If the country life is something that calls you, this recently renovated casita on our rural property just north of Santa Fe is the place for you! It has all of the amenities to make your visit comfortable...WiFi, DirecTV, dishwasher, stove/oven, microwave, refrigerator/freezer, coffee maker, coffee grinder, blender, laundry area with washer and dryer, and wood-burning stove/supply of firewood. Expansive views, the Rio Grande, Nambe Falls...this is horse country, and the area has maintained its historic, Northern NM roots.
The views of the Sangre de Christo mountains outside your bedroom window are breathtaking, and the magnificent sunsets, seen from the kitchen window or front door, provide you with a 'light show' nearly every evening. The quaint and lovely winery just down the road from us (Estrella del Norte) offers the best of Northern NM wines, and literally and figuratively gives you a flavor of the countryside.
Our roosters will let you know that 'morning has broken', and there will be a supply of 'horse candy' at the corral so that you can 'make friends' with our burros, Miss Bea and Miss Daisy, if you want to!! You can interact with our animals (the goats and chickens are friendly, too!) or stay toward the front of the property and just enjoy their sounds and energy...which ever feels right to you!
We are near several small towns (Pojoaque, Espanola, Chimayo), local places of interest (Santa Fe Opera, Sanctuario de Chimayo, Nambe Falls), several museums/historical areas, and numerous Resort-Casinos (Buffalo Thunder Golf Resort & Casino and The Santa Claran are two of our favorites), so there is shopping, sight-seeing and entertainment within minutes of our place. There are several wonderful restaurants within 15 minutes of our place, and Leonardo's aunt owns a world-famous, authentic Northern NM restaurant called Rancho de Chimayo about 25 minutes away. So...you can choose a rural, quiet type of experience, or enjoy night-life, athletic & cultural activities. dining out and shopping...or do what we do, and enjoy the best of both worlds!
Come enjoy the art, culture, scenery, and people of Northern New Mexico...truly unique and unforgettable.
Santa Fe in 'the national spotlight': CBS Sunday Morning recently featured a segment on Santa Fe that highlights our unique design culture. The segment was titled 'By Design: Santa Fe Style'. The report mentions Canyon Road, Georgia O'Keeffe Museum, Maria Benitez Institute for Spanish Arts, Museum of Indian Arts & Culture, Santa Fe Opera, Santa Fe Plaza, Santa Fe Railyard, El Zaguan (James L. Johnson House) and the Historic Santa Fe Foundation, La Casa Sena Restaurant and La Fonda Santa Fe Hotel. Taos comes in for mention also, particularly Taos Pueblo as the inspiration for Santa Fe Style.

I am a medicinal aromatherapist, and my practice, Shining Sun Aromatherapy, is located on the other side of the same building which houses the casita. My husband, Leonardo, is the craftsman behind the beautiful work in the apartment, and he does everything with skill, flair and heart. I am the decorator of the pair! As he always says, he can build the house, but I make it a home. We are a great team. We love our animals, and keeping things neat around the property, but not manicured. We want to maintain the natural feel of the place. Beginning in the spring of 2011, we plan to plant medicinal plants on our 1.5 irrigated acres of land, and begin to bring Shining Sun Farm into fruition!
Audre Gutierrez purchased this apartment in 2008
The casita is located across from our house, the main house on the property. I was drawn to the rural nature of this area, and the fact that the old Northern NM culture is still alive and well here. My husband grew up in El Rancho, just up the road from Nambe, and his family lives throughout the area...we had the guest house/studio on the property, and renovated part of it to be the home of Shining Sun Aromatherapy, and the back portion to be a vacation rental property because of the strong pull this area has to people drawn by the beauty of the Southwest, the unique art and culture of this area, and the local farming culture that still thrives in this area...every town has farmers markets, including the fabulous one in Santa Fe.
For people who love rural areas and farm animals, and miss this in their lives, this is a chance to be on a beautiful property with breathtaking views, up close and personal to these wonderful companions. (We also have three wonderful dogs). You are centrally located to Santa Fe, Taos, and Nambe Falls...lots to see and do, but, nestled in the cottonwoods, it all seems a million miles away.
