Definitely nicer than you expect
This apartment over a garage is in an alley so we expected a "typical" alley experience. It is anything but that. The alley is more like a small street with lots of activity that would normally be on the main street. The apartment was well furnished, very clean and stocked with a full kitchen including dishes and flatware, cooking devices and even a few spices that might be needed. The linens were adequate although we bought pillows from a local department store since the ones provided are pretty harsh. Also, you have to like beds just off the floor to really appreciate the sleeping arrangement. The television was equipped with only the basic internet connection so we had to use our Chromecast in order to view anything we really wanted. The wireless was second rate so we had to rely on our cell phone hotspot to be online. The owners were responsive and very nice. Unfortunately for us, we booked a three month stay while looking to purchase a house. We found an ideal property in a month and had paid for three so lost several thousand dollars in the process. Be careful about your timing of your stay!

Wow! Great place and Esther and her husband couldn't have been nicer!
We stayed at the Alley house for 1 month with our 7 month old daughter while we were transitioning from Germany back to Portland. Esther was so nice and helpful. And the apartment is new, clean, and has everything you would need for a stay in Portland. We had what we thought was a small leak in the bathroom (turns out it was my fault - condensation caused by steaming veggies for home made baby food- oops). But when I called Esther she was very responsive and helpful. Other plus is the location and parking in the garage, which with a baby was great! Thank you Esther for a lovely stay!

Cozy, well designed private apartment in great location
The Alley House is a cozy apartment that we loved to call home for the month we stayed in Portland. This well designed space is beautifully equipped both functionally and esthetically. It offers complete privacy in a quiet residential neighborhood in one of the nicest areas in Portland. All of the necessities are within a short walk, yet the central location makes getting around the greater Portland area very easy. The owners are thoughtful, attentive and responded promptly to our questions. The apartment is nicely maintained and the furnishings make for a very comfortable and welcoming place that feels like home. We are frequent VRBO renters and this is a special place and a great value!

Home from home.
The Alley House was our home from home for three months this fall. We could not have been more comfortable. The apartment is brilliantly designed and decorated with lovely original artwork. The kitchen was larger than you might expect for such a small space and very well equipped. Having a secure garage was a bonus that also gave us space to store our bicycles. Many evenings in the early fall were spent on the charming porch. The alley is very quiet at night with nothing to interrupt a good night's sleep. We look forward to returning.

Well-designed and fun space
This adorable apartment is stylish, clean, comfortable, and great fun. Everything you need is there, whether cooking a meal with fresh supplies from a farmer's market, reading by the fireplace, or on the porch watching the sunset. It's easy to get to any other neighborhood or hop on the freeway to go to the beach or the mountains. I rarely used my car, just my bike or the train. Get a bike map and learn Portland that way, especially the Esplanade on the waterfront and the Springwater Trail. The owners are interesting people who will take care of you well. The neighborhood has beautiful homes and landscaping and shopping and restaurants are nearby. Don't miss the guided tour of the Japanese Gardens.

For the last 17 years I have been in the short term rental business. We have a place in Switzerland we rent out and our Alley House here in Portland. We have managed the Alley House for the last 11 years. My husband is a theatre director and I am a musician. You may hear faint sounds if you stay in the Alley House.
The Alley House is very private and you won't see us very often. We are around if you have any questions or need something to make your stay more comfortable.

Why they chose this property

The garage and the privacy of the Alley House are unique. The property is in the inner NE, very close to downtown and about 20 minutes to the airport. Lots of restaurants, coffee shops and things to do within walking distance to the property.

What makes this property unique

The Alley house has a private garage accessed through the alley. A rare find in a close in neighborhood. You will never have parking problems.
