About Carol Keiser

I have been traveling to Mexico for 35 years, painting and working on new designs for my hand painted tile business. San Miguel has inspired me for years and I am always amazed with the colors and life this town has to offer. It is always full of surprises and never disappoints.

Carol Keiser purchased this house in 1985

Why Carol Keiser chose San Miguel de Allende

This house is a perfect location, quiet street, nice neighbors, but yet easy walking distance to town and restaurants and shopping. The house gets the early morning sun, and actually sun all day, so it warms up quickly in the winer months. The garden is always a welcome sight after a day out.

What makes this house unique

There is a very tall pine tree in the garden, which immediately reminded me of Vermont. There are also two orange trees and a lime tree and all varieties of flowers and flowering vines growing up the walls, bougainvillea and plumbago. I especially like to have my morning coffee on the balcony off the bedroom that overlooks the garden and also gets the morning sun. There is now a rooftop terrazzo where one can view the sunset and watch the lights of San Miguel come on and light the evening sky.

Having visited San Miguel for 3 extended visits over the years, this is the best house we’ve rented, and we’ve studied and rented around the town. It’s a true Mexican house with it’s adobe construction and multiple private spaces located throughout. Charmingly Mexican, with beautiful art and well equipped, the house offers everything a home in San Miguel should have; a private ground level patio/garden perfect for those morning cups of coffee with hummingbirds right at your fingertips to a rooftop terrace offering a stupendous 360 degree view of San Miguel. On a quiet street, it’s also right around the corner from several very popular local restaurants and of course the marvelous rooftop bar of the Rosewood. We would stay here again with all it’s quirky beauty and with the housekeeping/gardeners we felt well taken care of including the delight of having our clothes washed and folded twice a week. All an easy 10 minute leisurely walk to the Jardin with it’s multitude of happenings. If you’re lucky enough to book this much sought house, do it ahead of time. Comfortable for 4-6 people why not have a whole house for the price of a hotel room and make your trip to San Miguel one to remember?

Beautiful house in fantastic location with gorgeous top floor patio with 360 degree view.

  • 4 of 5

The previous reviews we've read for this house do not do it justice. The house is beautiful throughout with paintings & decor of an artists touch. The location was perfect with a hotel around the corner for a swimming pool, great restaurants & the Instituto Allende a couple of blocks away, as well as many shops, and only about a 15 min walk without much hill to the center plaza. We parked our car on the street without any problem except dust. The maid & gardner were super sweet and we had everything we needed. Just a few things to consider: The bed was quite firm, the tv is very small with poor sound quality, the pans for cooking weren't the best, and the tub does not fill with hot water. We wished for lounge chairs on the rooftop patio but used blankets for sunning instead. The house is chilly even despite the 3 extra space heaters, but we simply dressed warmly when we got home & spent almost all our time in town or on the incredible rooftop anyway. (From what we heard, its hard to find a warm house anywhere in San Miguel.) Hot showers were great. Yes, there were some fireworks, but it was only occasionally and otherwise we had very quiet nights without any sleep disturbances. This is a great house in a very private setting & we were thrilled with the location as well as the rooftop deck, where we did yoga, ate our meals, read in the sun and watched the birds and beautiful sunsets. Thank you Carol for sharing your piece of paradise with us. We definitely hope to return!

Safe, affordable writers retreat with lovely garden & rooftop terrace

  • 4 of 5

My writing group just returned from month-long stay. Photos and previous reviews very accurate. Highlights indeed the rooftop terrazzo with stunning 360 degree views, charming garden, balcony off the master bedroom, living room windowseat, big tiled tub, and Beatriz y Miguel (maid & gardener). It’s very affordable (up to 4 bedrooms, if you cover the glass door of the study), safe (behind a locked gate on a relatively quiet lane in a good neighborhood off a main street) and suited for writing (WiFi, large desk in study, smaller desks in 2 of 3 bedrooms). Location within walking distance of 2 Spanish schools, lovely public Juarez park, Saturday organic market, and 2 legendary rooftop bars. Every rental claims to be walkable to the Jardín; in this case, it’s a fairly flat 12 minutes, but those huge cobblestones tiring, especially in the rain.

