As you drive up to this hacienda-style estate and park your car on the sandy drive under the ancient live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, you'll know that you have arrived at a genuinely special place. The mission-style bell tower atop this 'cabana' guest house and the Spanish-style courtyard tucked away behind wrought-iron gates offer the first clues that this was formerly the site of an early 20th-century auto tycoon's Florida get-away. Originally the carriage house for the estate, the guest house just underwent a top-to-bottom renovation making it a luxurious place to stay during the 21st century. Tucked between the Indian River Lagoon and the Sebastian River in the quaint and historic Roseland community, this is a magical spot.
Perched close to the edge of the original art deco swimming pool, from certain angles the cabana appears to be floating on water. At 26 feet by 52 feet, the pool is much larger than typical private pools, and great for serious lap swimming as well as casual wading or floating. Lion fountains at each corner of the pool serve as a reminder of the unique history of this estate. Keep refreshments handy at the attached poolside cabana bar, and you’ll never want to leave the pool!
Inside, the large, open living/dining area features glass doors and windows on all four sides, lending the interior a bright and open feeling even when Florida's famous sunshine is temporarily hidden behind the clouds. Bamboo floors, colorful and casual furnishings, arched windows, and muted pastel-colored walls create a relaxing resort-style space. Two steps down from the living area, a separate, fully-equipped kitchen features ultramodern and vintage appliances, including a dishwasher, microwave hood, and water filtration system. Freshly refurbished with classic Florida materials such as turquoise glass tile, pink enamel appliances, terrazzo floor tiles, and casual white cabinetry, the kitchen boasts large windows overlooking the swimming pool, with a door for easy access to the poolside cabana bar.
A small passageway connects the living area with the bedroom, bathroom, and laundry area with washer and dryer. Built largely of glass block, turquoise tile, terrazzo, and sea glass tile accents, the bathroom glows like a jewel, shimmering and subtly changing color as the sun moves through the sky. The oversized shower is lined with turquoise glass tiles, with a frosted glass door leading to an outdoor shower under the trees.
The separate bedroom with queen-sized bed comfortably sleeps two. A pull-out sleeper sofa in the living room can accommodate two more. A unique arrangement of doors allows occupants of both the living and sleeping areas to retain their privacy while preserving access to the bathroom from either location.
This estate boasts a uniquely beautiful, natural old-Florida setting directly on the pristine and wildlife-friendly Sebastian River, just a mile upstream from the Indian River Lagoon. While lounging at the pool deck, enjoy a sweeping view of the expansive lawn, native and tropical landscaping, small private lagoon, and the river. In addition to the majestic live oaks, the mature landscaping features numerous palm trees and a wide variety of tropical plants.
The nature preserve on the opposite bank of the river ensures that you'll watch the sun set over the palms and flatlands of Florida herself, rather than over someone's condominium complex or a chain hotel. It won't be long before you see fish jumping, dolphins playing, and egrets grazing close to the riverbank.
We designed the interior of this guest house as our vacation home, and it is extraordinarily comfortable for two to four people. The attention to detail with a focus on stylishly casual comfort will set you at ease as soon as you arrive. If you should need more space than the pool house provides, for an additional fee we also offer the estate's original 1924 guest house, directly across a sandy courtyard (see #225943 at 'All My Rental Listings'). Combined, the houses offer plenty of room for family and friends.
If you’re not familiar with the Sebastian River area, you’re in for a delightful surprise. This is where manatees come to over-winter. Dolphins, birds, fish, and nature-loving humans love the Sebastian River. Pelican Island, the country's first National Wildlife Refuge, was established here over a century ago. Ever since, Sebastian has remained a place that cherishes its natural beauty and makes a special effort to preserve it.
With the Sebastian River and an inviting turquoise pool right outside your door, and with the Indian River, Intracoastal Waterway, and Atlantic Ocean only minutes away, you'll never run out of things to do here. The beaches on the barrier island, across the Indian River lagoon, are practically deserted. Take a ride on the 'Sebastian River Queen Jungle tour,' a pontoon boat tour of the Sebastian River that passes right by your boat dock, on a photo safari quest for dolphins, herons, and alligators. Like surfing? The Sebastian Inlet is one of the top spots on Florida's coast to surf. Feeling really daring? Skydive Sebastian, billing itself as 'Florida's most scenic dropzone,' is only a mile away.
