Roam the Italian countryside from your base at villa Bottino. The property’s rustic stone-walled exteriors have charm to spare, and its two buildings give two or more families room to vacation together, while still enjoying their own private areas. Extensive outdoor spaces with views of the surrounding hills make it tempting to stay in, but the nearby beaches and towns of the Lucca area are worth a day trip or two.
There’s no excuse not to relax at Bottino. Plunge into the saltwater pool, catch up on reading from a lounge chair on the stone patio or take in the view of the olive groves around the property from the outdoor dining area. Try your luck at the bocce court or billiards table, then engage your senses in a cooking lesson in the large kitchen in “The Barn.” There’s even a piano in case musical inspiration strikes.
The property’s two historically designated buildings share details like stone exteriors, tile roofs and country-casual interiors. Each house has its own living room with plenty of deep armchairs and a fireplace or wood-burning stove—the perfect spot to nap after a day of swimming, cooking or hiking. A tidy peach and blue kitchen offers modern perks like a coffee maker and dishwasher.
Bottino has five bedrooms and can sleep up to ten guests. Each bedroom has an en-suite bathroom, giving families or couples their own private space. Four of the bedrooms have double beds; the fifth has two twin beds. Details like upholstered headboards and soft-toned walls add comfort and cheer.
The villa is two miles from the village of San Martino in Freddana, which offers shops and restaurants. Don’t miss the beaches of Versilia, just 12 miles away. Drive to Pisa, which is 25 miles away, or Florence, which is about 45 miles away. If you’d rather walk, there are plenty of nearby hiking trails in the Apennines and Apuan Alps.

SWIMMING POOLS - Swimming pools are not open all year. If your rental period is outside the period May 30th to October 3rd, please check with us that the pool can be opened. Swimming pools are not enclosed with fences and there are no lifeguards. Clients’ use of the swimming pool is at their own risk.
HEATING - Heating is available at an additional charge of 50 Euro per day and must be paid directly on the spot to the owner or his/her representative before departing. Please note that heating in Italy, when not subject to restrictions by the local Government, is more expensive compared to other countries. If you look for a property in low season, make sure to ask for an estimate of the heating cost. You may be asked a supplementary deposit for heating expenses.
WATER AND ELECTRICITY - Please note that most of the properties that we offer are not the typical purpose-built Mediterranean holiday villas. Most are converted farmhouses or former manor houses, full of character and history. Water shortages do occur; please use it sparingly during the summer months. At the same time, Italy is probably one of the few countries in the world where the government has introduced a system of electricity limitators to contain the national consumption. This means you must be careful when using more than one appliance at once because the limitator will shut the electricity off.
INTERNET CONNECTION - Many of our properties have an internet connection. From our experience, when a connection is interrupted due to technical reasons beyond our control, it is unfortunately very difficult, despite our efforts, to receive immediate assistance from some of the internet providers operating in Italy. We therefore strongly suggest that those who need to access their emails should bring their own BlackBerry, or a similar portable device. Please note that in any case we cannot accept responsibility for lack of these services.
LOW SLUNG CARS - VANS – MINIBUSES - Most of our houses are located in the countryside. Some of them can be accessed only by unsealed roads and driveways. We therefore advise people intending to take a sports or low-slung car on holiday, to check with us first whether the access to the property allows for such a car. We advise against the use of vans and minibuses. Please always check with us, at the time of booking, if you are planning to use this type of vehicle when staying at one of our properties.

The hostess was a remarkably kind and informative person who went out of her way to assist us. She thoroughly showed us around the villa and left us her phone number if needed. Villa Bottino was the perfect jumping off point for many Tuscan adventures as well as a lovely boat tour along Portofino up to Camogli. We enjoyed a day hiking in the Cinque Terre, which was too crowded in August, and discovered the lovely mountain villages such as Barga. Wish there was more time to relax at Villa Bottino!
Beautifully renovated farmhouse set within stunning gardens and with wonderful views of the surrounding valley. Very helpful owner. Great location, private but close to Lucca and Pisa.
We had a wonderful time. Every portion of our trip was so enjoyable and fun. Barcelona was so interesting and so easy to get around from our Casa Capella. The owner was very helpful and all the recommendations were perfect and made our stay so memorable.
Our cruise was so much fun and saw many ports we has never visited. Botino was enchanting and was easy to tour from its location. Thanks to Amanda Ross and Diandra for all their help to make this a perfect vacation for us. They were awesome to work with on all the details. All the transfers and the rental car company were very professional and friendly. Words can not describe our appreciation to Luxury Retreats. Only wish to say from the bottom of our hearts thank you for making this a great and memorable vacation.
Overall, a hugely enjoyable holiday. The Villa at Bottino was excellent, even better than what we expected from the photographs. The facilities were first class including the pool. The host was most warm and welcoming and very helpful. The support provided during the stay in terms of Villa cleaning was very good. The location close to Lucca and within 90 min of Florence was very good and the surrounding countryside was beautiful. The support from Luxury Retreats from time of first contact was very pro- active and very helpful - all queries dealt with very efficiently. We would have no hesitation in using their services again.
1) Perfect location - Proximity to Lucca, Beaches on the coast, the Alps, Functional supermarket, etc
2) Amazing Setting - Preserved the tieless facade, yet updated the interior with modern amenities (but not too many in order to preserve rustic experience)
3) Great Hospitality - The owner, the caretakers/cleaners, the chef - All were friendly and incredibly helpful
The villa was perfect for our needs. We did a lot of siteseeing in the area. It was a great starting off place for us. If we are able to return in the future we would choose Villa Bottino and spend more time relaxing there. Buying local foods and using the herbs in the wonderful kitchen garden was definitely a plus as my daughter likes to experiment with cooking flavors. The country environment complete with a beautiful landscape, quiet evenings, roosters in the morning and pheasants milling about, was a wonderful contrast to our suburban life style. Fruits fresh from the vine were a daily treat. The boys enjoyed playing around in the pool while we relaxed reading books from the Bottino library on the pool patio. Guilliana was so warm, welcoming and helpful. She personified the atmosphere of the Farmhouse turned into Villa.
