4 BR, Vacation Home Close to Lake Huron. Great Hunting & Fishing
Why Sharleen Schumacher chose Harbor Beach
This home has had a colorful past. It was once home to the 2nd wife of auto magnate Horace Dodge. She stayed on after the divorce and became personal sec'y to the last Mrs. Dodge, Matilda Dodge Wilson of Meadowbrook Hall & Oakland University. This house also served as a hideout for Detroit's infamous Purple Gang. Another resident for a short time was author John Steinbeck.

Cozy and Cute
We had a great time at this adorable house! It felt like up north, which was exactly what we wanted. Everything was clean and exactly as stated on the info section with the exception of the VCR not working. Sharleen ended up giving us a partial refund due to this issue, which was totally unnecessary but greatly appreciated. The only thing that would have made our trip better would have been another bathroom, but we made it work!
Very well maintained.... cozy
Great Host, Property is nicely manicured and located in a convenient quiet setting.
Rustic feel with amenities.
spacious and cozy with large yard
Was in town for my daughters wedding and need a close place to stay. House had everything we needed, four bedrooms, bathroom, kitchen. Not fancy or new, but clean and had everything we needed. Owner was very easy to work with. No big security deposit or cleaning fee was appreciated.
Black Mold! Worn-out Mattresses! No Heat! No Refunds! Do NOT book this home!
This was hands-down the worst vacation rental experience that I have ever had. My husband, two children (ages 4 and 1) and I booked this home for the weekend of August 11-13th, 2017. Immediately upon entering the home, we were struck by the smell (very, very musty, like an old basement). We figured the home just hadn't been rented in a while and needed to air out, so we opened up every possible window and headed in to town for dinner.
The smell still hadn't improved when we returned back to the home later that evening, but it was getting chilly outside, so we closed up the windows and attempted to turn on the heat. The thermostat did not work. No instructions were left as to how to operate the heating system in the home. My husband went down to the basement to make sure that the furnace was turned on. He was absolutely appalled by the amount of moisture in the basement of this home! He immediately realized why all of the floors on the first level of this home are so terribly warped, and why the home smells so awful. Unfortunately, he was not able to figure out how to turn on the heat.
We got our children tucked in to bed, then attempted to sleep ourselves, but every bed that we tried out in the home was worse than the one before. You can actually feel the springs of these mattresses digging in to your body. And the linens themselves are old, ratty, and completely worn-out. My husband, who has severe allergies, struggled to breathe, and to sleep, in this home.
The next morning, we got cleaned up, and in the daylight, I then noticed something in this home that made my stomach churn: BLACK MOLD. The white interior doors are covered in it! I can only imagine how much mold is living under the carpeting in that home, as you can actually feel the moisture in that carpeting when you walk on it (from the moisture issues in the basement). I immediately contacted the homeowner to explain the situation, and to let her know that my family and I would be checking out a day earlier due to the mold issue. I left it up to her to determine how she wanted to handle things financially.
The answer I received from the homeowner was: "I do not feel that any type of financial adjustment of your rental fee is warranted. Your family did stay overnight and utilized 3 of the 5 beds available as well as used the shower facilities."
I have filed a formal property complaint against this home. Do not book this home!!!
This is the 1st bad review we've had during our 10 years of renting this property on 2 websites. If I could post all the positive comments guests have written in my "Guest Book," they would far outweigh the comments made.
The furnace does work, and we have rented to the same deer hunters each Nov. for the last 10 yrs. to prove it (and they certainly do need heat). We do have a dehumidifier in the basement but opt to turn it off during times when we have guests staying so as not to disturb them.
My mother resided in this home until her passing at age 96 (and not from black mold problems either). The home is almost 200 yrs. old and sits on 2 shaded acres of property very close to Lake Huron -- thus the humidity. I feel that their dissatisfaction with the home & property was caused by their lack of due diligence in not realizing the humidity/dampness involved in renting a property so close to the lake coupled with an allergy problem. I, too, live on Lake Huron and experience extreme moisture but nothing that a dehumidifier doesn't remedy. It's a lovely, old home with a history, so please disregard this 1 bad review and come on up to the beautiful Thumb Area of Michigan and see for yourselves!!!
Ms. VonFintel at no time contacted me by phone to indicate any problems upon her arrival. I live almost across the street from the rental property and could've immediately responded to her problems. My name & phone number were clearly posted on the refrigerator. I didn't even know they had departed (leaving all windows wide open on a rainy day), and notified me by "e-mail" which I didn't open until later that afternoon.
This couple has filed a similar complaint about another rental property, so there appears to be a pattern here.
Quaint Location, Friendly Community
The house has a wonderful outdoor area including two porches, a spacious yard and an enormous fire pit. We found the wonderful restored one room school house up the street, met the neighbors and were able to get the tour. The kids ran the school bell and had a blast.
Other Activities: Great Lakes Sunken Ship Museum in Lexington/Pt. Sanilac Area for underwater divers. Two State game areas nearby for hunting. Kayaking water trail. Great fishing.
