed for cooking (breakfast!) Alec's place fit the bill, and we appreciated his DC orientation guide as well! Would definitely consider staying here again.

Helpful hints - the apartment is an easy bus ride to the center of DC with great access to the bus (the D6) stops almost out the front door. We travel with earplugs, which were helpful for the AC noise. Good, healthy food choices abound, but not so near the place, and there is not walkable coffee house nearby either. It is possible to walk to all the museums and sites, if you are up for a long walk. We enjoyed that. Capitol Bike is not conducive for kids under 12 or 13 depending on their size.

Cozy flat with easy access to tourist sights and neighborhood night life

  • 4 of 5

This fun little flat had everything we (two adults with a young child) needed. The flat is in a great location - easy to get to the Capitol and the Smithsonian, either by foot or by Metro. The neighborhood was fun, too. (You MUST check out We The Pizza and Pitango Gelato for dessert!) Although there was NO PARKING PASS (read the description, not the reviews), the owner did his best to secure the one that "belonged" to the upstairs guests. Still, there was ample street parking in the morning and evenings, such that we essentially had our car there from 6:30 pm to 9 am the next day. The kitchen was just the right size for the three of us, and the fireplace was fun (firewood was stocked outside), even though we didn't use it.

So why four stars? The guests upstairs were quite noisy (it sounded like they were moving furniture from 5 pm to 8 or 9 pm), although we didn't expect the owner to be able to do anything about that. The bathroom was quite small and could use some updating (tile, floors), while the bedroom light fixtures were not put together very well. The windows had bars, so for safety, I took the sofa bed while my wife and child took the bedroom. They LOVED the bed, while the sofa bed had a nasty bar in it right by my chest.

These little things didn't distract us from loving our time in the flat, though. The owner was always quick to reply, and the guide/handbook was incredibly helpful. The neighbors seemed really friendly, too. Plus, there was a park with a playground one block away. We would definitely recommend staying there, as it was well worth the money (especially for longer stays, i.e. more than two nights).

Owner's Response: I should probably clarify things about the parking permit. We do not advertise this unit with one, and the location is such that a car is more of a hindrance than a benefit. The guests who need a permit are normally those who arrive by car and leave it parked for the duration of their stay. There is a commercial garage nearby that charges $24 per day. We sometimes borrow the parking permit from a unit that does come with one, if our guest there does not need it, but please don't plan on that as it is just a favor and subject to availability. Regarding the bars on the windows, they are a leftover from the seventies and eighties when DC had a high crime rate. These days, happily things are far different. You will see young women out jogging alone at all hours, children walking unaccompanied to the neighborhood pool, etc. The recovery has been going on now for about twenty years and this house is located in a top notch residential area where the small Victorian row-houses are priced in the millions. Please do look through our reviews, you will see a great many guests commenting on the safety of the neighborhood.

Property was great and just as advertised

  • 5 of 5

We really enjoyed our stay in Washington DC even though it was freezing cold. The unit is centrally located in Capital Hill and we found three great restaurants in the area to walk to that were close by since it was so cold. The unit was just the right size for two adults but I don't know how many others could have fit along with us. Having a parking pass was a great plus as we just parked the car when we arrived and didn't have to move it till we left. The unit was very clean and starter supplies were just as advertised. My questions were answered promptly and I thank the property owner for that. It was a pleasure to stay in this unit as it was my first VRBO stay and hopefully not my last

The house is located on a quiet friendly street less than half a block from Stanton Park and one block from Restaurant Row, a block of restaurants with tables right on the sidewalk. Capitol Hill is a historical conservation neighborhood of beautifully maintained, charming old houses. It has a small-town feel and a human scale, is cosmopolitan, and has a thriving cultural scene. The residential area closest to Washington's institutions, it is home to a large number of politicians and VIPs.

Other Activities: US Congress, Smithsonian, Newseum, Library of Congress, National Archives, Folger Shakespeare
