Overview

About the property

House, 1 Bedroom , 1.5 Baths, (Sleeps 2)

Our romantic, colorful home, Casa Soleada ("Sunny House") with its salt water pool, surrounded by bougainvillea and hanging vines, is the perfect escape for a couple searching for a fun filled vacation.

Casa Soleada is nestled into a hillside above the Pacific Ocean and offers you a modern Mexican design, great comfort, stunning ocean views, and a lush tropical garden with two decks and a dip pool (2.5 meters x 3 meters). Our home is a splendid place to watch migrating humpback whales, vivid jungle birds, and dazzling sunsets.

We built Casa Soleada in 2001, with the help of an imaginative local architect who has now added the pool and decks among the palm trees and bougainvillea. Placed at the north end of Sayulita Bay, among other beautifully designed homes, and facing west, we're about a 15 minute walk to the village of Sayulita. From our home you'll benefit from the serenity, superb views, and easy access (three minute walk) to the north end (quiet end) of the beach.

The same talented architect has recently completed a casita in the garden. The casita is NOT rented, you do not have to share your privacy or the pool with anyone else. And, you may use the deck of the casita to view birds and other gifts of nature. Built up over the jungle it's almost a tree house -- we call it El Nido, The Nest.

Casa Soleada offers outdoor living with security. The living area and palapa (coned shaped palm roof) dining area are open to the ocean breeze, but safely placed high above the garden. Since we began renting Casa Soleada in 2003, no guest has ever lost anything from this house. Not once!

Our large air conditioned bedroom, with a firm queen-size bed and beautiful wooden closets, has screened and barred windows, and unbreakable glass doors and windows.

Other features you will love about Casa Soleada include our mosaic outdoor shower off the main bath, and our bougainvillea surrounded balcony, perfect for margaritas or moon gazing.

The pretty blue tiled kitchen has an island, good cookware, and all major appliances. And Casa Soleada's colorful art and furnishings are of Mexican and South American design, enhanced by photographs of Mexico.

Sayulita is still a charming fishing village, but becoming discovered by tourists; that means we have all the services you'll be searching for. Very good shops, dozens of restaurants, cafes, excellent artists, and a wide variety of activities from Spanish lessons at the bookstore, to surfing lessons on the beach, to zip lines, horse back riding, and eco-tourism in the jungle.

If you reserve Casa Soleada for more than one week (8 nights or longer) we will send a driver to Puerto Vallarta airport to meet your flight. He'll put you and your bags in the van, take you grocery shopping, and delivery you to Casa Soleada, FREE.

About Cynthia Gillespie-Smith

We are a retired English/American couple who "found" Sayulita in the late 90s when Cynthia ran a photography workshop in Mexico. In the year 2000, we came to Sayulita to spend the winter ~ before we left we'd bought property, contacted a wonderful local architect, and drew up plans for Casa Soleada. We spend much of each winter here ~ otherwise we travel or live in Bandol, France, where this photo was made. We also rent our house near Aix-en-Provence.

Cynthia Gillespie-Smith purchased this house in 2001

Why Cynthia Gillespie-Smith chose Sayulita

In 2000, Sayulita was a quiet and almost unknown fishing village north of the resort town, Puerto Vallarta. While we've seen a lot of changes in Sayulita, most of them are positive, and in our neighborhood, the far north end of town, life remains peaceful. We have the choice of joining in the activity of Sayulita or remaining in the calm, tropical atmosphere of our home.

What makes this house unique

We love walking in the jungle and along the beach, especially the quiet north end. From our balcony we watch humpback whales, exotic birds, and admire the extraordinary sunsets Mother Nature gives us. Then we can walk or drive into town for dinner. Evenings are busy in Sayulita ~ many shops are open and there's a special positive energy not found many places.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thanks for sharing your beautiful home. The art, gardens and views are all quite special. Lots of wildlife.

Great stay for couples

  • 4 of 5

The house was very clean, comfortable, and well decorated. I had great communication with the property owner and manager. Really enjoyed the views from the bedroom and the sounds of insects/geckos at night. Note, there is a home next door that is under construction (roughly 9:30am - 7pm). This was not a problem since we were at the beach all day. WIFI can be spotty if you are dependent on it for work/communication. Both of the notes above are not in the host's control! We didn't rent a golf cart and actually enjoyed the walk up the hill, but that might not be suitable for everyone. Overall, had a great time at the house and Sayulita!

Owner's Response: We're really glad you had a lovely time at Casa Soleada and in Sayulita in general. Fortunately the nearby construction is almost over and the loudest noise to contend with will be the waves and the birds. Generally the internet works well in Sayulita; when it doesn't it can be irritating for sure. But again, problems with it are quite rare.

Perfect romantic getaway in North Sayulita

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed at Casa Soleada for 5 nights in February 2018 as a last solo getaway before the arrival of our first baby. We booked just a few weeks out, and were so lucky that this beautiful gem of a house was available. The property really made our vacation.

The photos looked great, but the house is even better in person. The interior part of the home is a single story nestled in the hillside, basically a long skinny rectangle with a nice flowing layout that includes multiple different spots to hang out and enjoy the views. We loved waking up to see the sunrise over the ocean right from bed, and it became our ritual to watch the sunset from the outdoor shower. The main level of the house overlooks the garden and pool area, which are beautifully lush with dragon flies and birds flitting around, and provided a nice mix of sunny and shady spots to lay out.

The location on the North side of Sayulita was great as it's a bit quieter than Gringo hill, where we've stayed previously, but still a short distance to the town center. We rented a car for our time there, but chose to walk into town on a few days. Having the vehicle was nice but I wouldn't consider it necessary this time of year, especially since a cool dip in the pool was extra enjoyable after working up a sweat on the return uphill.