Our major issue NOT THE OWNER’S FAULT, but something writers & artists may wish to consider. Business booming in SMA, and construction crews were working 6 days a week, as early as 7:30 am, on the house to the right (which shares a wall with Casa Rosa), on the house to the left, on the house directly in back, and on a house across the street, 2 doors down. Some days we had noise coming from all 4 sides, followed by torrential rains at night. Not anyone’s fault, but did impact quality of life. One LOVELY way Owner offset this was to have Property Manager buy a DVD player! The small TV gets US broadcast channels (no cable or satellite), and I brought DVDs, so some rainy nights we had food delivered and watched movies by the fire.

Not quite sure why listing mentions “2 light filled studios with views across town”, as they’re are locked and off limits to renters. Also, I asked specifically about the July 2014 review (kitchen utensils outdated; fridge old & very noisy; bedrooms plain with window issues) and was told issues had been resolved. Not true. Now, I don’t expect them to paint the bedrooms vibrant Mexican colors for me, but it did bother me that the bedding was clearly cast-offs (pillows flat & smelly, sheets & bedspreads faded & threadbare). Before our arrival, Owner KINDLY forwarded newsletters about cultural events in town and gave my email to a neighbor who generously answered my Qs via email, like where to get a pedicure and seamstress. Property Manager has limited English but responds quickly to email and did get one crew to hold off till 8AM. House has fans, heaters, guidebooks, bottled water, etc

Casa Rosa - Beautiful indoor and outdoor spaces and very well priced

  • 4 of 5

My family and several guests spent a happy month here. The house is unusual in that it is set back from the street, making it by far the quietest of the 3 houses we've stayed at in SMA. There are 4 bedrooms, though the one on the ground floor has a clear glass door (which we covered with a blanket). The master bedroom is really beautiful and has a lovely view out to the garden. 2 of the other bedrooms are a little plain and could use some colorful paint as in the rest of the house. One bedroom has only 1 little window that turned out to be soldered closed, so it was quite hot for sleeping in the summer. We were thrilled with the 2 sinks in the upper bathroom and the showers were great. There is folk art and the artist's paintings throughout the house. We found the kitchen large and attractive, but difficult to actually cook in daily. Things like knives, silverware, spatulas and serving bowls could use an updating. The fridge is small, old, and very noisy and the toaster didn't work. The outdoor spaces are lovely, though. You can bring your meals outside to the ground floor garden, the second floor balcony, or for a good workout the roof top terrazzo on the 4th floor. More trays (or a pulley system) would help make this easier. The terrazzo has an amazing 365 degree view of all the areas churches as well as the surrounding hills. It is covered for shade and the mosquitos don't fly up that high, making it a wonderful space any time of the day. The maid and gardener are a friendly helpful couple who come twice a week. There is a washer, but no dryer and the clothes line is on the 3rd floor. Also good exercise. The location was excellent for Josefina's spanish summer camp and the Instituto (both 5 min. walks) . Also very convenient to many restaurants and shops on Ancha de San Antonia. Two hotels with day use pool are a 10min walk away. The central Jardin is a good 20 min walk away, which sometimes felt too far for more than once a day with kids. I would happily stay here again - I think it was a wonderful deal for the price, given the number of bedrooms, the size, and the good location, in comparison to many other properties I looked into.

I love this house!

  • 5 of 5

I have stayed in Casa Rosa twice, and thoroughly enjoyed every moment there. If anything, the description and photos fail to do justice to this lovely home. A couple of things I would add:

The kitchen is ample, and very friendly to work in. No cramped corners or backing into your fellow cooks. The counters and fixtures are well placed, so if you like to cook it is all well arranged.

The garden! Not only the flowering plants mentioned in the description, but there is also a large pine tree in the garden. So you can enjoy your time for lunch on the patio in the sunlight-dappled shade, or move into the sun if the day is a cool one. And if you speak a little Spanish, you will enjoy chatting with the gardener and housekeeper when they come, son muy agradables. And they keep the place clean and well-tended.

The interior is comfortably furnished and arranged. There is built in seating in the living room where you can curl up with a good book, and a nice seating arrangement in which to enjoy company. The dining area gives out into the living room for a nice living flow, and the living room then gives out into the garden. And the house is filled with original paintings and folk art.

I would recommend this to any person or family seeking a comfortable, down to earth place to stay that speaks to the real Mexico. And of course, San Miguel is famous for its culture and nearby attractions. While there, you must arrange to see the old cathederal at Atotonilco with its priceless murals and painted ceiling, La Gruta (hot springs), and all the parades and festivals that shoot like unexpected stars all over San Miguel. The nearby Instituto de Allende, Bellas Artes, the Galeria Irma. Get to know the dulces at the nearby bakery in el codo. Disfrutale!