If you tire of the peace and quiet, the attractions of Orlando are just an hour and a half away. Or tour the facilities of NASA's Cape Canaveral, an hour to the north. If you’re lucky enough to be here at the time of a space launch, watch the northeastern skies at launch time for a special treat.
We wish we could be here all the time! But since we can't, we hope you’ll be able to stay a while and experience what a special place this is.

We needed a place for 3 months while transitioning to the area and Glenn came to our rescue. We felt right at home from the moment we walked in the front door. The home is exactly as pictured and Glenn was always available if we had any questions or needed anything. Btw, we didn't need a thing, because he has everything in his homes. He has more kitchen supplies than a restaurant and the sheets he has are super soft, plush towels, comfy furniture, a washer and dryer, and so on. Consider it your home away from home! All you need to bring is yourself and clothes and you are set. He also recommended a few restaurants and we frequented two of them quite often. (Aunt Louise's and Wasabi Thai Sushi) I literally gained 10lbs from all the great food. Thanks Glenn! LOL!
I would highly recommend Glenn's homes if you are spending time in the area. It was totally relaxing and a great memorable time that I will treasure. Just a note.... we stayed at 3 of Glenn's homes during our stay and I have left this review for all of them, because each is equally fantastic!
Wonderful relaxing week on the river. The place is as great as the photos. Very quiet and peaceful setting in an old Florida way but it still has all the amenities you need. The pool was great and clean. My wife especially liked the indoor/outdoor shower connection. We used to come to Sebastian often and after staying at Glenn's cabana, we will certainly return. Several of the other reviews describe the cabana much better than I can and everything that was said is true. We hope to return in the near future to what my wife describes as the "perfect vacation house".
When I think of of this beautiful home I use the words relaxing, amazing, clean, comfortable, home and magical. This property in one word is "perfect"
Glenn was there to meet us when we arrived. He gave us the lay of the land and where we could find things in the rental. The house is beautiful and well cared for. It's decorated in a warm and somewhat old Florida way. That's not to say it wasn't loaded with modern amenities because it is but it is filled with a warm, funky, kitschy, bright and welcoming vibe. You instantly want to kick your shoes off and soak in all the home has to offer.
A full and well stocked kitchen with both vintage and modern appliances awaits down a step from the main living area. Two large windows overlook the amazing pool. To the left is an outdoor bar area with sink, counter tops and a grill. The kitchen has all the appliances you'll need and has all the kitchen accessories you have at home.
On the main living level (one step up from the kitchen) you'll find a nice dining area with very comfortable chairs and a living room with comfortable furniture and a television. Want to play a game? Open the old cabinet and you'll find it stocked.
The bedroom is just off the living room and has doors on both side so if you're traveling with a child you can have privacy but still be close by. We traveled with a teenager and she felt like she had her own space. She slept on the pullout sofa and said it was reasonably comfortable. The bedroom was comfortable and had plenty of places to put clothing both folded and hung. It also boasts a TV and great lighting to read by before bed. The bed while kind of bouncy was surprisingly comfortable and we slept well. Most nights we were lucky enough to be able to keep the windows open
The bathroom boasts a 1950's meets modern style with a large walk in shower and a very large, just outside the in shower door - an very nice outside shower! What a great way to start or end the day!
The pool was divine with lions on all four corners. Crystal clear water. The river is also easily accessible and we used the kayaks. Seeing dolphins while out was the highlight of our trip.
We can't wait to return. I'm already suffering withdrawals from not having coffee on the patio this morning! If you're looking for comfort and privacy you shouldn't past by this property. It's very centrally located. Close to grocery and pharmacy, restaurants and both Melbourne and Vero.
My husband and I arrived on a Friday evening after working all week. As soon as we pulled in the parking area, with our dog and boat in tow, we felt an excitement and wonder at the natural beauty of the place. Our first impressions were just the beginning of a very lovely weekend retreat. The setting is breathtaking! As you walk into the courtyard you feel you step back in time with the beautiful water-fountain centerpiece, and historic bell tower next to the front door. Walking into the cabana house is a joyful experience. The colors, and space immediately relax and welcome you. From the fresh fruit and candies on the table to the luscious vistas outside your windows you know you are in a special place. The retro decor of the house is simply fabulous! The 1928 pool with lion fountains on each corner is amazing - if that isn't enough, just beyond the pool area is a sloping green lawn leading to the beautiful Sebastian River. At once you feel all your stresses just melt away, and you know you have come to a place that nurtures your spirit and senses. Looking forward to our next stay at this unique, historic, beautiful home.
