Photos and Description of this 1 bedroom holiday cottage in Kyoto - Shirakawa Cottage

Cottage, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath (Sleeps 2)

Shirakawa means White Stream hence ‘Cottage by the White Stream’

Shirakawa Cottage is a traditional Japanese Machiya (Townhouse)in an absolutely superb location in an alleyway off the Shirakawa Stream, one of the loveliest areas in Kyoto This ensures that that the house is completely quiet yet allowing immediate access to the middle of Kyoto’s historical Higashiyama district. Guests can return, relax, have a rest, shower, sleep, change clothes or have a cup of tea while still remaining in the historical area. The house is small, one bedroom with a double bed, that looks through to a stunning Japanese moss garden. It has been lovingly restored in the traditional style of an old Kyoto Teahouse and furnished with antiques along with modern amenities like air-conditioning, western toilet and modern kitchen. It is fully equipped with a hairdryer, linen, iron, towels, washing machine and dryer, everything you need to make your stay comfortable and enjoyable.

Non Smoking House!

Really superb location: The cottage has a selection of DVD's and internet connection for your computer. Shirakawa is 2 mins from the main historical Nene's Path. The traditional Geisha district of Gion is 4 min walk along the edge of the Shirakawa Stream. Also the upmarket restaurant area of Pontocho along the banks of the Kamagawa River is an easy stroll. This whole area is flat and an easy walk and as with all Kyoto is quiet and perfectly safe. Fifteen minutes walk are the Higashiyama mountains that have superb hiking. The nearby International Community House (INCH) (9.00am-9.00pm) has internet, a huge TV with CNN, daily Japanese language classes and weekly calligraphy, ink painting, origami etc classes in English for ¥50 (fifty cents). It also has a large library with daily English edition Japanese newspapers as well as weekly American, English, Australian newspapers available. There is a coffee shop and a huge notice board as well as an information center.

Owner Description/Comments: As guests at Shirakawa cottage, you can benefit not only from the great setting of the house, but also from your hosts’ extensive knowledge and experience of tourism and travel in Japan – Avi and Wendy also own and run “Windows to Japan”, a specialist tour agency which opens authentic, soul stirring windows to Japan for independent travelers. Delightful cottage - Fantastic location

  • 5 of 5

Shirakawa Cottage is a cosy two-room cottage in the heart of Kyoto. It's a wonderful base to explore Kyoto as the location is terrific. There's so much nearby, but it's still so peaceful at night. The walk down the little lane-way and past the "White Stream" is also a charming way to start the morning. You could even leave your guidebook at home as there are several excellent books and other information on-hand in the cottage.

Rory is a friendly and very considerate host. The renovation work inside the cottage is lovely and the bed is very comfortable. It's spotlessly clean, and the neighborhood is completely safe at night. We had a lovely time staying here and recommend it highly. We hope to stay longer next time.

Owner's Response: Thankyou very much Robyn. I'm glad you enjoyed your stay and yes the White Stream is very pretty. I am working hard at the moment compiling a folder of 'other information on hand' for guests. Kyoto Through Blue Eyes -.hidden places, hike trails , restaurants &cafes and so on.

Great location

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect spot and I'm glad I chose to stay here. I could easily walk around to a lot of places and it was right near Higashiyama Station, which was useful. The cottage was cute and had everything I needed for my short stay there - I wish it was longer! Any questions that I had before my trip were answered quickly and if I needed anything during my stay, I was made to feel like I could ask anything. I'd highly recommend staying here.

Fantastic Location and Cottage

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I spent one wonderful week at Shirakawa Cottage, and it was the perfect base for our first visit to Japan and Kyoto. Located on a quiet lane in Southern Higashiyama, we could walk to many sights, including downtown, a multitude of beautiful temples, the Geisha district, restaurants, and more. There is a subway station close by and it's a short ride to the train station. The cottage was very comfortable and the booking process very easy and efficient. I hope to stay at Shirawaka Cottage again!

Excellent Location!

  • 4 of 5

This charming machiya could not be better located. Just steps from the Shirakawa River, the machiya is close to the subway, bus lines, good restaurants, and interesting and beautiful attractions. The Gion district is an easy walk. Wendy's staff is very responsive. The only reason I did not give this cottage a 5 was that storage space is a bit tight for 2 people (we were there for 3 weeks). If you need more storage space, try the same owners' Jizo-An machiya, just a few blocks away.

Notes:
Not Suitable for Children. Minimum Age Limit for Renters. Its great location makes up for its small size. It really is perfect for a 1 or 2 week stay in Kyoto. There is internet access available your computer. There is a selection of Japan related DVDs. Shirakawa Cottage has lots of maps and information on sights and things to do in Kyoto and we are more than happy to help guests plan their itineraries. The kitchen is simple and very clean; kettle, toaster, microwave coffee maker, refrigerator ideal for making breakfast or simple meals. Lunch and dinner is best eaten at the many nearby cafes and restaurants. In Kyoto eating out is cheap, interesting and varied most people prefer to eat out.
