Misleading ad and disappointing stay

  • 1 of 5

We have stayed at Snowshoe every winter for the past ten years or so but always stayed at Snowshoe managed properties and never encountered a misleading ad nor had a problem with any of the various condos we have rented- until now. This was a last minute rental and the first and only property we came upon that was available upon learning Snowshoe had several inches of snow last weekend and deciding to head there that day for the weekend. Had I researched further, I would have seen a previous review with similar complaints. This ad is misleading in numerous ways- the 2 bedroom is far from being one of the most spacious on the mountain, the sofa bed is absolutely unuseable as a bed- you can feel every coil and the mattress slopes downward. I have never encountered anything so bad. I complained to the rental manager as this place cannot sleep more than 4 and my 73 year old father that is a camper and often sleeps in a tent in the woods was unable to even sleep on the sofa bed. Her response was that no one else had complained before and she offered nothing more. The fireplace is fake- the ad lists there is wood available yet the fireplace is a plug in unit that merely lights up - there is no heat whatsoever. The blankets were old and nubby and actually visibly dirty and too disgusting to use. The kitchen was not stocked enough to even cook a single meal. There was not a single pot holder nor dish cloth and the large pan suitable to cook in was scratched immensely and would not sit flat on the stove top. The granite counters are beautiful but the cabinets are old and scratched up, the dishwasher not properly secured and bangs forward every time the dishwasher door is opened, and several sinks/drains are clogged and drain so slowly you are left with a puddle immediately. The soaring eagle lift is within walking distance but not when wearing ski boots and carrying skis and poles. I did not encounter a single person all weekend that didn't opt to either take the shuttle or drive to the soaring eagle - which by the way, has far nicer and larger rooms. This lodge is very loud and not heated except for the individual rooms so it is a freezing trip to the 2 hot tubs or anywhere else outside of your room. Spend a little more and use management that is accountable and gives you what they state.

Owner's Response: I have had guests in this unit all winter most of them a party of 6. This is the 1st complaint that I received all season. The unit is approximately 888 square feet. Master bedroom has a private bath. Both bedrooms are newly furnished. The entire unit was remodeled in the fall of 2016. The resident manager checked the sinks and all sinks are working fine. I sent the resident manager to the unit to address some of her concerns Jacquelyn was not there. Her father kept apologizing for his daughter. If you would like pic.s of all of the cookware in the unit I can send them to you. Enough said. Please read the other reviews.

very good

Could use a few more upgrades but overall nice. Would have liked to have been little closer to the slope. A little hard to get gear and supplies to your room.

Owner's Response: This unit was recently painted. Has all new appliances and a granite countertop. New garbage disposal and faucet for the kitchen sink. Also has all new bedroom furniture in both bedrooms and a new sleeper sofa. The building has an elevator and is walking distance to the Soaring Eagle Express lift.

Nicely updated condo, great location!

  • 4 of 5

I have stayed in this condo building before, and love the proximity to the Screaming Eagle lift and Top of the World. This was my first time in this unit, which has just been renovated and looks great! The pictures in the posting now are all of the actual unit, showing the amenities that are there. The kitchen had a good assortment of items for us to cook our own meals. Unfortunately for us, there was no snow for NYE this year, and only a handful of beginner runs were open, but we went for some nice walks on the access trails, took the shuttle to the village, and spent several evenings playing board games and eating meals in at the condo!

FYI: All the wood burning fireplaces in the condo complex have been removed, so any post that says they have one is outdated. The hot tubs are shared, but we were always able to find space, and the other guests were very friendly. Quiet hours are strictly enforced.

Good basic condo, well maintained

  • 4 of 5

I started looking for a place to stay at Snowshoe very last minute--the night before our arrival. It was spring break week so there weren't many places left, and Shirley was wonderful. She responded within the hour to my initial request, and we had the contract signed and confirmed another hour later. She called to make sure that I had no questions and did everything possible to confirm the booking quickly. Gold star!

The condo itself was fine. The photos in the listing are not quite accurate--a few of them are of the unit itself but not all of them. The green couch photo that is the main photo is not of this unit. It was a very basic but clean place. It could use a little updating--there was peeling wallpaper revealing older layers of wallpaper, carpet that was fraying. Some Snowshoe condos are clearly the owner's home away from home; this was definitely not a place like that. I don't mean that in a bad way, just that there are no stacks of board games or paperbacks like you might expect. There's a TV with a DVD/VCR combo and Wifi. You're on you own for entertainment, so come prepared.

The kitchen is pretty standard for a vacation rental--plenty of plates, basic pots and pans, and strangely only one wine glass. The check-in info says that no condiments are provided, and they're not kidding. We were expecting at least an abandoned salt and pepper set, but there was nothing at all. I was warned, and thankfully I brought that with me. There is one mediocre/overpriced general store on the mountain with a very basic selection. If you plan to do any cooking at all then bring your own groceries, including beer/wine (unless you drink Bud or similar. Plenty of that available.)

The bedrooms themselves are decent sized, and there is a lot of storage--two large armoires per room. Four people could stay very comfortably. Technically it sleeps six with the sleeper sofa, but that would be a tight fit in the winter with everyone's ski gear. Summer would be fine, though.

Would I stay here again? Sure, probably. The price is reasonable for the area, and the Snowcrest complex is a decent base for a Snowshoe stay.

Falsely Advertised and Poor Management

  • 2 of 5

When I originally contact Shirley for the condo, she promptly e-mailed me back and blocked off the weekend we requested. She sent me a payment request without a contract and the amount was almost double the cost that was on the website to reserve!I e-mailed her back immediately to correct the cost issue and asked for her phone number to figure this out with ease of conversation. It took a few days for her to get back to me so we looked for other condos for the meantime. Once she sent an updated payment request, the amount was still a couple hundred dollars higher than what was agreed upon and I asked for her phone number again.Again, we were ignored for the phone number so things started to seem a bit off like it may be a scam.We ignored it and she sent the correct amount contract and we remitted payment.I asked for her phone number for the 3rd time explaining that I would like to have it in case I need to contact her during our stay for any reason. She ignored it and untrusting the situation we had already paid the full amount and went to snowshoe. There were 6 of us that headed up to Snowshoe for Presidents Day weekend and decided to stay at Snowcrest. We were aware that check-in wasn’t available until 5pm so we skied the whole day and got to the Condo right after 5pm.We entered in the provided code to the condo multiple times thinking we may not be doing something right..after an hour or so we had to knock on neighbors doors borrow their phone to contact Shirley, who didn’t answer after a few tries and the other point of contact whom didn’t answer after a few tries either. We were able to track down the residential manager who was very helpful and overrode the lock to let us in.The condo manager gave me Shirley’s phone number and told me this is not the first time she’s either forgot to give renters the right code or double booked!!I called Shirley and she forgot to tell me that she reset the code to another number before we arrived! The condo was falsely advertised and said there is a Wood Burning Fireplace and “Firewood is conveniently located in a building in the parking lot”! There is NO wood burning fireplace!!There is an electric wood piece that lights up when plugged into the wall, does not emit heat whatsoever! The windows in the condo have cracks in them covered by duct tape, the windows on the patio didn’t open up and were cracked. The hot water for the showers lasted about 10 minutes. Also, only 1 of the 4 hot tubs was in working condition.I would onl