My husband and I recently visited the Cabana House for our first year anniversary. IT. WAS. PERFECT.
We were looking for a place we could get away and relax, snorkel, hike, lay on the beach, surf, and pretend we didn't really live in a big city for a week. In short, we wanted a beach vacation we could approach at our own pace without too many tourists, experience as much nature as possible without camping, and be alone with each other.
We could not have found a more perfect place to rent!
The cabana house itself is charming, beautiful and has a fabulous history. It is surrounded by live oaks dripping with Spanish moss, and a stunning variety of tropical flowers and palms. Our favorite part of staying in this house was the picturesque courtyard and the pool with lion fountains at each corner (which looked like Katherine Hepburn should be lounging by it)...there were tree frogs, anoles and birds, and an orange tree in the private terrace off the back of the cabana house. In the morning it was a perfect place to meditate as the wind gently blew through the bamboo grove. The enclosed outdoor shower was a lovely addition to the private pool, and a great place to feel the sun and breeze and see the flowers.
The beach was a short 10 minute drive away, and there are many public beaches (several are practically empty even during peak hours) with beautiful views of the Atlantic ocean, and a great place to go shelling, surfing, or take a guided turtle walk to see some endangered sea turtles laying their eggs. It is also close to the St. Sebastian Inlet where we swam with manatees, and saw a large variety of reef animals.
Just off the back of the cabana house is a large yard that leads to a dock. Fantastic place for an early morning kayak trip around the mangroves that grow there, and to see the natural oyster beds, the mullet jump and dolphins play was a huge treat! You can also sit and watch the sun set on the dock...breathtaking!
The hosts were extremely intuitive, helpful and kind...with accurate info on the best places to eat and where to shop.
We would definitely come back to this rental and stay longer. The pace of this little town is unique in itself, and encourages city dwellers to SLOW DOWN and enjoy island life for a while. We loved the quaint antique shops and eclectic boutiques to visit during the hottest parts of the afternoon.
We left unwillingly, wishing we had more time...but with great memories.
About five years ago I was searching for a unique property near the Sebastian Inlet. By chance, I came across this listing on vrbo.com and placed a call to the owner. The description in the ad sounded exactly like what I was searching for, the owner's pleasant demeanor on the phone enticed me to complete the reservation. Upon arrival we found ourselves immersed in the perfect place, exactly as described in the ad and honestly, more than we anticipated. The property is nestled on the end of a rural road with limited residences nearby. Grand oaks tower a protective shield from the days sun, branches stretching outward offering a shaded welcome. As you enter the courtyard you are greeted with a beautiful array of foliage and a trickling fountain, a soothing sound that captures your senses. The cabana's entry and interior is well lit and inviting. As you enter the residence you find a uniquely modern but stylish Old Florida abode that offers all the creature comforts with period flare to remind you of your current location. My husband, a native Floridian, reminisces as he sees the terrazzo floors in the kitchen and bath. I marvel at the blend of old and new of the interior and know I made a great decision. The pool...the pool is the largest private outdoor pool in the state and I revel in the knowledge we have this all to ourselves. We find the door that leads to a private shaded outdoor seating area and a gate that offers access to the pool area, complete with an outdoor shower. During the heat of the day, our poolside corner offers shade for most of the day with ample space to bask in the Florida sun. Watch the sky for skydivers floating to the ground at the local airstrip, listen to the hum of the trains as they pass by in the distance. When you venture past the pool into the backyard you find a large expanse of open turf and Florida landscape leading you to the river's edge adorned with a sturdy dock providing easy access for views of the sunrise and sunset, or a good spot to drop a fishing line. Multiple kayaks are available for the adventurous types. We trailer our boat, utilizing the public boat ramp just down the road about a mile or so. The Sebastian River leads us to the inter-coastal waterway and the Sebastian Inlet home of the must-visit, popular and always fun sandbar. The local town of Roseland offers antiques, groceries, and local restaurants to meet your needs. We love this spot so much, we've returned nearly every year since.
Canoeing, Birdwatching, Deep Sea Fishing, The Restaurants & Shops of Sebastian are nearby, or find a Wider Variety of Stores, & Cinemas in Vero Beach or Melbourne (each 25 minutes away).
