About Thomas Martin

I moved to the Phoenix metro area in 1972. I moved to the Tempe area to attend Arizona State University in 1981. I have always been in the construction field my entire life and I spend my spare time active in sports. I teach beginner to intermediate tennis to guests and I can give the most advanced players a good practice session.

Great house; close to ASU campus

The house itself is spacious with 4 bedrooms and 3 bathrooms. There is a great deal of space in the family room and the kitchen has what you need. It is quirky in the way it is laid out and some of the finished, but we really enjoyed our time there. The pool area is very nice too, although it is not heated, so it feels very cold. The hot tub is good too. My only issue was one of communication with the home owner. He is highly responsive, but did not recall that I asked to check in early and that he gave us permission to host a party, which led to an uncomfortable situation. My recommendation is that you exchange phone numbers and communicate by text, because the VRBO emails are not as easily accessed. Also, if you want the feeling of it being your place while you are renting it, you may want to make another choice. Tom is around taking care of the pool, and his office is in a locked off part of the house.

Owner's Response: I want to take this opportunity in my response to let all who are reading this review to know that this guest did not take the time to read her contract or her walk through paperwork. She would have known that the pool can be heated upon request if she would have read anything. In addition, and related to my first comment, I do not allow early arrivals for any reason other than to simply drop off bags because it interferes with our cleaning schedule. This guest may have asked for an early arrival, but I never agreed to an early arrival. Lastly, this guest is a very nice person and she did mention that I am highly responsive, but she has some trouble understanding house rules and the procedures that I am required to follow especially related to addition guests on my property as I will explain. I charge an event fee and require permission in any scenario where more than immediate family is planning to be on my property and not listed as guests. When I find out that 30 people are expected to be on my property without prior written notice one can expect me to make you feel uncomfortable because there is no way that I would have agreed to such an arrangement. I am insulted that I only got 4 stars from this guest because I bent over backwards to help them out. NOTE TO ALL: READ MY LISTING!!!!! I have been having guests for over 20 years at my property and only a handful have not given me the highest rating. Every single review that was not a 5 star rating has been a result of guests breaking my house rules or planning to break my house rules that I am required to enforce. So I do agree with this guest's suggestion to give me a call if there are any details that need to be clarified, but always communicate through the website to guarantee that I have agreed to your requests in writing, especially if the request deviates from my house rules, pricing, or policies. Simply requesting something is not enough, you need a clear written acceptance of your request through the website or there is a chance you will be giving me a bad review like this guest has done. P.S- I do have an office on the property, I was never there other than to take care of maintenance on the property. Why was this guest so worried about such things? It is a total separate space unrelated to the rental. I will let the reader of my response decide.

Perfect house and a beautiful location!

Our family of 8 thoroughly enjoyed our stay here! We came into town to celebrate our sons graduation from GCU and this was the perfect place to do it. The backyard with the patio, pool, hot tub, bbq and ping pong table was our favorite spot. But also the family room was great as well, with the pool table and plenty of comfy space on the big couches. The only thing I would suggest is to add a fan in the big family room to help circulate the air.. it's such a big room and the morning sun warms it up pretty quickly.

The rooms were perfect for us and their location in the house provided plenty of privacy for everyone. Tom is a very helpful and attentive host.. he made sure the pool and grounds were well kept throughout our stay.

We would definitely stay here again if ever in Tempe!

Great family getaway

Tom was there to greet us and show us the property. He was always available to handle any questions we might have. The place is close to the Phoenix Zoo, hiking trails, shopping and dining. We spent oodles of time in the heated pool and hot tub. Thanks Tom for a great vacation.

The property was as expected

We were a group of 4 couples and spent a week at the property. All the amenities were as they were advertised, great location, 4 large beds, 3 full baths, multiple media spaces, wifi worked well, property was clean and stocked with everything we needed during our stay. Only odd thing was the seller was staying at an attached apartment behind the house and without notice would appear in our space during the week, it certainly made a few in our group uncomfortable. He loves his home and is a little too hands on in my opinion. I have used VRBO 6-7 times and also own my own vacation rental property and would never expect to see an owner multiple times during the week unannounced, it's an invasion of a renters privacy.

Owner's Response: Wow! Too hands on? Invasion of privacy? Sorry you felt that way. I seem to have lost a star in my review for taking care of my property. I am at a loss regarding Dan's statement that I invaded his rental space! I don't enter the rented portion of the property unless absolutely necessary or to satisfy a request by a guest. My chores are limited to the outside of the property only. I have no reason to invade the rented space without reason or notice. Dan says he owns a vacation rental and he should know it is very UNCOOL to make such a statement. I was on the property to work and take care of the pool, hot tub, plants, trash, and maintenance. I do this work personally so that I don't have random work crews showing up to disrupt my guests. It states in the "walk through" that I would be on the property in the mornings to do my chores and that if there are times that are inconvenient to let me know. I got no word from Dan that I was being inconvenient to his stay in any way. You would think this would be an important topic to communicate to your host! Communication is very important to me and I listen and communicate very well with no complications if others are listening as well. This is Arizona, so even skipping a day could mean death to my flowers and grass dependent on the weather. If that is too "hands on" then anyone reading this response to Dan's review should avoid renting my property because it requires some work to keep it nice especially in regards to the heated pool and hot tub with large groups. I can guarantee if I did not do my chores, the property would look bad very quickly, and I would have gotten a complaint about the condition of all the items mentioned previously. Therefore, this review given by Dan is a "no win" situation for me. This house is no different than any resort or hotel, it requires lots of maintenance especially due to its amenities, location, and unusual amount of foliage in the neighborhood. I have been a host for more than 20 years with 8 of them on this website and have never had a complaint regarding this topic. I will continue to do what is necessary to keep this property in good condition for all my guests. Lastly, Dan makes an impossible assumption that I was staying in the attached apartment in the back. It is private and completely separate from the rental in every way. Paranoid guests maybe? Something to hide? I will let the reader decide. SIMPLE COMMUNICATION COULD HAVE RESOLVED ALL CONCERNS, JUST ASK!

Awesome property, location and host!

The house was great! Very roomy, accommodated our group of 3 couples and 2 children very well. Location is in a quite neighborhood, but still close to everything.
