Four bedrooms, three baths. Rustic. Natural. Removed. A romantic retreat... an artist's paradise. A forever remembered family adventure. With spectacular, 60-mile, down-island views of the Virgin Islands, you may never leave the pool to walk down to the beach. Come here and get away TO it all! Ideal for active tourists and pool-potatoes alike... A Large pool overlooks everything. Twenty-five acres of privacy, rolling down to a lagoon which backs onto the famed Zoni Beach - where it is crowded if six people lie on its mile of perfect sand. The Plantation Style House comes with WiFi, blender, linens, towels, TV (PBS and CBS) with DVD player, Blue tooth & Stereo, original Caribbean Antiques and oil paintings, orange trees, palms, mahogany and lots of books. Beach is a two-minute drive away. But please note: the deer, wild horses, iguanas, and chupacabras belong to the island. Nearly zero crime, and most locals speak English as well as Spanish.
Why Owner Chose Culebra Island: We like the Islands and we do Day Charters on our sailboat. We love Culebra because of the good people and the lack of rampant development. Most importantly, it has some of the best water sports in the entire Caribbean...good surfing, great snorkeling, good scuba, great sailing, etc. etc. and the hikes around the house are spectacular as well. So come and sit by the pool, or set off on an all day hike. You can do it all on this friendly little island. An island so few folks have heard about, that once you get home, you make think it was all a dream.
Owner Notes Unique Benefits at this Home: Outrageous views. Solitude. The drama of weather: towering clouds and and two oceans meeting right out front. The North Atlantic and the tranquil Caribbean. Thunderstorms off in the distance. Rockin reggae and Happy Hour. Dipping in the pool. Playing with the kids in the shade of the garden. Snorkeling with friends. Surfing alone. And often... A mile long beach with 3 other people -- all of whom are my family. Beach View: Best Views on the Island... Sweeping views of the Virgin Islands and about 15 closer cays. Ocean View: Watch ships and sailboats, turtles and whales... yes Humpbacks are once again calving in these waters. Zoni Beach- A mile long swath of sand. Calm waters and good snorkeling at either end. A major turtle nesting beach. A tropical dream.
There are several delightful cats on the premises. They work very hard to keep the house critter free when the house is empty. They are very friendly and when guests are there, the cats are only permitted outdoors or in the Great Room (not in the bedrooms). Abbie, our caretaker, comes by every few days to check on the house and the cats. Due to our infinity pool, we cannot rent to children under the age of ten without an indemnity clause signed by parents. Ask us in either language about spending an incredible day chartering a captained sailboat around the island. You will get a special rate for renting Zoni Beach Estate. Dress appropriately... which is minimally. Temperatures here range between 65-88 degrees. Sea temperatures between 80-85 degrees. And pina coladas are best served frozen.
We love Culebra because of it's one of the last un-spoilt places on earth! It's like the caribbean of yesteryear. It's Natural. It's so laid back it is Anti Chic -- which is really cool. No wannabes here. We like the good people and the lack of rampant development. Most importantly, it has some of the best water-sports in the entire Caribbean... great snorkeling, good scuba, great sailing, good surf, etc. etc. and the hikes around the house are spectaular as well. So come and sit by the pool, or set off on an all day hike. You can do it all on this friendly little island. An island so few folks have heard about, that once you get home, you make think it was all a dream.
Angus Beavers purchased this house in 1989
Culebra is the Caribbean of Yesteryear... no glitz... no glamour... no high rise hotels... lots of chickens. Hemingwayesque. It's like Key West before it became Key West. Wander round town with your cocktail in hand... wander around some obscure beaches with your bathing suit on... or not.
The Pre- Cruise Ship Caribbean! No passports. Easy Access. US Owned. Truly, the last virgin Virgin Island.
Angus - House was great! Just what we wanted. The views and quiet were perfect. Come visit in Jackson some time.
