Enjoy miles of magnificent marine views that end in mainland views of the Cascade mountains with Mt. Baker and Bellingham to the east, the mountains of British Columbia to the north, and the city lights of Vancouver BC and the ski lifts at night. Watch a variety of marine vessels make their way across the strait of Georgia, including boaters of all types whose destinations are several smaller islands within a few miles of the cottage. Walk along hillside trails on this 11 acre parcel that includes old growth trees and native flora. Bald and golden eagles nests are located on the property. Watch for eagles soaring past or looking down on you from an old growth tree. Many other species of birds are also seen and heard about the property. Relax in the cozy atmosphere of the cottage with comfortable furnishings that include sofa and easy chair with movable down overstuffed pillows and large ottoman. The wood stove and large picture windows looking over the water create a relaxing ambiance.
Why the Owner Chose Eastsound: : Our first Orcas Island project was a chalet that we built in 1996 a mile west of our present site. We found the 2/3 acre and proximity to neighbors and traffic, although light, going by to be distracting from our relaxation and feeling of peace. We think that the north shore views are the best on the island, so we wanted to stay here. In 1999 we purchased the present 11 acres and built the cottage in 2004.
The Unique Benefits at this Cottage:: Year Purchased: 2004 - The sheer natural beauty of the place starting with the fantastic views and peaceful woods, the variety of birds ranging from eagles to hummingbirds, the quiet, the ability to start a short walk or long hike from the front door, the healing effect the place has on our spirits, lots of wild black raspberries in season, the varieties of wildflowers, the full moon rising over and reflecting on the water. We could keep going on, but this is a good start.
Owner Description/Comments:: We are a professional couple, a teacher and psychiatric nurse practitioner. After falling in love with Orcas Island in the mid 90's, we made a long-term goal of living here full time. In August of 2007 we achieved that goal. We like the feeling of community, and appreciate the high quality of the environment, the arts, and the natural foods that are all abundant here. We love the outdoors and spend as much time as possible working, walking, beach combing, and relaxing outside.
I am a Psychiatric Nurse Practitioner with a private practice here on the island. My former husband Don and I fell in love with Orcas Island in the mid 90's, and we made a long-term goal of living here full time. In August of 2007 we achieved that goal. We like the feeling of community, and appreciate the high quality of the environment, the arts, and the natural foods that are all abundant here. Unfortunately my husband tragically died a year ago in March of 2014. It was a shock, but I am an even stronger believer in this community since the tragedy. I
love the outdoors and spend as much time as possible working, walking, beachcombing, and relaxing outside. I currently have a wonderful garden full of flowers and some veggies. I grew up on a farm in NE and I guess you just can't take the country out of the girl. I love working with people and enjoy an eclectic mix of rural practice and the arts here are outstanding.
Carla Weston purchased this cottage in 2004
Our first Orcas Island project was a chalet that we built in 1996 a mile west of our present site. We lived in the cottage in 2007 while we constructed the main house. This property is unique in that it has this outrageous view of the Salish Sea and the mountains of British Columbia. We also see Mount Baker. We have a surprisingly large amount of sunshine for being on the 'northshore'. Our view is approx 180degrees.
Close to Eastsound is a plus. Only ten minutes away, but you feel isolated on the property the way we are situated. We are about a 1/3 mile down the driveway and don't see any neighbors. The property is treed as well. There is a lot of wild-life and trails to walk. The sunrises, moonrises etc. are exceptional. The cottage is cozy and perfect for a couple.
My wife and I really enjoyed staying at Carla's place. Everything was exactly as listed and very clean. The view over the sound was just gorgeous and we had a really wonderful, tranquil experience during our week there. You feel as if you're in the middle of nowhere even though you're a short drive over to town. I'd definitely stay there again.
We enjoyed our three-night stay in Carla's peaceful one-bedroom getaway high above the water. The living area was cozy and the bed very comfortable. There's a large kitchen area if you want to cook, as well as a deck with a grill. The location is private and slightly remote , but not far from places like Moran State Park and Turtleback Mountain South Trail, where we enjoyed great hiking, the town of Eastsound where we had fun exploring the shops and co-op, and Crescent Beach where we experienced a relaxing walk with beautiful views. The property was clean and well-maintained, and Carla was very responsive when we had a slight problem. We would stay again!
My wife and I chose Carla's place for our honeymoon, and could not have been more pleased with our choice. We arrived to a bouquet of handpicked flowers and a lovely note from Carla. She really made it such a relaxed, easy process from our initial inquiry to the end of our time on the island. The view was incredible (even better than the pictures show), and the cottage was perfect. I was a little concerned that there would be dog hair on the furniture (given Carla's pet-friendliness), but to our delight there was none. My wife and I can't wait to head back to Orcas Island, and will absolutely spend our future trips in Carla's cottage.
We had a most wonderful vacation on Orcas Island and Carla's cottage was the perfect spot for us to stay. Staying in the cottage felt like living in a tree house above the sea. All of the windows and wrap around deck offer the most amazing views and it was incredibly quiet and peaceful. My favorite experience was lying on the cozy couch with my boys and watching the sky light up during an electrical storm. And this was after a gorgeous sunset!
The cottage was cozy and comfortable with a great kitchen that was stocked with all we needed to make several meals. Carla was a great host who took us on a fun walk around the property, pointing out an eagles nest and how to judge the tides by the view of rocks in the Salish sea.
We hope to come and visit again!
This home has incredible views from the city of Vancouver way up in Canada and South to an astounding front row view of Mt Baker in all it's glory. Nice furnishings and very quiet. A big plus is Carla really does like dogs.
We had a great time on Orcas Island and this home and location were ideal. Carla is a very nice hostess and her dogs are very friendly when they were on the property. We will definitely return to this property. Ideal for active people. Great remote feel yet close to Eastsound services (Island Hopper Brewery!).
Just like Goldilocks said, "This one is just right".
Let's start with the view. We were blessed with sunshine revealing snow capped Mt Baker across the deep blue sound. At night, the lights of Bremerton sparkled across the water. We spent the first full day on the deck, reading, taking pictures. and talking about the view! Add in a beautiful pair of eagles, and deep green forest and it's heaven on earth.
The apartment is quaint and comfy, equipped with all the essentials. Great mattress and linens. If you require top of the line finishes and accessories, this is not the place for you. But it's clean, warm and cute. Some of the cooking utensils and BBQ need to be replaced, but if you're not on vacation to cook, don't let that stop you. Everything is passable.
My husband and I love dogs and hate to leave our two beasts behind when we travel by air. To our delight, and one of the reasons we rented Carla's place, her two dogs were on the property most days and evenings. Behemoth, black, barking dogs. And so sweet! They accompanied us on walks, stopping obediently at the property line, and we threw sticks and toys and rocks for Jack the indefatigable retriever. Volkie, the vocal black shepherd, doesn't do fetch but enjoys barking at Jack as he carries around his treasures. Carla, thoughtfully, has provided a gate to keep the dogs off the deck and out of the house, which we used sparingly, but if u aren't into dogs you'd never know they're there with the gate closed.
We had a snafu with the bed breaking the first night, but Carla brought over tools and hung out while my husband fixed it. She is a warm hostess and responded quickly to our problem.
The location was great--ten minutes from East Sound, but so secluded in the forest, we never heard or saw another human when we were home. Had a great time whale watching with Eclipse. Highly recommend them.
In short, we'll be back!
Eastsound, Orcas Island, San Juan Islands, Washington State, USA (Less Than 4 Miles from Eastsound). Our property offers the best of both mountain and waterfront settings.
