In the beautiful foothills of the Pyrenees, France, in the hamlet of L'Escale, near Puivert, South West France - about 14km from the market town of Quillan and around 80km south of Carcassonne - is Le Chalet, our French holiday self catering chalet which enjoys panoramic views across the mountains of the Pyrenees and forests.
A wonderful base for your exploration of the Cathar Pyrenees, with its ancient castles, forests and spectacular mountain gorges and also excellent country for walking, cycling, horseriding, canoeing and hang-gliding. Puivert has a lake with beach for swimming in summer with stunning views only a few minutes from the chalet. Birdwatching is excellent with many species especially raptors not seen in the UK. You will definitely need your binoculars!
With an altitude of 630m, Puivert is only a one and a half hour drive to the Mediterranean or Andorra. Just half an hour from ski stations at Camurac and Chiula and one hour from Carcassonne.
Accommodation - sleeps up to 7 (extra foldaway bed)

Where you can eat
Most of the local towns and villages have excellent restuarants when you want to eat out. We have included information about many of these in our in house handbook which is also updated with the experiences of our previous guests.
Alternatively, if you wish to eat at home, there are full facilities with cooker, fridge, microwave, all crockery and cutlery and a large outdoor barbecue.
On Wednesday evenings in the summer months there is a soirée in Puivert where our guests are very welcome.
The Chalet is situated on the edge of the delightful hamlet of Lescale which is just 2.7 miles above Puivert with its local shops, bar, large bathing and boating lake and a restuarant.
Puivert rests towards one end of a stunningly beautiful valley which stretches for several miles with dramatic colours representing each of the four seasons and overlooked by its historic Chateau.
Behind Lescale is a road which winds its way up into the mountains towards the skiing resorts of Camurac and Ax Le Thermes with its ski lifts and hot spa waters.
Where to go and what to do
Wet snowy or dry there is always something to do and somewhere to go, winter or summer from Lescale. For the outdoor types there is swimming, walking cycling, horse riding, rafting, canoing and gliding. There is an abundance of a wide range of wild life with many species of birds, butterflies and wild flowers which are rare or non existant in the UK. Golden Eagles have frequently been seen and heard from the doors of the Chalet as have other raptors and a range of passerines. Also the Chateaux at Montsegur and Chalabre together with the walled City of Carcassonne so graphically described in Dan Brown's book's The Da Vinci Code, Angels and Demons and others such as Kate Mosse's The Labyrinth and Michael Baigent, Richard Leigh and Henry Lincoln's The Holy Grail are within easy reach.
This year Puivert is on one stage of the Tour de France, but there are frequently mountain finishes within a reasonable drive from the Chalet.
I have owned and rented this beautiful property for over 10 years.

Stunning property set in the Pyrenees
The entire holiday went smothly from booking to our last day. The location was perfect for us, as we wanted peace, beauty and an unspoilt part of France to explore - Le Chalet gave us all of this. Only about 20 mins drive from a supermarket where you can stock up and then hunker down back in Puivert. Part we loved the most was exploring the pine forest trails as trodden by the heroic Macais during WWII. Next time we visit I will definely try the glider expereince through the valley, and we will be back!!!
We were due to stay at this property for 4 weeks as part of a European tour. We knew as soon as we got there that it was uninhabitable. The health and safety conditions were dangerous for us and our children - mould on the walls, a decking area that was very unsafe (but had to be used to reach the front door), mice droppings everywhere, grease and grime on the extractor fan, food under the sofa cushions, ripped sofas, broken oven, rotting food in the cupboards, even human excrement in the children's potty in one room. The smell was overwhelming at times, something to do with the sewers I think judging by the smell. On the really bad days we could not stay in the villa at all. We immediately started looking for alternative accommodation and found something available for 2 week's later - we managed 12 days and on the last night the rats appeared (rats, not mice) in our bedroom and we had to plug the hole with a bath towel. We managed to get a refund for half of our stay but no compensation over having to stay there while we waited for our alternative accommodation to be ready. VRBO/HomeAway could only pass on the details but could not help us get any compensation either (not sure what their guarantee is about...). The property only has 2 useable bedrooms, the space upstairs in the loft was too small even for our 4foot high son and, in the Summer, the temperature up there got above 100 degrees. It also states on the site that it is a pet-free holiday home - this is not the case and there were dog toys available in the lounge and pet hair on the sofas! Beware of you have an allergy. Absolutely devastated to have had this experience. Although the owner tries to assist from America, the only decent thing he could have done was return all of the money we paid, which he didn't. We showed him a video and photos of the property to alert him to the current state but I see that it is still available to rent out. I hope that the problems have been seen to, otherwise it will be a terrible experience for the next renters. VRBO have all of the up-to-date photos - not the same as what is advertised on the website - and I am happy to provide photos if anybody would like them. This property needs to be removed from all of the websites it uses until all of the problems have been fixed.
In March of 2009, I spent a delightful 5 days at
“Le Chalet” with several friends. The weather was
unusually warm and gorgeous for that time of the
year, so not only did we enjoy picnics by the lake
close by, but even ventured on a one day ski trip
to Ax-les-Thermes and a wonderful hike to the very
top of the castle of Montsegur! “Le Chalet” is
perfectly located in a scenic French village near
Puivert, complete with a lake, church and old
chateau nearby. Colette Gouvion summed up
perfectly the special atmosphere which pervades
Puivert when she wrote in “Chateaux et Sites du
Moyen Age”: “In the Languedoc, there are chateaux
that cry out, but Puivert sings”. For all of us,
time seemed to have come to a screeching halt
during our stay... we agreed that we felt that we
had jumped back in time. Our five days seemed
endless, while enjoying peace in the foothills of
the Pyrenees, rest in this very comfortable chalet,
and amazing French food and wine! The fond
memories of unforgettable serenity amidst the
surrounding countryside of Lescale will never leave
me. The numerous cows were my favorite, especially
when they wandered on your front lawn! “Le Chalet”
is definitely the place to relax, to enjoy winter
and summer sports, to appreciate fine French wine
and cuisine, to visit medieval towns and castles
and to "step back in time"!
