My hometown was Louisville, Kentucky where my family lives. I work in Real Estate in Naples and have been coming to this area since the 1960's with my family. Being a nature lover, birdwatcher, boater, and fisher girl I was drawn to the beauty of Everglades City and the Everglades.
Smith Rodes purchased this cottage in 2007
Our family fell in love with the simplicity of life on the island. We live in Naples full time and love the ease of getting here to relax.
We love the quiet and peacefulness of this island retreat, with all the natural surroundings it is truly a getaway. You can boat, fish, kayak, birdwatch, airboat, hike, take excursions in the Everglades, visit famous artist studios, dine at great historic Inns or outside casual dining or just relax on your front porch and watch nature from the front row seat. Your retreat offers wifi and business center, swimming pool, exercise facilities, recreation facility for your convenience.
We went with another couple and had the most delightful time. The cottage is absolutely private, beautifully decorated, fresh and clean, surrounded by Mother Nature. We kayaked, which were available at no charge, swam, pool within walking distance, and met the concierge who was very accommodating from the minute we arrived on the island. It is a small slice of PARADISE.
The home is beautifully decorated. Furniture is comfortable. Kitchen is adequate for light cooking, but not full meals. Initial communication with the owner was difficult and a little confusing but once we connected with the managers on the island all went well. Brian and Cindy are the best and went out of their was to make our stay pleasant.
This was a good location for launching a week of fishing and kayaking in the glades. The cottage was nice and big - plenty of room for 3 occupants. It could accommodate 6 if two were sharing the king bed and 2 couches were occupied. The place was exceptionally clean and well equipped.
We were not around much during the 9-5 hours so we had little to no issue with the constant buzz of the airboats during this time (they are obnoxiously loud and there are many - 40-50+). Afterhours, it was wonderfully quiet - little to no traffic in Everglades city with the grand population of 600 residents.
Initial guidance to get to the location was not provided and the ph. numbers were not updated to reflect new contacts. However, with some common sense it was not difficult to sort out where the ferry was, but we had some initial trouble trying to figure out how to contact the folks running the ferry.
The ferry required to travel back and forth from the island is a bit inconvenient, requiring one to call ahead to get a ride (a cellphone being a requirement here). Although prompt, it was still something I would have been happy to do without.
Overall, it was a nice place to stay, but less a star for the inconvenience of the ferry and the initial trouble with directions & contact info.
The cottage is beautifully decorated, and contains every amenity needed, and more.
My group had a ball, even though we were out of season.
I would like to express my thanks to the owners!
I would not return to this particular rental. Upon initiating the rental agreement I made the first payment, before the actual time the second payment was due the owner was requesting second payment. I made the second payment early because I didn't want to loose the rental. Unfortunately we had a medical emergency and tried to see if they could do any refund. The owner denied the request and we managed to use part of the rental as we didn't want to loose our money. The owner requested we allow real estate to show the home during our rental time. When we denied the owner she became very threatening--actually said she would have us evicted. Brian and Cindy were absolutely the best! Very positive and helpful. We really enjoyed their smiling faces. The unit had a non functioning ice maker that was noisy, cracked drinking glasses, limited cookware. The white slipcovers on the furniture need cleaning. The island itself is great. Clubhouse and pool are great. The boat shuttle is very nice because Brian and Cindy are so accommodating.
Overall, fantastic....hope to return in the future. Brian and Cindie were very accommodating! Loved the "back side" of the island which offered much bird activity. Even loved the diesel rumble of the fishing boats at 4am We pretty much had the pool to ourselves. The need to taxi to the mainland was never an inconvenience The kitchen was adequate although I always regret not bringing my own knives Only downside was a sugar ant infestation which was bothersome more than anything (why only 4 stars)and of course.....Mother Nature could have been a little kinder!
We weren't sure what to expect, especially since it is on an island and we have kayaks which would not be easy to transport our luggage. But as soon as we called Mark was there in the Club Everglades ferry to pick us up and help with our gear. The house is beautiful, clean, fresh and a welcome oasis after enjoying day trips out into the Everglades. It faces the Barron River with birds galore, manatees and a dolphin. Our morning coffee and evening wine became longer and more relaxed as the week went by. This is a retreat for those who like nature and quiet.
We re located in the Everglades National Park Area. We have kayaks, fishing, beaches, Resturants, museums, and outlet shopping within 20+ miles.
