About Lisa Downer

My husband and i discovered Hanalei Bay on a 3 day visit in 1984, we walked from the newly opened Princeville Hotel, crossed Hanalei River, then walked and swam our way across the Bay. We were captivated by the staggering beauty and simplicity of the Bay and Hanalei town. When we returned to the hotel, John Ferry was talking real-estate w/other guests by the pool. My brilliant husband politely made John's acquaintance. We put an offer on the property and about 9 months later received a call from John telling us we were the owners of a home in Hanalei! As a young couple, we camped Kalalau a couple of times, but it was as we had our children, that we really experienced the magic of Hanalei Bay, seeing all the wonders thru their eyes. Part of the serenity of Hanalei is the pace. If you are accustomed to living life in 4th or 5th gear, you will have to downshift to 1st or 2nd gear for Nani Nani Hale, enjoy the creativity and the drive.

Lisa Downer purchased this house in 1986

Why Lisa Downer chose Hanalei

I would say that we did not choose Hanalei, Hanalei chose us. It is such a gift and privilege to experience Hanalei Bay.

Nani Nani Hale is a relaxing plantation style home that has been enjoyed by vacationers for decades, one of my friends rented it regularly in the "70's," she calls it "The Happy House." There are honor bicycles in the shed, i behind the house, please repair if you have an issue. Same with the foamie surfboards that hang in the dining room.

What makes this house unique

This August, i looked out and saw what looked to be a line of swimmers, on closer glance, it was a pod of Spinner Dolphins. Three of us paddled out on long boards and cherished the site of spinners and their many babies playing in the bay. The best is being on the beach, walking out and checking the waves whenever you want. When you see the clouds form over the mountains, you know, you just have a quick walk to the lanai for shelter from the showers, and you can return to the beach once the clouds pass. The yard is beautiful and private, lots of frolicking, handstands, and tumbling. Do explore, you may find the star fruit tree full of fruit, and in the fall and winter, the mandarin tree may have some treats for you. In the front yard is a verigated Noni tree, the fruit smells awful, but has medicinal purposes. The Longhan tree has yet to produce, but perhaps you will be lucky and witness the first harvest. Every summer we do the first leg of the Kalalau Trail to Hanakapai Beach. This year was the driest and the trail has been very nicely groomed. We love to sit in the river and cool off before hiking back out.

Guestbook comments from the manager

Dear Linda and Jeff A Huge thank-you to you both for letting us share in the charm and comfort of your delightful beach house. We viewed Hawaii from a new perspective and came home with new and unique memories. Our entire family loved being there. Again, thank you.

Our busy family took the time to reconnect. We remembered how much fun we have together!

  • 5 of 5

Everyone had the best time! We cooked together, laughed, played games, had long leisurely breakfasts and relaxed. The runners in the group ran in paradise, some of the gang surfed. We all enjoyed the primo location. Thank you for providing the beach stuff! Everyone arrived with laptops, earbuds... totally wired for work. When it was time to head home, everyone had achieved the ‘Aloha’ state of mind!

This house was unanimously the best part of our trip to Kauai. Staying right on Hanalei Bay was delightful, and the house has an authentically Hawaiian feel to it.

The good: Strolls to the beach with a cup of coffee in the morning, dinners on the most excellent patio while watching the sun set over the water, strolls on the beach at night. No hassle to play on the beach all day. The patio has two picture-postcard views: ocean to one side, mountains to the other. House and cottage were spacious and clean, with very soft towels. The large beds were very comfortable (twin beds were like rocks though). Sweet gecko chirps everywhere. The outdoor shower was fabulous...we used it a lot!!! Property management was super responsive and friendly.

The bad (but not dealbreakers): No A/C so it was hot inside the house during the day; it cooled off at night though. Loads of mosquitoes hampered most nighttime activities on the patio. Kitchen needs new sauté pans and knives, so bring your own if you like to cook. Noise and traffic on the adjacent beach access parking was annoying (but not as bad as I'd thought: the occasional extended late-night conversations between beachgoers standing right outside the windows was the worst of it).

We would definitely stay here again, but only after the area recovers a bit more from the floods last spring. Kuhio Highway is still closed to all but local and emergency traffic...sadly, there was no driving the lovely road to Ke'e beach. The flooding also resulted in a dearth of fresh local fish...our favorite fish market (the Dolphin in Hanalei) is closed indefinitely, and the one in Kilauea has only a tiny selection.

No better location!

  • 5 of 5

If you're looking for the best location in Hanalei Bay, this is it! The perfect spot for our 30th wedding anniversary with our entire family. The kids took the main house while my wife and I settled into the guest house, which was very cozy. We loved our stay and can't wait to return. My lone suggestion to the owners would be to replace the old bikes.

Great Home - Great Kitchen

  • 5 of 5

This was a perfect spot for anybody utilizing the harbor, needing to be near Lihue, or wanting easy access to both the Southeast part of the island and the Coconut Coast.

It gets hot - but cool enough wth fans and windows open on even the hot days.

The rental company was great about any issues that came up: quick and responsive.

We had a relaxing time and were able to park, cook, sleep and enjoy the area in secure comfort.

Perfect design for comfort

  • 5 of 5

House was really beautiful and located right on beach. Loved the porch! Spent all my time at house on porch. Easy walk to town. Felt very secluded with exception of a few beach issues. Two drugged/drunk people in middle of night screaming their heads off. Called police on one to return her to nearby condo-she was in bad shape. The other incident drunk guy left with friend. I guess that's part of the ideal location. Loved the north shore. Loved outdoor shower. The landscaping was amazing on house. We had a family reunion here with all ages. Half of group stayed over in Princeville, so it was convenient. Would stay again. Thanks for water play equipment. We left an extra boogie board and sand toys for others to use. We miss this home already. Thank you for sharing!
