About Kathryn McNitt
Husband John is retired from California Dept of Corrections and I am a retired Registered Nurse. Both of us love being outdoors and are blessed to have had the opportunity to acquire Watanda Lodge to share with family and friends..
Kathryn McNitt purchased this Cabin in 2002
Why Kathryn McNitt chose Nevada City
I worked at the summer camp next door for 20 years. My husband and I always wanted a vacation home on water and the opportunity to purchase Camp Watanda dropped in our lap.

Peace and Quiet
Kathy was quick to check in with is when there was an announced power outage that may have affected our trip. The cabin was charming and perfect for my family trip. The cell service is spotty and the wifi was not working (only the teenagers were frustrated). The small lake was beautiful and the views were serene.
Sorry about the WiFi. We probably needed to reboot it after the PGE outage. I should have thought of that. Thanks for the reservation and for taking good care of the place. Kathryn
Great Place, I will go back.
Nothing to say at all negative. All positive.
The beach and fire pit are a way from the site. Next time I go I will bring my propane fire pit. Cabin itself, was exactly as advertised, and better. We loved it.
Beach is shared with the lodge. I didn’t use it, but it looked nice, a lot of canoes, and various boats.
Cabin at lake vera
Great cabin and fantastic location at the lake and short drive to town.
If your looking for rest and a little bit of remembrance from a time gone by, with amenities of today - then this little place might just be it for you. Quiet nights, deer in the morning hours and frog crocking in the lake just beyond the tree line give a feeling of being deep in the forest, yet only minutes to Nevada City and Grass Valley.
Perfect Weekend Getaway
This was the perfect little getaway before the school year began. My son loved the kayaks the best. Having a grill right outside the cabin as well as one on the lake was great. We utilized both. They even had the charcoal & lighter fluid. Roasting marshmallows over the firepit late night was relaxing & fun. I only wish there were trails to hike as I like to go exploring & get a workout at the same time. I'd also suggest adding some family games as well. There are plenty of movies, but games would've been fun too. We didn't really watch much TV & when we tried one day, the DirectTV was out for a few hours. The cabin is well stocked & I loved having so many windows. The fact that there were a couple of fans was awesome too & totally unexpected! I like the white noise when I sleep as well as the cool air on me. What a pleasant surprise! Sipping coffee on the porch in the morning was calming. The kitchen is well stocked with dishes, pots & pans, down to bottle/can opener as well as a lantern which we used on our trips to the firepit at night.
The one problem we encountered ws regarding the recycables/garbage. The instructions stated to take everything to the dumpsters at the end of the driveway, however, when we tried to use them we discovered they were locked-complete with locks on them. We were forced to leave everything in the trash cans outside the cabin door. We hope the critters didn't get into them!
Overall, it's beautiful & serene. We'll definitely be back one day!
Thank you for the very nice review, the dumpsters are locked to keep the bears out but the key in dangling off the lock. It is in your arrival instructions, but I will look at that and see what I can change to make that more clear. Thank you for taking such good care of the place.
Great Nostalgia Trip
The cabin was just what I hoped for. It was clean, well appointed, and very cleverly decorated. The kitchen was well supplied with everything we needed. I especially appreciated the serious flashlight, which we used when we went stargazing by the lake. I hadn't been back to Lake Vera since I was a Camp Fire Girl at Camp Celio in the 1960s, and it was great to take a canoe out on the lake whenever we wanted. Thank you, Kathryn, for making it possible for me to enjoy summer camp once again. I hope that we'll have the opportunity to come back someday.
Thank you! I remember Celio back in the day as I worked at Camp Gold Hollow from 1988-2000
Close to winter ski trails and multiple lakes and rivers