The house manager, Ernesto, was very accommodating when we arrived late due to a flight delay. He speaks English with perfect fluency, so visitors who don't speak Spanish should rest assured he will make arrangements very easy on them! Since our cell phones didn't work as promised by Verizon, we found it easiest to communicate with him by email, which he always replied to within a few minutes.

Owner's Response: This happy guest describes our house extremely well; for a small house it has many, many places to put oneself to enjoy the sun, the vegetation, and the smashing views. We, the owners, could not come to Mexico this winter, and I think it's breathtaking sunsets and moon sets I miss the most! Ernesto can easily arrange golf carts and other options, but for those who like a stroll we're close enough to town to avoid renting wheels of any kind. It's a great little house in a splendid location!

Magical slice of Sayulita

  • 5 of 5

Casa Soleada is the perfect place for a relaxing retreat. Just the right size for two. The space is intimate yet spacious because of the open design. Daytime, we enjoyed the sun, the ocean and jungle all from the privacy of the casita - and amazing moons at night. For beaches, the closest one was definitely less crowded than the main beach - and the beach in San Pancho was busy but low key - a great combo for us.

Cynthia (owner) and Ernesto (local manager) were flexible and accommodating. We went “full service” with a prearranged ride from the airport - stop at the market included - and a golf cart. Options are good!

This was our first visit to Sayulita and we would definitely return. The casita has soul and made our trip really special. I am usually open to trying new places but something tells me Casa Soleada is hard to beat.

Owner's Response: I am delighted when people tell me how much they've enjoyed our charming Casa Soleada. It's so close to nature's birds and beaches, yet safe, comfortable, and open. As owners we've seen a lot of new houses spring up, and there are few little gems that compare with Casa Soleada.

Amazing view February 4-10 2018

  • 5 of 5

My wife and I enjoyed our stay at Casa Soleada. Ernesto met us on arrival and let us know he was available if any issues came up and provided so suggestions on where to go in town for groceries. He even arranged a taxi to pick us up for departure. The view from any room in the house overlooked the Pacific Ocean and was amazing to hear the sound of the crashing surf even as far up from the shore as the house is. All the basic requirements (other than the food) were found in the kitchen to prepare our meals, we did choose to prepare more meals than eat out.

We did have an issue with the tap leaking in the bathtub but Ernesto fixed that within half an hour of being informed and there were no further issues. A previous review did mention construction noise. While we found we had privacy at the house due to the extensive vegetation, there was some noise that comes from being in a neighborhood. We did not find the construction noise to be excessive and was actually quieter than some of the birds at sunrise and sunset.

We opted to not get a golf cart but if you have mobility issues it would be required as the immediate area around the house has very steep hills and it is a bit of a hike to the stores and shops, but if the house was not up where it is the view would also not be as amazing.

Overall, if we were to return to Sayulita we would definitely check for the availability of this house before booking anything else, both Ernesto and Cynthia were very accommodating and easy to deal with.

Pretty Location... Property needs a lot of maintenance

  • 2 of 5

The good: Beautiful view overlooking the ocean. House has a lot of potential, but years of degradation have left a mark, which brings me to …

The bad: Very worn out property. The house had a pervasive feeling of uncleanliness. Examples from the bedroom: The sheets had rips and holes in them and looked like they had not been cleaned in a while. Extremely old lumpy pillows with no bounce back, and no additional pillows to choose from. We were provided a couple of towels with no extras unless we asked. No extra blanket for the bed except for the thin dusty cover on top of the bed. Examples from the kitchen: The fridge was not clean. The knives are old and you’ll be hard pressed to find one with a sharp edge. The glasses had a lingering smell of drinks from past guests…we decided to rewash everything before use. Examples from the bathroom: The main bathroom had an overwhelming smell of sewage with doors open or not. The bath/shower leaks to the point that the floor gets soaked. (The bath tub has no shower curtain (by the way)…) Your other option is the outside shower … The outside faucet also leaks, and it takes a while for the warm water to arrive, but outside we were not worried about flooding the floor. Another issue for us was a lack of privacy of the shower area – you’d expect some of that of course, but the next door construction workers had a clear view of us every day we showered.

Speaking of next door construction… Work began every morning at 8-8:30am with a combination of sledge hammers and metal cutting tools that really got us going every morning for our vacation. Who needs to sleep in? Not us… By the way…No mention of this (or the potential for this) was on the rental description when we booked the property. We think that’s a party foul, so we’re making sure we bring it up here!

On arrival, nobody was there waiting for us… everything was locked. We spent about 15 minutes wondering what next … luckily we found the key to the property hung at the outside light bulb. The front door handle was broken and kept falling…

For $140 a night, I had higher expectations mainly related to the minimum cleanliness… I will be back to Sayulita but I will not be staying at this property. To be fair, there is a property manager Ernesto who kept mainly to himself. We didn’t really reach out to him to remedy anything, except we asked for a couple of extra towels which he promptly brought over.

Best of luck!

Owner's Response: I agree that this guest found our house in an unhappy state, and she has the right to point this out. These issues are important and have now been addressed and quickly put right. At the same time she has been unfair to complain that our busy property manager was not there to greet her as she arrived 2 hours late without contacting him. And as the shower is surrounded by wooden poles I do wonder how her privacy has been compromised. The house is now back in it's 5 star rating state and will remain so.

Perfect Hideaway

  • 5 of 5

This bungalow was the perfect choice for our short stay in Sayulita. Cynthia worked with us to accommodate our tight schedule. The property manager Ernesto provided superior service - even arranged for a golf cart to be delivered to the house for us. Walkable to the beach and town but so much more fun to ride around in the cart! Sunsets are magical from the deck and the pool is wonderful to cool down after a hot day. Thanks again Cynthia and Ernesto!
