This is very much a family affair and this home is a labor of love. Purchasing the property in 2005, this house has been a side project and has been improved from the ground up. Everything in this house was done by family from the floors, decoration & complete creation of the concrete deck, driveway etc. This home is very close to our heart. We want other people to enjoy it as much as we have!
Sarah purchased this Cottage in 2005

great place for our purposes
We were in Rochester with two of our adult children for our niece's wedding; the cottage was only about twelve houses away from the bride's home so it was very convenient. On the last two days, it was pretty windy so the wave action was pretty impressive. The house itself was clean and well equipped, but please stock some washcloths - people need them but usually don't pack them.
Grandma's Cottage Needs a little love but others good place to stay
Stayed for two weeks in August. Enjoyed the deck, views, and neighborhood. Felt safe. The cottage is somewhat dated but overall enjoyed our stay. The kitchen, bathrooms, and open concept were updated. The bedrooms were comfortable but dated, it reminded me of staying at my grandparents house. Great location for day trips around Rochester, as well as going up to Niagara Falls and Canada. I have had two total knee replacements and could manage the climbing up to the upstairs bedrooms but the stairs were narrow given the age of the house. Coming from the Southwest where we have central air, it took us some time to get use to the individual air conditioning units located in the living room, and two of the three bedrooms. Overall we would rent again in the future.
Thanks Melissa! We are so glad you enjoyed your stay. The house is definitely like staying at Grandma’s which is the exact atmosphere we were going for to cherish the charm of this
Century home with some updating also. We purchased quite a few antique pieces to give the old world look with a mix of new beds, sofas and dining. Cheers!
Lake Ontario is your front yard
If you're looking for a vacation house literally right on the water, this is it. Situated right on the water with a deck the length of the house and huge, bright, open windows, the cottage is like a viewfinder with the lens taking in the gorgeous sunrises and sunsets, boats, and birds that abound on the water. At night, the sky is so clear and the stars so bright it's like being front row in a giant planetarium. And if you enjoy fishing, you can walk through the backyard and across the street to drop a line in the bay.
Keep in mind, this is an old cottage that the owner has tried to update while keeping the structure's original bones, which leads to some quirkiness, which we didn't mind at all, but if you're looking for super modern or cookie-cutter, this place isn't for you. The stairway is narrow with short ceilings made for bumping your head on, and the stair step heights are quite high, making it a bit challenging. The bathroom floor slants downhill so you feel like you've had a few too many cocktails when walking down it, and the kitchen and closets are unique. However, we just thought it added character! And the beds were comfy, the shower huge with great water pressure and lots of natural light, and the window air conditioners kept it very cold even on the hottest of days, so no complaints there.
One thing I didn't get from the listing, there's no direct access to the water for swimming. The deck sits right out over the water but you cannot swim there as it would be too dangerous and there's wrought iron railing all the way around. You have to travel about 5 minutes by car to the beach. That's a bit of a tease, seeing all that water you can't even stick a toe in! But as long as you know that going in, you're good.
The owner, Sarah, was extremely friendly and prompt in her communication and even let us check in early. One of the nicest hosts I've encountered on VRBO. Also, the next door neighbor in the gray house on the right was extremely nice -other house up for sale and vacant. So no problems with the 'hood! Closer to many excellent shops, restaurants, etc. And for the love of God, make sure to get an ice cream at Abbott's! To die for!
Calm, Relaxing Retreat
The property was perfect for 2 couples in their sixties visiting friends. The downstairs was just right for a small afternoon gathering to catch up. We ordered food from nearby Wegmans and used mostly paper plates and cups.
We used the 2 bedrooms on the second floor, the attic bedroom is not air conditioned. You have to walk from one bedroom to get to the next but that was the only small inconvenience.
The patio was amazing with a fantastic view. We witnessed a Nor’easter with 5 foot waves on our last evening. No water got in the house and we got front row seats to a spectacle of nature. Thanks for sharing your home. Rob and Beth and George and Ruth
Not a palace
We had a great experience at the cozy Open Sky Cottage. If you are looking for a peaceful place to read, relax, and to serve as a home base for adventures, you have found a perfect vacation spot.
Be sure to read the description carefully. The house definitely has its quirks. One that I wasn’t prepared for was the lack of screens in windows, especially the room where there was no A/C.
Overall, this was exactly what we needed and we might be back next year!
The quirky cottage.
It’s exactly what we expected for a “cottage”. We had a lot of laughs. The window between the bedroom and bathroom with the curtain on the bedroom side had us in hysterics. Just beware that if you have trouble with stairs or are expecting a summer home, rather than cottage, this would not be the place for you. It is a little rough around the edges but with a view to die for. We happened to stay while the lake was approaching record high levels and it may have affected the speed of the water in the tub drain. Also, the internet router needed to be rebooted several times a day. But the place was perfect for what we needed.
Every year, thousands of tourists come to Rochester for the Lilac Festival in May. We also have numerous other local festivals including the Harbor fest, right at Ontario Lake Beach 5 minutes down the road from the cottage.
Fall has Apple Picking nearby and is a great time to enjoy a Romantic Getaway before winter. If you enjoy Cold weather activities, Ice Fishing and Ice Skating happen at the Lake, weather permitting. So there is always a lot going on in this area.
