Welcoming home in beautiful neighborhood

We stayed in this lovely house for three days over the winter holidays and loved every minute of it. The home was warm and inviting, and a great launching pad for our visit to Austin, as it seems to be close to just about everything! The neighborhood is beautiful and quiet and everyone is so friendly. The owner was super accommodating and helpful and made sure we had everything we needed. We are a family of three, with an 18-year-old son, and we felt totally at home--I wish we could have stayed longer! Everything was clean and neat and worked well, the beds were comfortable, and the bathroom was spotless. We didn't get to spend any time in the backyard because it was too cold, but it is large and looked like a great place to hang out. I'd visit again in a heartbeat.

Fantastic house in an amazing location!

I'm so glad I was able to find this place! I needed a place to stay for about a week while I was in Austin for work and I couldn't have been happier with my stay here.

The bed was comfortable, the linens were clean and fresh and the patio was perfect for sitting outside in the evening while I enjoyed the free bottle of wine that was waiting for me when I arrived.

The neighborhood is awesome. The neighbors I saw outside were super friendly, there's a grocery store just around the corner and, most importantly, a Starbucks that was only 2 minutes away.

I noticed a couple of poor reviews from a few years ago so I was a little concerned but whatever problems people had in the past, the owner clearly took action and made the necessary updates. She was very friendly, accommodating and so easy to deal with. After my first night's stay, she checked in with me to make sure I had everything I needed (which I did).

I made sure to get the owner's contact information so I could stay here again the next time I'm in Austin for work or for one of the many festivals I like to travel here to attend. Getting downtown from this home is so easy and convenient.

Thanks for having me and I'll be back!

Awesome house in great location!

What a wonderful place to stay! House was clean, everything worked great! The beds are comfortable and the house has all of the amenities one would need. It is great for a couple or a couple with a child.

They even had fresh flowers and a bottle of wine waiting for us!

The neighborhood cannot be beat! One of the most desirable in Austin, and walking distance to restaurants, the lake, a library and a bus stop! Only a few minutes to downtown and all of the action, yet the neighborhood is super quite and peaceful.

The owners must have fixed everything because I cannot imagine what the past reviewers (from a couple of years ago) were complaining about!

Highly recommend!

Stayed in wonderful home for month of January 2012

I am a single woman who wanted to find a safe neighborhood that was centrally located. This was the best place I could have found. It had everything I needed for the month of January. I felt like I was not alone and that the neighbors were nearby in case of any emergencies, not to mention the regular communication I had with the owner who made sure I was comfortable. I thought the appliances were fine and that I could store my groceries and food in the kitchen with enough space to cook. I checked the other parts of the room, including the windows and light fixtures, especially the bathroom fixtures and everything functioned properly. The owner had just cleaned the rugs as well as the house so the smelled and looked very clean. I am a neat freak so I checked out the bathroom, family room and kitchen and everything was in proper shape to welcome me. I felt very comfortable sleeping in the bedroom at night, the mattress was wonderful! I was able to feel safe coming and going and felt especially safe in the backyard, which is larger than some other plots of land I have seen here in Austin. The furniture on the back deck was in good shape, you just have to remember to take off the coverings when it rains. There is a grill in the backyard and much privacy to host friends for a BBQ or a nice outdoor meal. I am trying to stay here for the month of February but it seems to be in demand already!

Still needs major updating

We stayed in this house for three months. Tarrytown is a nice neighborhood. I agree with Susan's review, although some improvements have been made. The owner gave us a new set of kitchen knives when we arrived and the towels seemed new. The rest of the bedding needs updating especially the sheets and pillows. The mattress is of lower quality but it gets the job done. The cookware is dreadful. We ate out most of the time. In all fairness to the owner she asked us repeatedly if everything was alright. Since she was living in the home when not renting it I felt awkward about complaining to her about her stuff. We pretty much went with the flow because we knew this was temporary. When we did alert her to a problem with the dryer she fixed it promptly.

The deck furniture is badly stained/mildewed/torn. Yuk. We put towels over the chairs. Several windows don't open and the ones that do have holes in the screens.

Be aware that Austin is suffering from a terrible drought and there are restrictions as to when you can water the lawn. If you sign a lease you will be responsible for watering the lawn and shrubs. We were asked to water the lawn for 6 hours every Sunday(3 in the morning and 3 at night) by moving the sprinkler around the yard. Some people who are renting may find that that is an imposition. When I mentioned that I may not be able to water the lawn at the scheduled time the owner suggested I ask the neighbor to do it. I would not have felt comfortable asking the neighbor. The owner also asked us to leave the hose on a trickle overnight at the base of the trees. We did not do this because it would not have been legal. We tried to get the owner to split the water bill with us but it was in our lease that we had to pay the water bill.

I would advise future renters to verify with the owner that at least some of these items have been addressed. Otherwise this house is not competitive with similar homes in Austin.

