Overview

About the property

2 bedrooms, 2 full bathrooms, 1 half bathroom, sleeps 4

Our holiday home is situated in the countryside on a dike next to the picturesque river “Het Gein”. A typical Dutch surrounding where you can bike and walk. In the summertime you can swim in the river Het Gein.

Amsterdam is very nearby: with a bike it takes you 5 minutes to subway station Gein, which takes you in 20 minutes to the center of Amsterdam. With a car you can drive in 5 minutes to the P+R subway station of Gaasperplas or to the train station Abcoude. And in 15 minutes you drive to the center of Amsterdam.

Because our house is so centrally situated, all big tourist sites are within an hour drive, such as Keukenhof, Zaanse Schans, Haarlem, Volendam, Marken, The Hague, Hoge Veluwe, Utrecht and the 'Venice of the North' : Giethoorn etc etc.

The summerhouse of our farm, which was built in 1865, is situated just 200m from the city border of Amsterdam. On the first floor there are 2 bedrooms each with an individual bath room, there is a living and a large kitchen with dining table. The folding doors brings you to the big private garden which gives you a panoramic view to the surrounding pastures with grazing sheep and cows. On the second floor you will find a very spacious loft-like lounge area and large dining table with fire place. There is also a tv with dvd player.

The house has a rich history: until the 60’s the summerhouse was a cattle shed with hay-loft and the farm was leased by various farmers families. Later the land was sold by the Amsterdam municipality to the famous Dutch sculptor Nel van Lith. On the old hay-loft she gave sculptor lessons to our former Queen Beatrix. From 1995 a garden architect lived here and she designed the English/French romantic garden that is still intact today.

344517 - Farm house overlooking pastures outside Amsterdam

My wife and I have travelled quite a bit and always rent apartments or condos whenever our stay is for a few days or more. This charming cottage located a few kilometers from Abcoude along a one lane road which follows a canal on each side with old farm houses with lots of sheep, cows and horses and wind-mills scattered here and there is the most charming place we have ever rented. A five to seven minute drive brings you to the Abcoude train station which leads to Amsterdam Central station in less than 25 minutes in one direction or a few minutes more to Rotterdam in the other. Stephany, the owner was very helpful and accommodating. All and all, a five star rating for sure

Relaxing!!!

  • 5 of 5

Arrived and was greeted by Stephanie, the owner, who was very pleasant and helpful.

Farm house was nicer than the photos. So quiet and relaxing, it was lovely.

If you want to ride bikes, you will have to rent them from the town Abcoude. Aparently the rental place will deliver the bikes to you and you rent for 10 Euros a day.

We spent two days in Amsterdam and one day in Utrecht. Utrecht was more low key and very picturesque.

Expensive for shopping though in the town center. There is a large mall attached to the Utrecht Centraal train station which is probably cheaper.

We were not there to shop but we did do some window shopping and the prices in the village were a bit crazy.

Amsterdam was great and very busy. We took the train to both places fairly easily.

You can drive to the train station which is about 4 Kms away from the Farm House. To drive from the farm house to Abcoude is approximately 3kms but it is a very small road with pull overs every so often. You will need to drive slowly and very carefully so keep that in mind if you are trying to catch the train at a specific time.

We took the “Sprinter” train both places. It is white and blue with a bit of yellow. On the platform there are little screens which tell you all the stops that train will go to.

There is a ticket booth outside of the train station where you can buy your ticket for the day or you can buy a pass if you are travelling a lot and staying for more than just a few days.

We opted for the day and Abcoude to Amsterdam was 8 Eoros round trip.

Abcoude to Utretch was 11 Euros round trip.

Both took about 25 minutes.

Overall the farmhouse was just what we all needed. Quiet, comfortable, really nicely decorated and clean!!

I would love to go back 😊

Quiet & Comfortable Lodging

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful, rural location very convenient to Amsterdam and surrounding sights. The owner was very helpful and accommodating, making us feel very welcome. Plenty of room for two couples, with separate en suite bedrooms and comfortable living spaces.

Absolutely fantastic

  • 5 of 5

After returning from our trip to Amsterdam I have only positive things to say about Het Gein! It is right on the outskirts of the city and the views are over fields of sheep and cows, the property is even better than the website and pictures show! It is approx a 20 min walk from Gein metro station. You will want for nothing at het gein as everything you could think of is provided from a full array of cutlery and condiments to dishwasher tablets and also washing powder for the machine, Stephanie popped round on the first night to check everything was ok and was easily contactable to sort out any problems which we had, we will definitely be returning. An absolutely fantastic property in an amazing setting

Excellent and exciting

  • 5 of 5

A tremendous experience. A house like fairy tales. quiet. green. And here ... calm. Very comfortable. Bedrooms with en suite bathroom and shower. Kitchen with all tools and appliances. Location - Io better. Single note - frequent and unstructured Internet disconnections. In conclusion, we want to return to this place. We hope that in the not too distant future.

Perfect vacation home

  • 5 of 5

Stephanie's house was spotless. The landscaping is its own little paradise. The interior of the home is tastefully decorated. You quickly feel "at home". Very spacious for my family of four (boys 16, 18). Nice bathroom fixtures.

Just walking down this street along the canal is wonderful (windmills not far away). The Netherlands is paradise for bicycling (something to consider for your stay). We enjoyed shopping and dinner in Abcoude. Stephanie has a book with great detailed advice for trips nearby and afar.

Although we did not get to meet Stephanie, as she was on vacation herself, her communication was thorough. We did get to meet her friendly dog and cat. Highly recommended.

What a stunning find!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful surroundings, comfortable and lovely home, and warm and welcoming hosts! Raymond and Stephanie allow you plenty of privacy but are there to help whenever you need it. I loved the sound of the birds and the cows mooing in the surrounding fields. The local town in Abcoude is very cute and has great restaurants and grocery stores. A truly joyful experience.