I saw Culebra mentioned in Garden and Gun magazine as one of the "undiscovered" places in the islands. Turns out my sister had been there multiple times going back at least a decade. We went online and found Zoni Beach Estates house and Angus. Both times the business of our correspondence has been smooth and efficient.
There were two new people in our group of six and one of my joys is hearing them proclaim the beauty and charm of the house, the location and the island of Culebra and Culebrita.
Anybody who worries about the lack of AC should put their mind at rest. The rooms have excellent ventilation from the sea breezes and floor fans are available. The furniture and decorations are island and lend to the ambience, but we did not spend that much time indoors. There is a new combination propane/charcoal grill. Fire it up and grill your chicken, pork chops or hamburger from Milka's. Squeeze some limes into you tropical adult beverage and sit by the pool after a day of going to anyone of the beaches. We like Zoni, but we also like walking the length of it to the left and around the rocks to your own private beach. The hike to Brava beach is worth it also.
Dinner/lunch at Mamasita's or Dingy Dock or for upscale dining, there is Susies. BTW there is another larger grocery store but it does not sell alcohol and the parking is harder. Whatever.
One complaint and something that may come up....There was a bike rally on the island one day and it was accompanied by a motorcycle cop from PR. We had 6 people in our Jeep [they are 5 passenger from Jerry's Jeeps] and we had to drop of one of our party on the roadside, take the others home and come back to fetch him. Silly since the cyclists were disobeying all the rules of the road and were presenting a danger to themselves. Never had that happen and doubt it will be a future problem.
Liz Maxwell can provide you the number for Kahlil to take you for a day trip to Culebrita. First part was good coral snorkeling then the second was to the most beautiful beach in the world.
Definitely fly to Culebra from PR. Try to make it from the San Juan airport. Because of a delay from Orlando we ended up flying from Ceiba at the eastern edge of PR. $85 dollar taxi ride but our flight was only 44 dollars then. Got to see the whole island. Got to roll when on vacation. BTW, Verizon has NO service in PR but when you get to the house you can hook up to the WiFI

It truly is a special place. The home, the island and the people are the best we have ever experienced. Secluded beauty and sweeping ocean views describe it perfectly.
We rented this fabulously sited house for 10 days in early December and reveled in the privacy, sweeping views, pool and spacious deck. It was perfect for our goal of relaxing in peace in between exploring the amazing beaches on Culebra. Each day we watched the cruise ships and planes buzzing into nearby St. Thomas and were SO thankful we were enjoying almost deserted beaches and hardly any traffic rather than congested roads and too many other people all around us. If you are attracted to the slower pace and fewer tourist attractions than other places offer, Culebra is a welcome change and a good place to have quality couple or family time together. This house works well for being away from the busier part of the island while still within a very short drive of the restaurants, stores and beaches. Not far to go! The property manager was helpful and responsive, the wifi worked well, and it was very helpful to have a phone at the house since our cellular service was absent. Very happy we chose this house and stayed longer than just a week.
The 'bones' of the house are excellent, with a gracious design and spacious layout. It's not a new place by any means, and some repair and refurbishment are now due. Some floor tiles need to be replaced, pots and pans are older, furniture looks nice but you sink almost to the floor, and a few appliances are old enough to need replacement, such as the defunct blender. These are easily overlooked when you are sitting by the pool with a libation in hand and a 180 degree view, but the house could be truly amazing and more comfortable with some reinvestment.
Zoni was our favorite beach, but we were glad to have done the relatively easy hike to Brava one day and would recommend that if you have the time. BIG waves and hardly a soul at Brava. Some of the directions make this seem like a difficult hike, but footing is generally good and it's never steep. You have to see Flamenco because it's so long and white, but Zoni is so much like having a private beach and so very convenient to the house.
