Peaceful and great value escape in the Catskills.

  • 5 of 5

We had a wonderful 9 days stay at the cottage. Richard was very easy to deal with and quick to provide us with any further information we needed. The cottage is set in picturesque grounds with glimpses of mountains though the trees. Great for birdwatching and a roomy deck for just sitting, reading and enjoying the tranquility of it all. The cottage itself is very characterful, and basically but comfortably furnished, as advertised. It was also very clean on arrival. Great shower and really fast internet too! The town of Margaretville is an easy 10min drive, there is also a good farm stand nearby and a farmers market . All in all, a perfect, good value escape from the city and an ideal place to enjoy life's simple pleasures. We hope to return. Thanks!

Owner's Response: thanks Sophie for your review, Lisa and I never considered this little cottage as a "5 star" place, but I just happen to be sitting out on the deck on a beautiful afternoon writing this owners response from HomeAway and think the peaceful and quiet setting on this deck is at least 5 stars. But I wouldn't want anybody thinking of staying at our place to expect a 5 star property, but for us and I think many others it's a real nice getaway. The autumn and winters are just as nice. Hope to see you back and thanks,Richard

Nice location with basic lodging

  • 3 of 5

Being at the lower end of the price scale one should arrive with realistic expectations - and in that sense this worked for our 5 day stay. Communications, and practical stuff were well covered - getting in and out was easy - and it is a very nice and quiet piece of the Catskills area- with easy access to Margaretville. A great farm stand close at hand.

Owner's Response: thanks for your review Phillip, and your right as noted, our place is at the low end of the price scale...before Lisa and I purchased this small cottage as a ski getaway, we would rent places, but would have to share with other people since (Lisa an artist and I a musician) we couldn't find a simple secluded place in a beautiful mountain location near skiing at a reasonable rent. We were thrilled when we found this little affordable cottage, we couldn't wait for Friday evenings to get there, light the fire in the wood burning stove, get up at sunrise, put another log in the fire, have coffee, and off to the slopes, (or just a beautiful hike outside our door up the snowy mountain) so quiet and peaceful, not a person or car to be seen or heard.

Peaceful, secluded stone cottage

  • 4 of 5

We just spent two nights at this beautiful location. The setting is completely private, peaceful and silent. We spent our time walking the country roads and sitting on the deck. We are bird watchers, this was a perfect place to see many species of birds. The fields were alive with spring flowers, the earthy smells were wonderful. The nights were alive with owls, tree frogs, toads and lightening bugs!

The cottage is very rustic, it was fine for us, we didn't mind the simplicity. It was very clean, glad Richard reminded us to bring our own linens. The internet service was great, loved not having a t.v.

We ate out one night at Oakleys, it was ok. They have a brick oven, the pizza was fine. We enjoyed eating on the deck, the weather cooperated.

We will return soon!

Great little getaway for one or two people!

  • 4 of 5

We were looking for a private little place to get away and found exactly that. This cottage offered all the amenities we needed for a comfortable stay. Though there are neighbors, we were not disturbed by them at all during our weekend there. The owner, Richard, was very easy to work with. He checked in with me via email to make sure we had arrived ok.

The only real drawback about the stay was that there isn't a lot of night-life locally, meaning late night restaurants. We did find some great places to eat, just had to drive a bit to get to them.

The scenery was beautiful. I can only imagine how amazing it looks in the fall with all the colors on the trees.

Owner's Response: Tara your our first review, thanks so much. Our 1 or 2 neighbors which you can't see from the cottage or deck have not been seen in over 15 years, the 15+ acre properties seem to be maintained but NEVER occupied, we miss the prior owners who always generously supplied us with home grown produce from there gardens. As far as restaurants did you try the Queens Mountain Cafe in Roxbury, I heard they are open now to 10pm and they have a (CIA grad) 5 star chef from some fancy schmancy places in NYC. Also did you try the Black Bear Cafe in Arkville, crazy Bruce the owner and chef gets seafood directly from Maine (he drives up to Maine in his truck Tuesdays and comes back Thursdays) I love his lobster pasta with garlic. Also in Roxbury a place called the Public (I heard is popular with NYC weekenders) Also the Peekamoose in Big Indian (people drive from Woodstock to eat there) is amazing owned by another fancy schmancy chef from NYCs top restaurants. But I agree I hope for more to come. But when we are at the cottage we love to Bar B Que steaks or fresh Tuna on the deck (Bruce also sellsfish retail from his cafe) and chill (as my daughter would say) thanks again Tara and hope you come back to stay again!Richard