Because we love animals so much...we have designated our casita as 'animal friendly', because we know how difficult it can be to travel with your pets and find lovely accommodations.
Many thanks for making us feel so welcome! We were able to see most or all of the sights -- Taos, Abiquiu, Bandelier, Los Alamos, White Rock, and even 2 wineries and 2 casinos! Fabulous Thanksgiving dinner at Buffalo Thunder. We loved the casita, with all of its furnishing & amenities, including the animal life. Santa Fe is a great place to be a tourist!
Our second visit to Shining Sun Casita was as wonderful as our first, last November. Just as advertised, all the amenities are taken care of - bedroom with a comfortable queen bed and dressers/chests to unpack you luggage, a large closet to store extra items, cozy bathroom with a wonderful shower, and a kitchen stocked with all the basic equipment for a home-cooked meal. As it was just the two of us, we had no need for the linens provided for the living room futon-sofa, but we both felt it was comfortable the night we opened it up to lounge while watching a movie. Although we spent most of our time hiking and sightseeing in and around Santa Fe, the TV with DirecTV service was enjoyable when we wanted to laze away a few hours in the evening. There was no need for the wood stove to heat the casita in May, but firewood was provided in case things turned cool. The great cottonwood tree just outside the casita provided cooling shade for porch sitting. And our dog loved all the smells and sounds of the barnyard just beyond the casita. All in all, this is a fantastic place to make your home base while exploring Santa Fe, Los Alamos, Bandelier National Monument, the Sangre de Cristos Mountains, Santa Fe National Forest, and points beyond. On this visit, we took in all of the above, as well as Fort Union National Monument. There is no shortage of great places to eat, but be prepared to drive to get there. And if you like to try your luck, there are numerous tribe-operated casinos nearby.
Great place to stay! Wonderful house, quiet and peaceful setting, with donkeys to boot! Great jumping off point to Santa Fe, Bandelier or Puye cliffs. Would recommend to anyone.
The Nambe Shinging sun Casita was fabulous for my husband and I. We enjoyed being away from traffic. Grilling outside and sitting under the cottonwoods in the sun was lovely. It is centrally located to many interesting sites. We recommend the high road to Taos.
We would certainly stay here again.
We couldn't have stumbled upon a better place to stay than Shining Sun Casita! Audre and Leonardo were wonderful hosts; they addressed all our needs in outfitting this lovely little home away from home. My husband and I plus our small dog stayed for a week in mid-November, and enjoyed Santa Fe, the surrounding national forest, Bandelier National Monument, and Los Alamos. We even experienced a light snowfall to make enjoying the casita's wood stove especially cozy. The rural location, complete with goats, burros, and chickens, is very restful. Views of the mountains and clean air are abundant. Not only will we be back when we visit Santa Fe again, but we'll definitely recommend to our friends! One very minor maintenance issue cropped up, which was immediately corrected. It really doesn't get any better.
My kids (age 5 & 3) and I stayed and enjoyed every minute we were at the Casita. They absolutely loved feeding and petting the burros and goats! The owners are wonderful and are quick to respond and help. What I like about the location was that the house is located outside of all the city hustle so in the evenings you are able to get away from the congestion and are easily able to drive back within 15 minutes to the center of Santa Fe.
I want to thank the owners again so much for their wonderful accommodations for my kids and I! By the time we left we left like we were family. Thank you!
My wife and I are traveling the country for a year, staying at VRBO rentals for a few months at a time. On our way down to Austin from Colorado we decided to stop and see Santa Fe for a few days.
The Casita is about 15 minutes from the downtown area of the city so if you want to walk out of your door and be in the thick of it, this isn't the place.
If you want some peace and quiet with incredible views and the ability to get to town with a quick drive this place is perfect.
On top of the beautiful location and proximity to outdoor activity, the hosts are fantastic and welcoming people. The casita is well maintained and has everything you need for a wonderful break from reality.
There is no doubt that if/when we are back in Santa Fe that we will be reserving this property again.
Thanks Leonard and Audre!