I love to travel and I have to say this is the best VRBO I have ever stayed at and one of the most relaxing and wonderful vacations we have ever had as a family. This place is simply amazing. The location, views, pool, layout of the home are all perfect. We arrived to a rainbow in the early evening and enjoyed a week of a bright moon at night and amazing stars. We traveled with another family and each couple had beautiful bedrooms with ocean views and breezes. The two rooms the teens slept in were great (and we all appreciated they had their own bathroom) but did not have the views. They mainly slept out on the very private and secure deck under the stars and retreated to the back rooms when the sun came up. Really a perfect situation for teens! I have not had another vacation stay where I would have felt completely comfortable with my kids sleeping outside the house. The main area of the house is separated from the bedrooms and allowed some people to stay up late, others to wake early, and no one bothered anyone. The main room also feels like you are outside due to the patio doors and breezes and no one felt like it was a chore to go inside to cook with those amazing views. We also could escape the sun when we wanted but still feel like we were outside. This is not a generic vacation home and I really appreciated that. It looks like someone creatively and comfortably decorated it and it creates a beautiful and relaxing environment. If you are looking for generic this is not it...but then you probably would not like Culebra either since it is not that type of island vacation. This is our second trip to Culebra and I loved the Flamenco Beach lodging but when you wanted to escape the sun you no longer had a view or breeze. My only advice would be to fly over to the island from San Juan rather than deal with the ferry over. I have always been afraid of small planes but I watched youtube videos ahead of time to prepare and the views are absolutely amazing. The ferry back is easier in terms of tickets and timing but I think we will fly back the next time too in order to avoid the expense of San Juan and to maximize our time in Culebra. We definitely hope to stay here again! I think this has to be the very best location on the island and allows for an amazing relaxing vacation!
Absolutely beautifully located vacation home. Must have really been something in its day. The view is stunning. The pool is such a wonderful luxury on this dry island. The bones of the home are excellent. Just think of the house as past its prime. The doors, windows, and screens need a lot of reinvestment. The intense sun, wind, rain, and heat have taken their toll. The pool mechanicals are marginal. The layout of the structures is fine. The plumbing/water system is something you should be ready for: Fresh water is relatively scarce resource. It is not for wasting. (think low-flow and small volumes) All the water is from cisterns, located below the structures. All faucets run SLOW. But, the plumbing works fine. One realizes what a luxury the pool is, after witnessing water delivery to the house via tanker truck.
We were prepared for the driveway but, it still made me laugh. Four-wheel drive is not mandatory unless it is really raining.
But, the location is wonderful. I watched the sun rise over Culebrita and St Thomas, each daybreak. I would then jump in the pool to cool-off. After a quick toweling, a cup of coffee always tasted great. The house wifi (limited range/satellite speed) allowed us keep in contact with family/friends. Then we often went down to Zoni Beach (1mi away) to play in the surf. Or, we went to Tamarindo Beach to snorkel with turtles.
We would return to the house, eat lunch, jump in the pool, then nap.
In the evening we would sit and watch the ships cruise out of St Thomas. After dark, stargazing and a last dip in the pool before bed. Tradewinds and surfsound in the distance. Just loved it.
FYI The cat was loud in the morning. And, all shopping is at the other end of the island. AND, The place is not childproofed -caution
Lovely view, big house... but not well taken care of
Culebra Island, Puerto Rico, Puerto Rico, Caribbean (12 miles from the Virgin Islands, 20 miles from Puerto Rico) -- Culebra is what the Caribbean was forty years ago. Magazines call it Hemingwayesque. Why? Because it's about anti-chic... No glitz. No mega resorts... Just beaches, Coral reefs, Wildlife Sanctuaries, more beaches, Scuba, Snorkeling, Sailing, Surfing, Wind Surfing, Bone Fishing, Marlin Fishing, Kayaking, and more beaches. The Virgin Islands and Puerto Rico are 15 miles away. Four miles distant is the booming town of Culebra -- with 2,000 souls, fourteen bars, ten restaurants, four markets, two dance halls, and countless chickens! Nightlife is surprisingly vibrant -- till 10pm. Or stay home at Casa Zoni, blend up a rum drink, kick off your flip-flops and dance under the stars...