I am happy to address your concerns: 1. 1.I bought two sets of brand new sheets for both beds a month before you moved in. The sheets are new. 2. I agree that the pillows needed updating and have bought new ones. 3. I, personally, think that bed is very comfortable, but I have come to realize that mattress firmness is a very personal preference. Some have loved it while others have not. 4. I bought a new set of silverware the first week you were there. 5. The cookware is a full set of Revere Ware – which is high quality cookware. Others have commented positively about the cookware. 2. Thank you for acknowledging that we are responsive and attentive to your needs (often checking to see if you needed anything). 3. Your assumption about us living in the home is incorrect. We have been living in another home. We only return to our home in the summers. 4. The patio furniture is teak, and therefore looks worn. We will clean it before Spring, as we do every year. I bought a brand new patio umbrella for you. 5. My handyman, checked the windows and screens. Of the 24 windows, there are two that are difficult to open, but work, and one in the kitchen that does not open (we will get that fixed). There is ONE screen slightly torn. 6. Watering the yard is a standard part of every lease contract. Watering restrictions required water only one day a week. I am not sure what you are referring to about illegal watering. Hand watering of tress is allowed, and encouraged. Texas lost literally tens of thousands of trees to the drought this past year and keeping them watered is important. We have owned the home for 10 years and know our neighbors well and they had offered to help with the yard watering if needed. I made sure that you were introduced to them so that you would feel welcome. 7. I feel you left out what is really upsetting you – the pet deposit. You were adamant about your disapproval of our retention of $100 of your $2745 in deposits (rental and pet deposit combined). This was retained to alleviate the pet smell from your dog, which took quite a lot of work to rectify. This was out of consideration for future guests – I am sure you would have wanted us to do the same for you. Keeping the house clean and smelling nice is of utmost importance for our guests. Unfortunately, due to this experience, I have decided to no longer allow pets.

Needs major updating

My husband and I stayed at this rental with our two young children. We found the best part of the house was the location. It is centrally located with easy access to the expressway. We did not feel like we did a lot of driving because we were close to all our favorite spots and our family who lives in both south Austin and Round Rock.

However, there were many things we did not like with this house. The house smelled of dogs, we had to spray febreeze every day in order to get control of the smell. The owner said they had changed the filter 30 minutes prior to our arrival. I believe the smell was still in the rugs and vents, and since they probably had not run the AC since they moved out then the smell was still there once we turned it on.

There were electrical wires in the dining room in two places on the floor. I had to constantly redirect my 20 month old daughter away from them. This was not kid friendly at all. The owner said we could unplug them but would loose wifi and satellite capabilities.

When we turned on the bath tub, brown water would come out first. The owner said they had never had that problem until they installed new fixtures, which I suppose was right before we arrived. They were going to call the plumber after we checked out. Would have been nice to have been informed of problem prior to booking or fix it prior to our arrival. This was very inappropriate.

The house needs to be updated in order to compete with other rentals in the area because the sheets and towels were old, mismatched, and used. The kitchen knives were dull, the teflon on the pots/pans was worn off making cooking difficult, the kitchen supplies were just thrown in the drawers. We even found an old baby's bottle, a measuring cup that was cracked, and tarnished silver wear. The towel rack in the bathroom was broken, we were instructed not to put any weight on it. The blinds were dingy, the windows didn't lock all the way. We found dog poo in the children's play area.

This house has so much potential. I believe the owners have a great opportunity to have a successful rental. BUT they need to take out all the junk, buy new linens, buy new kitchen supplies, organize the kitchen, clear out the clutter, and fix all the problems we came across. They should start by viewing other rentals so they can get an idea of what others are doing. They might be surprised how much work they have to get their house up to par.

Regarding the child-friendliness: our advertising the house as child-friendly means mostly that children are welcome and that the house is well-equipped with back-yard play-house and play area, crib, high-chair and toys. There are indeed wires and electrical outlets in the home, but every home has those. I am sorry it was a distraction for your child, but we don't know what we could possibly do to correct that. The owner has raised a child there (now 3 years old) and the power cords have never been an issue for her, so we didn’t anticipate that being a problem. We didn’t buy new sheets and towels for the guests because we figured people with children would not want to worry about being charged for damages to fine linens when they travel. So, the linens are not new, but they are always clean and you don't have to stress out about them. We knew it was going to be a cold weekend so we put the flannel sheets on the bed for you. They are a couple of years old, but are comfortable and warm. I am happy to buy new sheets and towels and give future guests a choice. Thanks for the suggestion. We had new plumbing fixture installed and, in general, often right after they are installed, the water is a bit brown for the first five seconds or so. But we will definitely have a plumber come out and see if they can fix that. The bathroom does feature a new deluxe multi-function wand rain showerhead, which we hope is appreciated. Both the landscaper and the owner checked the yard for dog poop the day before you came. We’re very sorry we missed one! We’re very grateful that you chose to stay with us and that you had so many positive things to say about the lasting features of the house. We’ll do our best to address the things you were not pleased with and thank you sincerely for your feedback.
